Mykonos Airport (JMK) is a small, single-terminal airport about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) southeast of Mykonos Town, so your hotel or the ferry dock is usually only minutes away. The terminal was fully renovated and feels modern, but its services are basic, and summer crowds fill it quickly.
Where is Mykonos Airport and how big is it?
The airport sits in the island's interior, southeast of Mykonos Town (Chora), which lines the west coast around its harbor.
The airport opened in 1971, and it remains a small airport with one terminal even though it ranks among the ten busiest in Greece. Fraport Greece took over in 2015, and a major renovation finished in 2021. The new building takes its cue from the island's pigeon houses, so the Cycladic look greets you the moment you step off the plane.
How do you fly to Mykonos?
The easiest route is usually a flight into Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos), then a short hop to the island. The Athens to Mykonos flight takes about 45 minutes, and the flight from Thessaloniki takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. In summer, many international airlines and charters fly in directly. In winter, service is mostly domestic, primarily Aegean and Olympic.
Can you take a ferry to Mykonos instead of flying?
Yes. Ferries run from Piraeus, Athens' main port, and the crossing typically takes around 2 hours 40 minutes, though slower boats can take close to 6 hours. Piraeus is about 45 minutes from Athens airport by taxi. The port of Rafina is much closer to the airport, and in summer SEAJETS runs up to four daily routes from Rafina that stop at Mykonos.
Ferries dock at the New Port in Tourlos, about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) north of town.
What's inside the terminal?
Mostly the essentials, and they're well run:
- Free Wi-Fi (join the Fraport-Free network) and charging points
- An information desk, ATMs and a 24-hour currency exchange office
- Ramps, accessible toilets and special assistance for travelers with reduced mobility
- A duty-free shop, plus a jewelry store, a telecom shop, an eyewear shop and a clothes-and-accessories shop
- Cafés and restaurants, including Pret A Manger in the Schengen departures area and Herbs & Olives on the ground floor in the free-access zone
Duty free offers "Reserve & Collect": order perfume, spirits or gifts from home and pick them up when you land. An airside lounge run by Goldair Handling serves food and drinks in a Myconian-style room. A separate private flights lounge, the Delos Lounge, adds VIP services, including fully private boarding.
How do you get from the airport to Mykonos Town?
Your choices are a taxi or transfer, the public bus, or a rental car, and the best one depends on your luggage, your budget and where you're staying.
Taxi or pre-booked transfer
The taxi rank is right in front of the terminal. Mykonos has relatively few taxis, though, so in busy hours you may wait in line. A taxi or minibus booked ahead and waiting when you land is the quickest way into town. Some hotels in town also run private minibus pickups, so ask yours when you book.
Bus
The public KTEL bus runs from the airport into town, and its stop sits just outside the terminal doors, opposite the taxi rank. Buses run directly to the Southern Bus Station near Fabrika Square in Chora, where you can connect to Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Platis Gialos, Paraga and the other south-coast beaches.
Rental car
Rent a car if you're staying on the east or north of the island, where you'll need your own wheels. In Town, Ornos or Psarou you can manage largely without a car, and Mykonos Town has mostly pedestrian pathways, so a car or bike is of little use there. Many visitors rent a quad or a scooter instead, and hotel concierges can often arrange one.
How do you get from the airport to the ferry port?
The transfer from the airport to the port is a short drive of a few kilometers. A pre-booked taxi or minibus waiting on arrival is a handy way to make a ferry connection. On a tighter budget, take the KTEL bus to Fabrika, which also has buses to the New Port.
Day trips to Delos leave from the Old Port, next to Mykonos Town.
How do you get around once you land?
The island is small: nowhere on Mykonos is more than about half an hour from anywhere else. Mykonos Town has two main bus stations about 15 minutes apart on foot. Fabrika serves the south-coast beaches, and the Old Port station serves Agios Stefanos, Ano Mera, Elia and Kalafatis.
On the water, taxis run between the south-coast beaches from Ornos through Platis Gialos to Elia, roughly May to October. For beach hopping, take the bus from town to Platis Gialos, then hop between beaches by water taxi.
What should you know about flying private in peak season?
Private flights generally need a slot and prior permission (PPR), so it helps to arrange both well ahead with your handler. In season, aircraft are limited to about 40 minutes on the ground and can't park overnight. The jet drops off its passengers and then flies elsewhere to park, usually Athens, roughly 35 minutes away.
The 6,244-foot runway suits light and midsize jets comfortably, and many super midsize ones as well. When no slot can be found, flying a jet into Athens and continuing by helicopter to Mykonos works well.
Are there closures or flight disruptions to plan around?
The exceptions are 22, 24 and 31 December 2026 and 5 and 7 January 2027.
In summer, the strong northerly wind called the meltemi earns Mykonos its nickname, the Island of the Winds. It rarely closes the airport, but it can bring crosswinds and a bumpy approach.
If your winter dates fall on or near a Thursday, check directly with your airline or travel agent, because they handle any schedule changes.
