Santorini has one airport, code JTR. It is a small, single-terminal airport about 4 miles (6 km) from Fira, the island's capital. Many hotels on the island are a short drive away. In summer, though, the tricky part is finding a ride, because taxis are scarce. If you land in July or August, book a transfer before you fly.
Where is Santorini Airport and what is it like?
The airport sits on the east side of the island, with the beach town of Kamari to the south and the village of Monolithos to the north. The terminal is a single small building where arrivals, departures, domestic flights and international flights all come together. There are no jet bridges. You step off the plane and walk across the apron to the building, so wear comfortable shoes for the flight.
Inside, most flights share a single baggage carousel, and bags can take 15 to 30 minutes when several planes land close together. In peak season the terminal fills up fast, with long lines at check-in and security.
How do you fly to Santorini?
Athens is the year-round link, and the flight from Athens International Airport takes 50 minutes. Flights from Thessaloniki take 1 hour and 30 minutes. In winter the schedule shrinks to mostly Athens. From spring through fall, direct flights arrive from many European cities, London most commonly. Airlines on these routes include Aegean Airlines, Ryanair, Jet2.com, Lufthansa, Transavia, Volotea, Wizz Air, Norwegian, SAS, Finnair and Qatar Airways. Without a direct flight, connect in Athens, where Aegean has the most frequencies and the best connection times.
What facilities does the airport have?
Expect the basics. The terminal has free WiFi, ATMs, a phone shop selling SIM cards, car rental desks in Arrivals, free charging stations and a handful of cafes, with food before and after security. Past security, Hellenic Duty Free stocks Greek spirits, olive oil, cosmetics and souvenirs. The airport has parking and provides accessible travel information for passengers with reduced mobility.
There's no luggage storage and no lounge of any kind, so a Priority Pass or a business class ticket won't buy you a quiet corner. If you land before check-in time, ask your hotel to hold your bags, since most Santorini hotels will. Charging spots are limited and often taken, so leave your hotel with a full battery. Airside food is airport-priced, so eat a proper meal in town first.
How do you get from the airport to Fira?
Fira is the easiest town to reach. Fira is about 10 to 15 minutes away by car, and a direct bus runs there from the airport.
The public bus runs between the airport and Fira's main bus station in roughly 12 to 15 minutes. 2026 prices: the ride costs 2,20 €. You buy your ticket from the conductor, so carry small change. The stop is just outside the terminal. Buses run roughly hourly in summer and aren't timed to flights. The schedule also changes often, so check the KTEL Santorini timetable shortly before you travel. The bus suits light packers staying in Fira. From the station, most caldera hotels are a short walk, though some are uphill or up steps. With heavy bags or a late arrival, take a car.
Taxis wait outside Arrivals. You don't need to reserve one, but that doesn't mean one will be there. Santorini has a fairly small number of licensed taxis for the whole island. When several flights land close together in summer, the line can stretch to half an hour or more. Drivers often quote a flat price, so it helps to agree on it before you get in. Uber works here, but it simply hails those same taxis, so the wait can be just as long, and Lyft doesn't operate on the island. Your phone signal can be patchy just after you land, so save your hotel's address and phone number as a screenshot to show your driver. In late May, June and September the airport is calmer and taxis are easier to find.
A pre-booked private transfer takes the guesswork out of arrival. The driver waits in Arrivals with your name and handles your bags, and many drivers track your flight in case it's late. If you're staying on the caldera, a car often can't reach your door, because many hotels sit on pedestrian lanes or down steps. A driver gets you as close as possible, and a private driver will likely call your hotel to send a porter.
How do you get to Oia, other towns and the ferry port?
Oia is a 25 to 30 minute drive in normal traffic, and no direct bus goes there. By bus, ride to Fira and switch to the Oia bus, buying a new ticket for each leg. That route suits travelers with light bags and time to spare. With big bags, kids or a late arrival, book a transfer. Many Oia and Imerovigli hotels arrange their own airport transfers. These cost more than an independent driver, but the drivers coordinate directly with the hotel porters.
You also change buses in Fira for Imerovigli, Firostefani, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri and Pyrgos. By car, Imerovigli is about 15 to 20 minutes away and Perissa 20 to 25, and summer traffic around Fira can add time. From Fira, bus tickets to Perissa cost 2,70 €, and tickets to Kamari and Akrotiri cost 2,20 € each. For central Pyrgos, take the Perissa bus. Solo travelers can also consider shared shuttles, which make several stops at hotels around the island. If two or more of you are traveling together, it's worth weighing the combined cost against a private transfer before you book.
Athinios Port, where passenger ferries dock, sits on the west coast and is roughly a 25 minute drive from the airport. No bus links the two directly. One option is the airport bus to Fira and a second bus from there to the port, and another is a private transfer that takes you all the way in one go. Make sure your driver knows you need Athinios, since the Old Port below Fira is used by cruise ships and smaller boats.
Should you rent a car at the airport?
Yes, if you want to explore beaches, villages and wineries on your own schedule. The airport is the easiest place on the island to pick up a car. It is far simpler than collecting one in Fira, Oia or at the busy ferry port. Hertz and Avis are among the companies with desks in Arrivals, and others meet you at the airport or shuttle you to a nearby lot.
Book ahead. Walk-up cars can run out in July and August. Automatics go first, since manual cars are far more common in Greece. Roads are narrow and parking in Fira and Oia is scarce. For a short stay based in Fira, buses and taxis will get you around.
How early should you arrive for your flight out?
Plan on 2 hours before departure. For international flights or flights in July and August, allow 2.5 hours. The terminal is small, but lines build fast when several flights leave close together. Summer traffic around Fira and Messaria can also slow the drive, so allow more than the driving time alone.
Check-in and security share one level, and once through security you're in the airside area with its cafes and duty-free shop. The terminal isn't a place to linger. With a few hours before your flight, Fira or Kamari, each about 10 minutes away by car, make a nicer place to wait than the terminal, and you can head out later.
