Wekiwa Springs in February: Weather, Water Temperature, Crowds and a Day Trip

A U.S. Geological Survey gauge in the Wekiwa Springs basin read 75.6°F (24.2°C) on September 11, 2026, and the spring reads close to that on any day of the year, February included. The air above it moves. Orlando’s official February normals put the average afternoon at 74.9°F and the average dawn at 52.4°F, so a swim at noon and a swim at breakfast can feel like two different trips.

February also holds the lowest precipitation of the three-month stretch around it: 2.04 inches, against 2.48 in January and 3.03 in March. Mornings stay cool, though, and we could not read the park’s entrance fee or opening hour, so a check of the official site belongs in your plans before you drive.

Most visitors fly into Orlando International, whose airfield thermometer supplies the climate normals below, about 44 km (27 miles) from the spring. The park across the whole year has its own home in our Wekiwa Springs guide, flights sit in our Florida flights guide, and statewide timing in the best time to visit Florida.

Wekiwa Springs weather in February: average highs, lows and rain days

Days with 0.10 in or more 3.8
Days with 1 in or more 0.5

These are NOAA NCEI’s official 1991-2020 normals for station USW00012815, the thermometer at Orlando International Airport, roughly 44 km (27 miles) from the spring. A station normal comes from a real instrument, while a reanalysis such as ERA5 models a grid cell, and the two can disagree. Every figure here is the airport’s, and it describes the air: an average high of 74.9°F, a low of 52.4°F and 2.04 inches of precipitation. We have no thermometer in the wooded basin itself.

Measurable rain, 0.10 inch or more, falls on 3.8 days in an average February, roughly one day in seven. A soaking of an inch or more comes on 0.5 day, so about every other February holds one. Most wet days therefore bring less than an inch. For a day trip, a dry window is the likely case, and a light rain shell in the car covers the rest.

Between the average dawn and the average afternoon lie 22.5°F. Pack for both ends: a fleece or light jacket for arrival, a T-shirt for midday, and a towel plus a dry warm layer for climbing out of the water, when wet skin meets morning air that can still sit in the low 50s.

On February 15 the sun rises at 7:03 a.m. and sets at 6:16 p.m. Eastern time, converted from sunrise-sunset.org’s 12:03 and 23:16 UTC, for 11 hours 14 minutes of daylight. Light starts to go soon after 6 p.m., so a paddle down the river should turn back with time to reach the launch before then.

How warm is Wekiwa Springs in February?

February’s average range at the airport runs from 52.4°F to 74.9°F. Against it, the 75.6°F gauge reading sits 0.7°F above the average high and 23.2°F above the average low. That water figure is one instantaneous USGS reading, taken September 11, 2026. Ocean tables usually average daily maxima, and an average of daily maxima reads a little warmer than a 24-hour mean. We hold no monthly series of that kind for the spring, only the gauge and its year-round steadiness.

Mornings call for long sleeves and afternoons for short ones. At dawn the water is warmer than the air by more than 20°F, so the chilly moment comes after the swim, on the walk back to the car. By mid-afternoon on an average day, air and water sit within a degree of each other, and a swimsuit under a shirt is enough.

Freezing nights are rare but on record: an average February counts 0.2 nights at 32°F or below at the airport station, about one such night every five Februaries. If a forecast shows one during your trip, move the swim to the afternoon and give the morning to the trails.

How busy is Wekiwa Springs in February? Crowds and prices

February falls inside Florida’s November-to-April dry season, and our Florida overview names holiday weeks and spring break as the statewide price peaks. We found no occupancy series or monthly hotel rates for the area around the park, so we crown no February week cheap or expensive.

The state counts 325 parking spaces at Wekiwa Springs State Park, and when the lot fills, the gate closes. Our sources tie those closures to summer Saturdays and hold no February count, so treat a winter weekend with the same care and aim for the gate near opening time. For rooms we have no lead-time data, and we give no number of weeks.

We could not verify the lodging-tax rate for hotels near the park, so we give no percentage. Ask for the total with taxes and fees when you book, and use our Florida trip-cost guide for the wider budget.

Spending more matters most on location. A room a short drive from the park puts you at the gate before the lot fills, while a cheaper bed across Orlando adds traffic to the one hour that counts. Our Florida where-to-stay guide compares the bases.

With afternoons averaging 74.9°F, a February hike works after lunch as well as before, and a paddle can run from breakfast to mid-afternoon in mild air. By March the average high already reaches 78.9°F.

The state’s facility inventory for Wekiwa Springs State Park counts 1 designated swimming area, 1,435 feet of boardwalk, 1 launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, 15.9 miles of paddling trail and 13.7 miles of hiking trail. The swim area sits over water the USGS gauge put at 75.6°F. We could not read an entrance fee or opening hour: floridastateparks.org refused our automated reads, and fees vary by park and season, so check the official site before you drive.

In January the average high, 71.8°F, sits 3.8°F under the water reading. In March, at 78.9°F, the air runs 3.3°F above it. February lands between, 0.7°F under, so a midday swim feels close to neutral on an average day.

We could not read the park’s fees, so we cannot tell you which parts of a February visit cost nothing. Our sources also hold no manatee count for Wekiwa, and we give no sighting odds. For winter manatee trips elsewhere in the state, see our guide to swimming with manatees.

Wekiwa Springs day trip in February

Sunrise on February 15 comes at 7:03 a.m. Look up the opening hour on the official park site the evening before, since we could not verify it, and plan to reach the gate close to that time: the lot holds 325 cars, and a full lot shuts the gate. Walk the boardwalk first, in a fleece, while the air is nearest its 52.4°F average low. Put the canoe or kayak in at the launch in the second half of the morning, while the air warms.

Save the swim for early afternoon, when the 74.9°F average high brings air and water within a degree. If one of February’s 3.8 rain days arrives, a short wait usually does it, since most wet days bring less than an inch. If a cold front pushes the day below normal, reverse the order: trails first, a short swim at the warmest hour, then dry clothes. Be off the water before the 6:16 p.m. sunset. The 7-day Florida itinerary shows how a day like this fits a longer trip.

Across the three months, the average high climbs from 71.8°F to 74.9°F to 78.9°F, and the low from 49.5°F to 52.4°F to 55.8°F. February holds the least precipitation, 2.04 inches, against 2.48 in January and 3.03 in March, while rain days barely move: 4.0, 3.8 and 4.0. The spring water stays near its 75.6°F reading through all three.

Shift four weeks earlier, into January, and you give up 3.1°F on the afternoon and 2.9°F on the dawn for 0.44 inch more rain. Shift four weeks later, into March, and you gain 4.0°F on the high and 3.4°F on the low, at the cost of 0.99 inch more precipitation and a calendar that runs into spring break, one of the statewide price peaks.

Is February a good time to visit Wekiwa Springs?

Yes, for hikers, paddlers and swimmers who can handle a cool start. February carries the lowest precipitation of January through March and afternoons near 75°F. It suits less well anyone who wants to lounge wet on the bank at breakfast, when the average air sits around 52°F.

If warm air all day matters more to you than dry skies, choose March: its 78.9°F average high lifts the afternoon above the water, and its 55.8°F low softens the mornings. Wekiwa Springs in March has the details.

Of these three months, February is the one where the average afternoon high, 74.9°F, lands within a degree of the spring’s 75.6°F reading.

The last word

Wekiwa is one of six springs Florida law names by hand as an Outstanding Florida Spring, alongside De Leon, Peacock, Poe, Rock Springs and Gemini, protected under Florida Statutes 373.802(5) without having to qualify as a first-magnitude spring. In February that protected water meets its mildest match of the winter. Reach the gate near opening, walk the boardwalk in a fleece, and slip into the basin after lunch, when the air has climbed to meet it.
