May is one of the best months to be in Crete. The island is warm, green and in bloom, wildflowers cover the hillsides, the beaches are quiet, and the summer rush has yet to arrive.

What is the weather like in Crete in May?
| Month | Average high | Average low | Sea | Rainfall | Sunshine per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| April | 68°F (20°C) | 54°F (12°C) | 62°F (17°C) | 0.9 in (24 mm) | 8.1 h |
| May | 75°F (24°C) | 60°F (16°C) | 66°F (19°C) | 0.5 in (12 mm) | 10.0 h |
| June | 82°F (28°C) | 68°F (20°C) | 72°F (22°C) | 0.1 in (2 mm) | 12.0 h |
Expect long, sunny days with strong sun and a gentle breeze off the water, especially along the coast. Rain is rare, and when a shower does pass through, it tends to be brief. Crete also has two climates in one. The mountains that run east to west across the island block the northwesterly winds, so the south runs hotter and drier than the north.
Evenings are mild enough for dinner outside at a taverna, though the air cools once the sun goes down.
The sea still lags behind the air. It's refreshing, perfect for a quick dip after a hot hike, and it warms steadily as the month goes on. Long, lazy swims are easier in June.
How does May compare with April and June?
April is cooler, the sea is chillier, and showers are a little more likely.
June is a real step up. Days are hotter, the sea is noticeably warmer and beach days get easier, but the island moves closer to peak summer, with the crowds and prices that come with it.
May sits in the sweet spot, with warm days, wildflowers, room on the sand and prices below peak summer.
Is May a good time to visit Crete?
Yes, especially if you like your beaches peaceful. Crete in May is lively but far from crowded. You can take Knossos and the Samaria Gorge at your own pace without jostling through big groups. Chania and Rethymno feel welcoming, with space to wander their cobblestone streets and harbors.
Money goes further, too. Flights and hotels usually cost less than in peak summer, and booking flights early tends to help with fares. Places to stay run from family-run rooms at the budget end, through mid-range hotels and guesthouses, to luxury beachfront resorts. At the top of the range, Elounda is a luxury resort with views of the lagoon and the island-fortress of Spinalonga.
The villages come alive with spring festivities, with traditional music, dancing and food. Greek Orthodox Easter usually falls in April, but in some places the festive mood spills into early May.
What is there to do in Crete in May?
Start with the ruins. Knossos, in Heraklion, and Phaistos are less crowded than in summer, which makes the Minoan past easier to take in slowly.
Then get outdoors. The Samaria Gorge offers about 10 miles (16 km) of hiking through a unique biosphere reserve, with narrow passages that rise nearly 1,640 feet (500 meters) high. Wildflowers cover the hillsides this month, and botanical parks show off the island's unusual plants in bloom.
Beaches come next. Elafonisi Beach is known for its pink sands. Take a day trip out to Spinalonga or Gramvousa, or go snorkeling or diving in the clear water.
Wander through Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos, and eat well along the way. May is also the season for dishes with artichokes, greens and fava beans. A glass of raki or Cretan wine is the classic way to finish a meal, and a vineyard visit lets you try the local varieties.
Many smaller places in Crete may prefer cash, so it can help to have some euros on hand. Some sites and restaurants keep different hours or close on Sundays, so check before you set out.
How do you get around Crete?
Buses are reliable and cheap. Be sure to have a ticket and validate it before riding, since traveling without one, with the wrong one, or without validating it could bring a fine of up to 60 times the basic fare.
A rental car gives you more freedom to reach beaches and villages. Greek law requires visitors to carry a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Drive carefully: Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the EU, talking or texting on a phone while driving is illegal, and police run random alcohol tests. Thieves seek out rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so keep them out of the car when you park.
What should you pack for Crete in May?
Think light and breathable: t-shirts, shorts, sundresses and swimwear. The sun is strong, so bring a hat, sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen. Pack comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone streets and trails.
Add a light jacket or cardigan for mornings and evenings, and maybe jeans or longer pants for breezier nights. If you plan to step into a church or monastery, a light scarf or shawl in your bag makes it easy to cover your shoulders. A small daypack and a water bottle earn their keep on hikes. A compact umbrella or light rain jacket is cheap insurance, though you probably won't need it.
What do Americans need to know before traveling to Greece?
U.S. citizens may enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and you may be asked for proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure. A passport that has been reported lost or stolen will not get you in, so travel on one in good standing.
Greece is a generally safe destination, but petty crime is common in popular tourist spots, so watch your bags at busy sites. Demonstrations and transportation strikes can occur with little notice and interrupt buses, taxis, ports and airports, so leave a little slack in your schedule around flight and ferry days.
