DUNN’S RIVER FALLS · MAY · 18.4° N
May drops 5.75 inches of rain over the falls and neighboring Ocho Rios, more than April (2.69) and June (2.97) put together. The heat barely budges: highs average 86.2°F, lows 75.2°F. What changes is the sky, and how often you plan a climb around it.
The trade is readable. Thirteen wet days, a sea already at 84.0°F, and just over thirteen hours of daylight on a trip that lands between the winter crowds and the summer school holidays. The rest of the vacation, the route, the base and the budget, belongs to our 10-day route and the trip-cost guide.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · MAY
Come in May for a sea already at 84.0°F and air still under 87°F, and plan around rainfall that roughly doubles April’s and June’s.
SEA 84.0°F · 13.4 WET DAYS · SUNSET 6:36 P.M. ON MAY 15
Go for: water at 84.0°F with air two degrees cooler than June’s, long swimming afternoons, and a month that sits ahead of the Atlantic storm calendar.
Think twice before: booking a single fixed day for the climb. Measurable rain falls on 13.4 days of an average May, roughly three days in seven.

Dunn’s River Falls weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days

| Average low | 75.2°F |
| Total precipitation | 5.75 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 13.4 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.5 |

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis for 1991-2020, not from an airport thermometer. These are modeled values for the grid cell at 18.41°N, 77.10°W, which sits over Ocho Rios about two miles east of the falls. Close enough that the same weather reaches both, and we would rather name the cell than let the numbers stand in for the whole north coast. Within that limit, May averages a high of 86.2°F, a low of 75.2°F and 5.75 inches of rain.
13.4 days in an average May record at least 0.10 inch of rain, which leaves roughly seventeen days with nothing measurable at all. Divide the month’s total by its wet days and the typical rainy day carries about 0.43 inch, an amount that arrives and leaves. Only 0.5 day reaches a full inch, so a genuine soaking shows up in about one May out of two.
Eleven degrees separate the average high from the average low, and the low itself is 75.2°F, which is warmer than most American summer nights. Nothing in a sea-level suitcase needs to be warm. The Blue Mountains run cooler than the coast, and we hold no May normals for them, so treat that as a separate packing question in the packing guide. At the falls, quick-dry clothing and a second pair of shoes do more work than any layer.
Daylight runs 13 hours 3 minutes on May 15, with the sun setting at 6:36 p.m. local. A climb taken in the morning still leaves an entire afternoon, and dinner in Ocho Rios happens after dark rather than in the last of the light. Anything planned for the water wants to be finished by six.
Can you swim in Dunn’s River Falls in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off the falls averages 84.0°F in May in Open-Meteo’s marine series, taken as the mean of daily maxima across 2015-2024. That is the warmest reading of each day rather than a round-the-clock average, so shade it down slightly in your head before planning around it. The series is a decade of satellite-era model output, not a buoy someone reads at noon.
Water at 84.0°F against air at 86.2°F leaves barely two degrees between them, which in practice means no gasp on entry and no natural end to a swim other than lunch. Children stay in until someone insists otherwise, and a snorkel session needs no wetsuit. One limit: the figure describes the sea at the foot of the falls, not the fresh water coming down the rock. We could not verify a river temperature, so we give none.
Our marine source carries temperature only. We could not verify May wave heights or wind speeds for this piece of coast, so no figure for either appears, and a page that invented one would be guessing. For the storm calendar that opens after May, the hurricane-season guide holds the dates, and the Melissa recovery page covers what changed on the ground.
How busy is Dunn’s River Falls in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no monthly occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Ocho Rios, so we crown no month cheapest and no month busiest. What the calendar does say is plain enough: May falls after the winter season and before the American summer school holidays, and it sits ahead of the Atlantic storm months. Our best-time page handles the twelve-month view.
Booking lead times were beyond us too. No operator lead time for the climb could be verified, so this page gives no number of weeks. The workable sequence is to lock the two items that carry an actual timestamp first, your flight from the US and your transfer from Montego Bay or Kingston, then let the hotel and the falls follow.
On tax, our cards are on the table: we could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate, so no percentage appears anywhere here. What a room, a rental car and a week of meals tend to run is broken out in the trip-cost guide, which also flags the lines we have not been able to pin down.
If money moves anything in May, it moves the rain days. With 13.4 of them in an average month, a room with covered outdoor space and a private transfer instead of a shared shuttle turn a 0.43-inch afternoon into an inconvenience rather than a lost day. A refundable rate does the same job on a short trip.
Things to do in Dunn’s River Falls in May: the climb, the beach and Ocho Rios

In May the sea reads 84.0°F while the air averages 86.2°F, which is close to June’s swimming without June’s 88.2°F afternoons. April’s air is nearly the same (85.3°F), but its water sits at 82.5°F, a degree and a half colder in a place where you spend hours in it. That combination, warm water and slightly restrained heat, belongs to May alone among the three.
The climb itself is the anchor, and the beach at its foot is where the 84.0°F figure applies. Ocho Rios, two miles east and the town our weather cell actually covers, supplies the rest of the day. Further afield, the Luminous Lagoon runs after dark. One caution: we could not verify the falls’ current admission price or opening hours, so none appear here, and our things-to-do guide carries the wider list.
What May changes at these places is the air, not the water. Sea surface moves only 2.4°F across April, May and June (82.5 to 84.9), while rainfall more than doubles between April and May. A place built around water therefore feels almost identical month to month, and the season is decided by what falls on you while you walk between the parking lot and the first pool.
No free-admission day at the falls in May could be verified, so we list none. Free in the literal sense is the light: 13 hours 3 minutes of it on the 15th, which covers a morning climb, an afternoon swim and a walk through town before 6:36 p.m. without spending a further dollar.
Dunn’s River Falls in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one goes vertical early. Take the climb in the first hours of the morning, while the air is still short of its 86.2°F afternoon and the rock is being walked rather than queued. Swim afterward at the beach below, where the sea is at 84.0°F and needs no acclimatizing. Lunch indoors through the hottest part of the day, then move into Ocho Rios for the late afternoon, with usable light holding until 6:36 p.m.
Day two takes a direction: inland toward the mountains, or east along the coast toward Port Antonio, with getting around covering the driving. If the sky turns, remember that an inch of rain falls on only 0.5 day in an average May: a full washout is unlikely, a shower is the usual form. Flip the order, put the indoor hours first, and take the climb in the afternoon.
Dunn’s River Falls in May vs April and June
| Measure | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 85.3°F | 86.2°F | 88.2°F |
| Average low | 73.3°F | 75.2°F | 77.2°F |
| Precipitation | 2.69 in | 5.75 in | 2.97 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 7.3 | 13.4 | 7.8 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 82.5°F | 84.0°F | 84.9°F |
Across the three months the air climbs steadily, 85.3°F to 86.2°F to 88.2°F, and the sea follows the same slow line from 82.5°F to 84.9°F. Rain refuses to behave: May’s 5.75 inches sit against 2.69 in April and 2.97 in June, and wet days nearly double, 13.4 against 7.3 and 7.8. May is the outlier of the trio on one variable only, and it is the one you notice.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain six fewer wet days and lose 1.5°F of sea temperature, plus two degrees of night warmth (73.3°F against 75.2°F). Shift four weeks later and the water improves by 0.9°F while the afternoons gain two full degrees of heat. Our April page makes the drier case in detail.
Is May a good time to visit Dunn’s River Falls?
Yes for swimmers and for anyone with two or three days to spend rather than one. Water at 84.0°F and air at 86.2°F make for the easiest sort of Caribbean day, and seventeen of the month’s days record no measurable rain at all. No for a traveler with a single fixed afternoon at the falls and no room to move it: three days in seven see rain, and that is a poor bet on one attempt.
If the answer is no, April is the month to prefer. It halves the wet days (7.3 against 13.4) and cuts rainfall to 2.69 inches, at a cost of 1.5°F in the sea and a couple of degrees at night. June trades the other way, with the warmest water of the three at 84.9°F and afternoons averaging 88.2°F.
May is the only one of the three that pairs a sea at 84.0°F with afternoons still under 87°F.
The last word
Give May two shots at the climb rather than one and the month’s single weakness stops mattering. The sun is up at 5:33 a.m. on May 15, nearly three hours before most visitors reach the rock, which is the cheapest advantage on offer in a month where we could verify no prices at all. Set the alarm, book the transfer the night before, and keep the second morning free.
