Kingston in July: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and Things to Do

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust lists about forty heritage sites for Kingston alone, from the forts of Port Royal to the dated monuments of National Heroes Park. On July 15 the sun stays up for about 13 hours and 8 minutes, long enough for a fort at dawn and a monument walk before dinner, with a hot middle of the day to plan around.

Afternoon highs average 87.8°F in July, so a good trip here is built on early starts and a long indoor lunch. Count on three nights for the two-day plan further down. Where to sleep lives in our Jamaica where-to-stay guide, and the route in from US cities in flights from the US.

Every air figure here comes from ECMWF’s ERA5 reanalysis, served by Open-Meteo and averaged over 1991-2020 for one model grid cell centered at 17.997°N, 76.79°W, over Kingston itself on the sheltered south coast. It is a model estimate for a grid square, and no airport thermometer was read. The south coast is the island’s driest side, and these numbers do not describe the north shore, where Montego Bay and Ocho Rios sit.

In an average July, the ERA5 cell over Kingston runs a high of 87.8°F and a low of 76.3°F, with 2.82 inches of precipitation across the month. Open-Meteo computes these 1991-2020 normals from a model reanalysis, and a reanalysis smooths a whole grid square instead of logging one street corner. Read them as the character of the month, and expect a sunny downtown block at 2 p.m. to feel at least as hot.

Measurable rain, 0.10 inch or more, falls on 6.4 days in an average July: roughly one day in five. A day with an inch or more happens 0.2 times per July, so a true soaker lands about one July in five. Spread 2.82 inches over those 6.4 days and the typical wet day brings under half an inch, a shower you plan around with a folding umbrella and a roofed stop nearby.

Between the average high and low sits a gap of 11.5°F, and a 76.3°F low keeps evenings in short-sleeve territory. Pack breathable cotton or linen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle for the forts. A light layer only earns its place if your hotel runs its air conditioning cold. For the rest of the bag, see our Jamaica packing list.

On July 15 Kingston gets about 13 hours and 8 minutes of daylight. Sunrise-sunset.org puts sunrise at 10:39 UTC and sunset at 23:47 UTC, which on Jamaica’s UTC−5 clock means 5:39 a.m. and 6:47 p.m. Schedule outdoor sightseeing for the first hours after dawn and from about 4 p.m., and plan dinner after dark.

Can you swim in Kingston in July? Sea temperature

Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Kingston at 85.3°F in July, averaged over 2015-2024. That number is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average. Tables built on daily means can show a slightly lower figure for the same water, and the method explains most of that gap.

For a swimmer, 85.3°F means no gasp on entry and no need for a wetsuit or rash guard for warmth. Water this warm cools you little, so short dips with shade in between suit a July afternoon better than a long swim at noon. Kingston’s own waterfront is a working harbor, and for a beach day our south coast guide lists the options.

We could not verify wind or swell data for July off Kingston, so we give no chop or surf forecast. July falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and a tropical system is the event that would change the sea’s state. Check the marine forecast before any time on the water, and see our Jamaica hurricane season guide for the risk by month.

How busy is Kingston in July? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel occupancy series and no monthly room rates for Kingston, so we rank July neither cheap nor expensive. The calendar fact we can give: July sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and best time to visit Jamaica sets it against the other eleven months.

Without a booking curve we give no number of weeks ahead. Book a refundable room rate or a flexible fare, and pick travel insurance that covers named storms. US departure cities and routes are in flights from the US, and the ride into town from the airport in Jamaica airport transfers.

We could not verify a lodging tax or guest accommodation fee for Kingston, so we give no amount. Ask your hotel whether its quoted rate includes taxes and fees before you pay, and build the rest of your budget with our Jamaica trip cost guide.

Air conditioning is where we would spend extra. With an average July low of 76.3°F, the night brings little relief, and a room with working AC decides how well you sleep before a 5:39 a.m. sunrise start. If the cheaper room lists only a fan, take the upgrade.

Things to do in Kingston in July

Of Kingston’s three summer months, July posts the fewest wet days in the ERA5 cell, 6.4 against 7.3 in June and 9.2 in August, with more than 13 hours of daylight on top. For an itinerary built on open forts and outdoor monuments, those are the best odds of a dry day in the June-to-August stretch.

At Port Royal, Fort Charles was the first fort built, in the late 1650s, and Fort Carlisle, Fort Morgan and Fort Rocky followed. The town, once called “the richest and wickedest city in the world,” lost the original St. Peter’s Church in the 1692 earthquake. Downtown, the Ward Theatre, gifted to the city by Colonel Charles Ward in 1912, stands on St. William Grant Park. Holy Trinity Cathedral (1911, Byzantine revival), the Institute of Jamaica (founded 1879), Marcus Garvey’s Liberty Hall and Trench Town Culture Yard, a Central Housing Authority house from 1940-1949, round out the list. We could not find opening hours or admission fees for any of them.

None of these sites changes with the season, and an 87.8°F average high does. Port Royal’s forts and the open lawns of National Heroes Park belong to the morning, and roofed stops like the Institute of Jamaica to the early afternoon. In the park, the monuments run from Marcus Garvey (1964) and Donald Sangster (1968) to Norman Manley (1972), Alexander Bustamante (1979) and Nanny of the Maroons (1999).

We could not confirm which sites charge admission, so we list none as free. From the sidewalk you can see the Jamaica Georgian house at 150 East Street, one of the few of its design left in the city, and Kingston Railway Station, built on a grand scale along the same lines. Wesley Methodist Church dates from 1825, older than both, and Kingston Parish Church went up around 1911 on the foundations of the original church.

Kingston in July: a two-day itinerary

Day one: leave for Port Royal around 6:30 a.m., under an hour after the 5:39 sunrise, and walk Fort Charles before 10. Back in town by late morning, eat lunch indoors and give the hottest stretch, roughly noon to 3 p.m., to the Institute of Jamaica. From about 4 p.m., walk the monuments of National Heroes Park and finish by the 6:47 p.m. sunset. Confirm hours locally before each stop. Taxi and driver options are in our Jamaica getting-around guide.

Day two stays downtown. Start at St. William Grant Park and the Ward Theatre around 7 a.m., then Kingston Parish Church, Liberty Hall and the Georgian house at 150 East Street before late morning. After lunch, visit Trench Town Culture Yard with a local guide, and read our Jamaica safety guide before you go. If a shower moves in, swap the outdoor stops for Holy Trinity Cathedral and push the street walk to the next dry morning.

Kingston in July vs June and August

Kingston June July August
Average high 86.4°F 87.8°F 87.8°F
Average low 76.1°F 76.3°F 76.5°F
Precipitation 3.17 in 2.82 in 3.66 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 7.3 6.4 9.2
Sea surface (daily maxima, 2015-2024) 85.2°F 85.3°F 86.6°F

June averages a high of 86.4°F, and July and August both reach 87.8°F, so the step up comes between June and July. Lows barely move: 76.1°F, 76.3°F and 76.5°F. Rain dips in the middle, from 3.17 inches over 7.3 wet days in June to 2.82 inches over 6.4 in July, then rises to 3.66 inches over 9.2 in August. At sea, Open-Meteo’s Marine API reads 85.2°F, 85.3°F and 86.6°F as daily-maxima averages.

Moving to June trims 1.4°F off the average high and costs 0.35 inch more rain and about one extra wet day. Moving to August keeps the same 87.8°F high, adds 0.84 inch of rain and 2.8 more wet days, and warms the sea by 1.3°F. Our Kingston in June and Kingston in August guides run the full numbers.

Is July a good time to visit Kingston?

Yes, if you come for Port Royal and the downtown monuments and can start at dawn: July has the fewest wet days of Kingston’s three summer months. No, if heat is the deal-breaker, since the 87.8°F average high matches August and nights hold near 76°F. And if resort beaches are the goal, look to the north shore, in Montego Bay or Ocho Rios.

If heat is your objection, June brings the average high down to 86.4°F for a little more rain. For months outside the summer, we set the island’s full calendar side by side in best time to visit Jamaica.

July pairs the fewest rain days of Kingston’s summer, 6.4, with daylight lasting until 6:47 p.m.

The last word

Book the room with air conditioning, set the alarm for the 5:39 sunrise, and July in Kingston holds up. Add one morning stop east of downtown: Rockfort, at the city’s eastern edge, fortified in 1694 against a feared French invasion from Santo Domingo.
