Mykonos in October: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

October suits travelers who want warm days, a swimmable sea and a quiet island. The party crowds have gone home, the beaches empty out and Mykonos turns sleepy and calm. September is livelier and warmer, November quieter and cooler.

What is the weather like in Mykonos in October?

Mykonos weather from September to November (long-term averages)
Month Average high Average low Sea Rainy days Daylight (15th)
September 78°F (26°C) 69°F (20°C) 76°F (25°C) 1 12 h 22
October 71°F (22°C) 63°F (17°C) 73°F (23°C) 4 11 h 09
November 64°F (18°C) 56°F (14°C) 68°F (20°C) 6 10 h 06

The sea is the pleasant surprise. After a long summer of sun it is as warm as it was in June, even a touch warmer, so a swim on a sunny afternoon is very doable. You may not spend the whole day in a swimsuit, but a few brave swimmers are still out, and with so few people around you can have a stretch of beach to yourself for an afternoon.

October is also when the wetter weather starts, so expect some showers and the odd cloudy sky. Evenings turn mild. Little Venice glows at sunset, and early fall sunsets are often especially vivid and far less crowded than in summer.

Mykonos is nicknamed the Island of the Winds. By October the strong summer Meltemi has moved off, and the breeze is usually light to moderate, a little stronger along the coast.

How does October compare with September and November?

September is the warm, easy month. The sea is still very warm, rain is almost absent and the nightlife keeps its momentum, with the last big club party coming around mid-month.

October trades some of that heat for peace. The air cools, a few more showers drift through and the sea gives up a few degrees. Early in the month feels like a gentle extension of September, with good beach weather and a lively enough Mykonos Town. By the end, the island is very quiet.

November has a different mood. Days are shorter, rain is more frequent, and swimming takes a late warm spell and real luck. A little still goes on in Mykonos Town, but the beaches are mostly deserted. Pick October if you want the island at half volume, and September if you want it at full.

Is October a good time to visit Mykonos?

For a traveler who wants calm, yes. Early October often brings pleasant weather, and the quieter pace means the old town's lanes feel peaceful, with sun loungers easier to come by. If you want to write, read, walk and eat well, October delivers.

The trade-off is that things close. The beach clubs shut by late September, so if you want dancing and DJs, pick another month; a few bars in Mykonos Town still keep the evenings going. By the middle of October many hotels and restaurants start closing for the season. Check the closing dates for your hotel and any restaurant you have your heart set on, and don't assume anything is open.

Stay in Mykonos Town, where the open restaurants and bars are concentrated. Hotels cost much less than in summer, though food, drink and transportation prices barely change with the season. Flights and ferries also run less often than in high season.

If Santorini is part of the trip, the direct ferry between the two islands usually runs until late October, often on a smaller SeaJet boat that can give a bumpy ride. Check the schedule before you commit, because once it stops you have to go through Athens by plane or ferry. Ferry cancellations do happen, so many travelers choose to be on Mykonos the night before a flight home.

What is there to do in Mykonos in October?

Wander Mykonos Town. Its maze of side streets is a pleasure when it's calm, and getting happily lost is part of the point. Many boutiques run end-of-season sales, and some shopkeepers are open to a deal.

Take the 30-minute ferry to Delos, the legendary birthplace of Apollo and a UNESCO site that sees far fewer visitors outside the busy season. Climb Mount Kynthos for a view over the surrounding Cyclades, and expect a gusty summit. Rineia, another islet, held the extensive necropolis of ancient Delos in Classical and Hellenistic times.

From there, explore small towns and beaches away from the popular spots, where the landscape rolls quietly down to the sea. Greek law requires a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Thieves in Greece break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables, and luggage, so take your passport and bags with you when you park. For beaches near town, take the bus.

The October wind also makes for good kite surfing.

What should you pack for Mykonos in October?

Think layers. T-shirts and a swimsuit for the day, then a sweater or light jacket for the evening. A windbreaker earns its space in the suitcase. Bring a small umbrella or a light rain shell, comfortable walking shoes for the lanes and the hills, and a sun hat that can be strapped down. Sunscreen is still worth packing for the sunny hours.

What do Americans need to enter Greece?

U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and a passport you've reported lost or stolen will not get you in. Officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure. Greece is generally safe, but petty crime is common in tourist areas, so keep valuables close. Strikes in the transportation sector are common and can shut down ferries and airports, so build some slack into your plans.
