Kingston in June: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Things to Do

The sun comes up over Kingston at about 5:30 a.m. in mid-June, and by early afternoon the average high reaches 86.4°F. Off the south coast the sea sits at 85.2°F, close enough to the air that wading in brings no chill. For a city trip, June is a month of early starts: Port Royal’s forts from the 1650s after breakfast, a 1911 cathedral when the heat peaks, and the national heroes’ monuments downtown.

June sits between a wetter May and a hotter July. It gets 3.17 inches of rain against May’s 4.11, and its afternoon high runs 1.4°F below July’s 87.8°F. It also opens the Atlantic hurricane season, so book rooms you can cancel and read our hurricane-season guide before you commit. Routes from US airports are in our flights guide, and the case for the city itself is in our Kingston guide.

Every figure here comes from a weather model, and it describes one place. The normals below are for an ECMWF ERA5 grid cell at 17.997° N over Kingston itself, on the sheltered south coast that is the island’s driest side. They do not stand in for the north shore, where the resorts sit: Ocho Rios and Montego Bay have their own guides, and our best-time guide covers the island month by month.

Kingston’s June normals for 1991–2020 give an average high of 86.4°F, an average low of 76.1°F and 3.17 inches of rain. They are Open-Meteo figures built on ECMWF ERA5, a reanalysis: a weather model’s reconstruction of a grid cell, rather than readings from a thermometer at the airport station. Reanalysis and station normals can disagree, most often on the overnight low, so read the 76.1°F as a guide to the night.

On 7.3 days in an average June the cell records at least 0.10 inch of rain, roughly one day in four. Only 0.5 day tops an inch, so a true downpour turns up about one June in two, and most wet days stay well short of that. Keep one indoor stop in each day’s plan, such as the Institute of Jamaica or Holy Trinity Cathedral, and a shower costs you an hour instead of an outing.

From the 86.4°F afternoon to the 76.1°F night, the average swing is 10.3°F. Nothing in that range calls for a layer: pack linen or cotton, a spare shirt for the afternoon change, a compact umbrella for those 7.3 wet days, and high-factor sunscreen for mornings on open fort walls. Our Jamaica packing list has the full kit.

On June 15 Kingston gets about 13 hours 15 minutes of daylight. Sunrise falls at 5:30 a.m. and sunset at 6:45 p.m. local time, since Jamaica stays on UTC-5 all year with no daylight saving. The light fades soon after 7 p.m., so a harbor sunset fits before dinner, and a return drive from Port Royal is best started before 6:45 p.m.

Can you swim in Kingston in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Off Kingston the sea surface averages 85.2°F in June, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024. That figure is the mean of each day’s maximum, reached in the warmest part of the day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade lower. Expect morning water a little under 85.2°F and afternoon water right around it.

In practice there is no cold shock at all. The water runs 1.2°F below the 86.4°F afternoon air, so a swim cools you only slightly, and children or cold-sensitive swimmers can stay in for long stretches. Beaches east and west of the city are in our south coast guide. The harbor itself is a working port, and we did not verify any swimming spot inside it.

We found no wind or swell series for June off Kingston, so we give no figure for either. June is also the first month of the Atlantic hurricane season, and a passing tropical system can churn the water within days. Check the marine forecast the morning you plan to swim, and read our after-Hurricane Melissa update for recovery news on the coast.

How busy is Kingston in June? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for Kingston, so we rank no month as the cheap one and give no crowd score. For how prices move across the Jamaican year, our best-time guide tracks the seasons island-wide, and our trip-cost guide breaks down a daily budget.

We could not verify a typical booking lead time for June, so we give no week count. The one booking rule June does impose comes from the weather calendar: with the hurricane season open from June 1, choose room rates you can cancel and a flight you can change, and look at the tropics about a week before departure. Getting from Norman Manley International into town is covered in our airport-transfers guide.

We could not verify the lodging tax or accommodation levy charged on a Kingston room, so we give no rate and no amount. Ask the hotel whether its quoted nightly price includes taxes and fees, and check the final total on the booking screen before you pay.

Nights average 76.1°F in June, so a fan-only room stays warm around the clock. If one upgrade goes into the budget, make it reliable air conditioning, plus a pool if you can get one, for the stretch after lunch when the day tops out near 86.4°F.

Things to do in Kingston in June

In June you get more than 13 hours of daylight, and the day opens close to the 76.1°F average low at 5:30 a.m. Those first hours suit Kingston’s open-air heritage. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust, the statutory body that declares National Monuments, lists about forty heritage sites in Kingston alone, from the Port Royal forts to the twentieth-century monuments of National Heroes Park.

Fort Charles was the first fort built at Port Royal, in the late 1650s, and Fort Carlisle, Fort Morgan and Fort Rocky followed. Before the earthquake of 1692 destroyed much of it, including the original St. Peter’s Church, Port Royal was called “the richest and wickedest city in the world.” The Trust records its archaeology both on land and underwater. On Kingston’s eastern edge, Rockfort was fortified in 1694 against a feared French invasion from Santo Domingo. Downtown, National Heroes Park holds monuments to Marcus Garvey (1964), Norman Manley (dedicated September 16, 1972) and Nanny of the Maroons (dedicated October 14, 1999), alongside George William Gordon, Paul Bogle and Samuel Sharpe.

The forts and the park lie in the open, and by early afternoon they take the full 86.4°F, so see them before 10 a.m. Give the midday hours to interiors: Holy Trinity Cathedral, built in 1911 in the Byzantine-revival style four years after the 1907 earthquake, Kingston Parish Church, erected around 1911 on the foundations of the original church, and the Institute of Jamaica, established in 1879 under Governor Sir Anthony Musgrave. The Trust publishes no opening hours or admission fees, and we could not find either on a stable official page, so call ahead before crossing town.

We could not verify an admission charge for any Kingston site, so we promise no free entry anywhere. Looking at the facades costs nothing, though: Wesley Methodist Church (1825), the Jamaica Georgian house at 150 East Street, one of the few of its design left in the city, the grand Georgian-style Kingston Railway Station, and the Ward Theater, a 1912 gift from Colonel Charles Ward on St. William Grant Park in the center of downtown. Trench Town Culture Yard, one of the Central Housing Authority houses built between 1940 and 1949, is also a declared site. Read our safety guide before planning that visit.

Kingston in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts on Port Royal’s waterfront by 6:30 a.m., an hour after sunrise, with Fort Charles as soon as it opens (we could not verify its hours). Be back in the city by 11 a.m. and keep noon to 3 p.m. indoors at Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Institute of Jamaica. Around 4:30 p.m., walk past the Ward Theatre and St. William Grant Park, then find a spot on the harbor for the 6:45 p.m. sunset. Roads, taxis and drive times are in our getting-around guide.

Give day two to the national story: National Heroes Park at 7 a.m., including Alexander Bustamante’s monument (completed October 1979), then Liberty Hall, the Kingston center of Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association, and Rockfort’s 1694 walls before the heat builds. If one of June’s 7.3 wet days turns up, move the park to the next dry morning and spend the shower inside Kingston Parish Church or Wesley Methodist Church. With the afternoon free, swim in the 85.2°F sea along the south coast or drive up into the Blue Mountains.

Kingston in June vs May and July

Normal May June July
Average high (1991–2020) 85.3°F 86.4°F 87.8°F
Average low (1991–2020) 74.5°F 76.1°F 76.3°F
Precipitation (1991–2020) 4.11 in 3.17 in 2.82 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 8.9 7.3 6.4
Sea surface, daily maxima (2015–2024) 84.6°F 85.2°F 85.3°F

From May to July the average high climbs from 85.3°F to 86.4°F to 87.8°F, a 2.5°F rise over the three months, while rain drops from 4.11 to 3.17 to 2.82 inches and wet days from 8.9 to 7.3 to 6.4. Nights move less: June’s 76.1°F low sits only 0.2°F under July’s. The sea, from the Marine API’s 2015–2024 daily maxima, barely shifts at 84.6°F in May, 85.2°F in June and 85.3°F in July.

Moving four weeks earlier, to May, buys highs 1.1°F lower and nights 1.6°F cooler, at the cost of 0.94 inch more rain and 1.6 more wet days. Moving to July trims rain by 0.35 inch and wet days by 0.9, and adds 1.4°F to the afternoon high. May falls before the June 1 start of the hurricane season, and July lands one month further into it.

Is June a good time to visit Kingston?

Go in June for a two- or three-night Kingston city trip if you are happy starting at 6:30 a.m. and shifting an outing when a shower comes through. Skip it if afternoons around 86.4°F wear you down, or if your dates cannot move, as with a wedding, because June is the first month of the hurricane season.

If the answer is no, pick May: highs of 85.3°F, nights at 74.5°F and a date before the hurricane season opens, in exchange for 4.11 inches of rain over 8.9 wet days. For the rest of the Jamaican year, our best-time guide runs through each month.

June gives Kingston more than 13 hours of daylight with the rain already easing from May, so a 5:30 a.m. sunrise at Port Royal still leaves a full indoor afternoon and an evening by the water at 6:45 p.m.

The last word

Set a 5:30 a.m. alarm and June in Kingston works: the forts and Heroes Park get the mild hours, and the heat of the afternoon goes to cathedral and museum interiors. Leave room on the list for Edna Manley’s Negro Aroused, a 1935 sculpture the Trust has declared a national monument, and for the 1968 monument to Donald Sangster in National Heroes Park. Book refundable, and check the forecast the night before choosing which morning goes to Port Royal.
