WEKIWA SPRINGS · JANUARY · CENTRAL FLORIDA
A spring keeps its own thermostat. On September 11, 2026 the USGS instrument at Wekiwa Springs read 75.6°F (24.2°C), and it reads close to that on whatever date you pick, January included. The air above it is the part that moves with the calendar: average afternoons of 71.8°F this month, mornings near 49.5°F, and a little over ten and a half hours of daylight to fit everything into.
The park counts 13.7 miles of hiking trail and 15.9 miles of paddling trail, and January is the month that makes covering them pleasant instead of sweaty. The trade comes before nine in the morning. Dawn averages 49.5°F, about 1.1 nights in a typical January drop to 32°F or below, and the water you climb into at one o’clock is warmer than the air you climbed out of.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · WEKIWA SPRINGS
January gives Wekiwa its best walking air of the winter and a spring still at swimming temperature, provided you accept 49.5°F mornings and a lot that holds 325 cars.

Wekiwa runs on two clocks. The spring holds its temperature all year. The air over it does not, and every figure below is dated to January, measured by a thermometer about 27 miles from the swimming area. For the park outside the calendar, the main Wekiwa Springs guide has the year-round shape, and Florida month by month places January in state context.
Wekiwa Springs weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days
| January measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average high | 71.8°F |
| Average low | 49.5°F |
| Precipitation | 2.48 inches |
| Days with 0.10 inch or more | 4.0 |
| Days with 1 inch or more | 0.7 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 1.1 |
| Daylight on January 15 | 10h 33m |
| Spring water (gauge reading) | 75.6°F |
The air numbers are NOAA NCEI monthly normals for 1991 to 2020, read at station USW00012815, Orlando International Airport, about 27 miles from the spring. That is a real thermometer with a long run behind it, not a modeled grid cell, and the distance is worth knowing before you treat 71.8°F as the reading at the swimming area itself. January averages a high of 71.8°F, a low of 49.5°F and 2.48 inches of precipitation. All of it describes the air above the park, never the water in it.
4.0 days in an average January collect at least 0.10 inch, so roughly one day in eight arrives wet. Inch-plus days average 0.7 per January, meaning a genuine soaking is not the normal case. Translated into a visit: most January rain here is a band that passes while you wait it out under a roof, and the swim goes ahead afterward because nothing about the spring changes when it rains.
The spread between those two anchor figures is 22.3°F, and that is the packing problem in one number. Fleece and long pants for the first two hours, a t-shirt by early afternoon, swim gear that comes off into something dry. A towel you can get warm in matters more than a hat. Campers should pack a real sleeping bag rather than a summer liner.
On January 15 the sun comes up at 7:18 am and goes down at 5:51 pm local time, 10 hours 33 minutes between them. The light goes soft in the run well before that second figure, and the warmth leaves faster than the daylight does. Put the water in the middle of the day, the trail at the tail end, and aim to be walking back toward the lot by five.
Can you swim in Wekiwa Springs in January? Water temperature and the morning chill
The month’s two anchor figures, 71.8°F by afternoon and 49.5°F at dawn, both sit below the water. The USGS gauge at the spring read 75.6°F, a single instantaneous measurement rather than a monthly mean, and groundwater does not swing the way a lake or a bay does. So the answer is yes: the spring runs 3.8°F warmer than an average January afternoon and 26.1°F warmer than an average January dawn.
In practice the day sorts itself. Mornings at 49.5°F are for walking, and the first hour on a trail is the warmest thing you will do before ten. The swimming hours run roughly noon to four, when the air is closest to its 71.8°F ceiling. After the swim, reverse the order: dry clothes first, boardwalk second, because the afternoon loses its warmth quickly once the sun drops toward 5:51 pm.
Freezing nights get counted too. 1.1 nights in an average January fall to 32°F or below at the Orlando airport station. That is a camping question rather than a swimming one, since the spring holds its temperature through any cold snap. If a front lands inside your dates, change the sleeping bag and the start time, not the plan to get in the water.
How busy is Wekiwa Springs in January? Parking, fees and booking
January falls in Florida’s dry winter half, the stretch when warm weather is the whole product. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the Wekiwa corridor, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. What can be counted is capacity: the state’s facilities inventory lists 325 parking spaces at Wekiwa Springs State Park, one lot, one gate. When those spaces fill, the gate closes, and the state frames that as the summer Saturday scenario rather than a January one.
That puts arrival time ahead of lead time. We could not verify the reservation window for the park’s campground, so we give no number of weeks, and 325 is the number doing the work either way. Being parked by mid-morning removes the question on a winter weekday. For beds outside the gate, our Florida where-to-stay guide covers the regions and the trip-cost guide handles the budget layer.
On money we are short two figures and will not pretend otherwise. We could not verify the county lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. The park’s entrance fee is the same story: floridastateparks.org returns a 403 to our automated reads, fees differ by park and by season, and a price lifted from another Florida park would not transfer. Check the official site or call the park the week you travel.
If one line of the budget deserves the upgrade in January, it is the boat. The park holds 15.9 miles of paddling trail and exactly one canoe, kayak and tube launch, and a hull turns a walk-in visit into a half-day on the water. We could not verify the concession’s rental rates, so bring that question to the launch rather than a number from us.
Things to do in Wekiwa Springs in January

13.7 miles of hiking trail at an average 71.8°F is a different sport from the same miles under August heat, and January never makes you choose between the walk and the swim. The water stays at swimming temperature while the air sits at walking temperature. Both fit inside the same 10 hours 33 minutes of daylight, which is the part that needs planning.
What the park holds, counted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection: one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, 13.7 miles of hiking trail, 1,435 feet of boardwalk and 325 parking spaces. The single swimming area is the figure that shapes a busy day, since everyone who wants to get in the water gets in at the same place. The boardwalk is the part that works in any weather and any pair of shoes.
The water reading does not move between months. The air does, and among the three winter months January opens the widest gap: the spring sits 3.8°F above January’s average afternoon, 1.8°F above December’s and 0.7°F above February’s. The step into the run therefore feels like relief in January and like a mild shock in the warmer weeks either side of it.
We could not verify any January fee waiver or free-entry day, so we name none. What costs nothing beyond the gate is most of the park: 13.7 miles of trail, 1,435 feet of boardwalk and the swimming area itself. A towel is the only equipment that day requires.
Wekiwa Springs in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at the gate, and we could not verify the opening hour, so confirm it with the park. Sunrise on January 15 is 7:18 am, and the first two hours belong to the trail: take a loop off the 13.7 miles while the air is still climbing toward 71.8°F. Walk the 1,435 feet of boardwalk around eleven. Swim between noon and four. Be back at the car before the 5:51 pm sunset pulls the light out of the run.
The second day goes on the water. The single launch feeds 15.9 miles of paddling trail, so put the boat in early and turn around on a clock rather than on a landmark. If the date lands on one of the 4.0 wet days an average January carries, swap the order: the trail handles rain better than a picnic table does, and 75.6°F water is indifferent to what falls on it. Only an inch-plus day, and January averages 0.7 of them, is worth moving the plan for.
Wekiwa Springs in January vs December and February
| Measure | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 73.8°F | 71.8°F | 74.9°F |
| Average low | 52.9°F | 49.5°F | 52.4°F |
| Precipitation | 2.48 in | 2.48 in | 2.04 in |
| Days with 0.10 inch or more | 3.7 | 4.0 | 3.8 |
| Spring water (gauge reading) | 75.6°F | 75.6°F | 75.6°F |
Of the three, January is the coolest by air: its 71.8°F average high runs 2.0°F under December and 3.1°F under February, and its 49.5°F average low sits 3.4°F under December and 2.9°F under February. Rain almost ties across the trio. January collects 2.48 inches over 4.0 days of 0.10 inch or more, December the same 2.48 inches over 3.7 days, February the least at 2.04 inches over 3.8 days. The spring reads 75.6°F through all three.
Shifting four weeks forward buys 3.1°F of afternoon, 0.44 inch less rain and marginally longer days. It buys nothing in the water, and it costs the widest spring-to-air gap of the winter. Shifting four weeks back to December buys 2.0°F and one fewer wet day, at the price of the holiday fortnight, for which we found no attendance figures at this park.
Is January a good time to visit Wekiwa Springs?
Yes, if the point of the trip is moving. Hikers, paddlers and anyone who would rather cover 13.7 miles at 71.8°F than under summer heat get the better version of this park in January. No, if the point is a long lazy day in a swimsuit: with mornings at 49.5°F and afternoons topping out near 71.8°F, this is a month where you swim for an hour and then get dressed.
If that reads like a no, aim at February instead. It brings 74.9°F afternoons, 2.04 inches of rain, the driest of the three months, and the identical 75.6°F water. The catch is the mornings: February’s average low rises only 2.9°F over January’s, so dawn stays a fleece proposition either way.
Among these three months, January alone sends you into water 3.8°F warmer than the air you left, on trails comfortable from the first mile to the last.
The last word
Decide the arrival hour and January handles the rest: park before mid-morning, walk first, swim between noon and four, dry off well before 5:51 pm. The water you get into has a legal name, too. Florida Statutes 373.802(5) lists Wekiwa as an Outstanding Florida Spring, one of six named by hand alongside De Leon, Peacock, Poe, Rock Springs and Gemini, which is the state protecting a spring without waiting for it to be big enough.
