WEKIWA SPRINGS · APRIL · THE MONTH GUIDE
April hands Wekiwa Springs an average high of 83.6°F and an average low of 60.7°F, and hands the spring itself nothing at all. The USGS gauge on the spring read 75.6°F (24.2°C) on September 11, 2026, and it reads close to that on any date you pick. What April changes is the air above the water, not the swim.
Against March, April adds 4.7°F to the average high and subtracts 0.45 inch of rain. Against May, it subtracts 4.8°F of afternoon heat and 1.44 inches. Those two gaps decide whether a spring weekend is spent walking or hiding from the sun, and both come out of the same NOAA normals.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · WEKIWA SPRINGS · APRIL
April is the last month before Florida’s heat and rain both climb: 83.6°F afternoons, 2.58 inches of rain, and spring water sitting near 75.6°F exactly as it does in every other month.
AVERAGE HIGH 83.6°F · 3.9 WET DAYS · 12 H 55 MIN OF DAYLIGHT ON APRIL 15
Go for: 13.7 miles of hiking trail at 83.6°F instead of May’s 88.4°F, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, and a swim that works on any date of the year.
Think twice before: arriving late on a warm Saturday. The state counts 325 parking spaces, and when the lot fills the gate closes.

Two thermometers feed this month. Every air figure here comes from NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012815 at Orlando International Airport, about 27 miles (44 km) from the park, so it describes the air over a runway rather than the air in the hammock forest. The water figure comes from a separate gauge sitting on the spring itself, USGS station 02234600.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information put April’s average high at 83.6°F, its average low at 60.7°F and its rainfall at 2.58 inches over the 1991-2020 period. Those are station normals from a physical instrument, not a grid-cell reanalysis of a model, and the two methods do not always agree. The same station and the same period supply the March and May numbers below.
3.9 days in an average April record at least 0.10 inch of rain, so measurable rain lands about one day in eight and the other seven come up dry. Only 0.6 day reaches a full inch. Spread across those few wet days, 2.58 inches is a set of interruptions rather than a lost week, and an hour under cover is usually enough to wait one out.
22.9°F separates the average high from the average low, which puts two different days inside one date. A 60.7°F dawn on a boardwalk in a wet swimsuit is genuinely cold; the same body at three in the afternoon is looking for shade. Pack a fleece you will resent carrying by ten in the morning, and a towel that dries fast, because the walk back to the car is where the chill arrives.
April 15 gives 12 hours 55 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 6:58 am and sunset at 7:53 pm local time. That leaves usable light well past dinner hour by northern standards. Put the paddling leg in the back half of the afternoon: the light holds, the lot thins, and you are not on open water at the hottest point of the day.
How warm is Wekiwa Springs in April?
83.6°F and 60.7°F are the two poles of an average April day, 22.9°F apart, and neither one is extreme by Florida standards. Afternoons sit 4.8°F below May’s 88.4°F average high. Mornings sit 4.9°F above March’s 55.8°F average low. Those few degrees are the difference between a trail day you enjoy and one you shorten.
In practice that means long sleeves for the drive out and nothing but a swimsuit by mid-morning. Early April mornings in the sixties make the 75.6°F water feel sharp on entry, and the same water at four in the afternoon feels like a reward for 13.7 miles of trail. Carry a second dry shirt for the evening, because the temperature slides back toward the low sixties after that 7:53 pm sunset.
We found no freezing-night count in the April normals we read, so we give none. What the record does carry is an average low of 60.7°F, nearly 29 degrees above freezing, with March close behind at 55.8°F. Cold is a January question at this park, not an April one, and no part of an April plan needs a contingency for it.
How busy is Wekiwa Springs in April? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Florida’s state park inventory counts 325 parking spaces at Wekiwa Springs, and that number sorts one April Saturday from another more than any price does. When the lot fills, the gate closes. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series in our sources, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. What is measurable is capacity: 325 cars, one designated swimming area, and a warm month that pushes people toward both.
Booking ahead is the obvious move and the one we cannot price. floridastateparks.org answered our automated reads with a 403 on September 11, 2026, so we publish no entrance fee, no opening hour and no reservation lead time in weeks. Check the park’s own page the week before you travel. The lot itself takes no reservation at any notice: 325 spaces, first come, and the gate shuts once they are gone.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the area, so we give no percentage and no nightly total. Read the tax line on the booking page before you compare two hotels. Our Florida trip-cost guide handles the statewide budget picture.
Money changes this month in one place, and it is the bed rather than the gate. A room close enough to have you parked at opening buys one of those 325 spaces, and nothing spent later in the day buys it back. Rental rates at the park’s single canoe, kayak and tube launch did not come back in our reads either, so bring your own boat if you own one and ask about rental prices when you call. Where to stay in Florida sorts the wider bases.
Things to do in Wekiwa Springs in April

April is the month to spend on foot. Walking 13.7 miles of hiking trail under an 83.6°F average high is a reasonable day out; covering the same ground in May, at 88.4°F and 4.02 inches of rain, is another proposition entirely. Do the trail mileage now and save the long tube float for the months when the air is the reason you get in the water.
The state’s 2024 facilities inventory counts exactly what the park holds: 1 designated swimming area, 1 canoe, kayak and tube launch, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, 13.7 miles of hiking trail, 1,435 feet of boardwalk and those 325 parking spaces. Paddling runs 2.2 miles longer than hiking, so a boat carries you deeper into the park than your legs will. No entrance fee appears anywhere in our sources, so we quote none.
The water does not move with the season; the air does, and the gap between them is what the swim feels like. In April the average high runs 8.0°F above the 75.6°F the gauge read. In March that gap narrows to 3.3°F and the spring reads cold. In May it opens to 12.8°F and the same water reads like relief. One caution on that 75.6: it is a single instantaneous reading from September 11, 2026, so treat it as the spring’s steady state rather than an April average.
We have nothing marked free to list for April. The state’s manatee pages render client-side and came back empty to our reads, so we publish no count of animals in the run either. Ask about fees, hours and what the entry covers in the same phone call, and plan the boardwalk as your wet-weather option: 1,435 feet of it, walkable while the trails drain.
Wekiwa Springs in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the 6:58 am sunrise. Be at the gate early enough to take one of the 325 spaces, then walk a first loop of the trail network while the air is still in the sixties. Swim around eleven, when the 75.6°F entry stops being a dare. Eat out of the sun, take the 1,435 feet of boardwalk in flat afternoon light, and drive back with the 7:53 pm sunset behind you.
Day two belongs on the water: the single launch, as much of the 15.9-mile paddling trail as your arms agree to, and a start early enough that the afternoon heat finds you already downstream. If the month’s one inch-plus day lands on you, remember that only 3.9 days in thirty carry measurable rain, so waiting an hour usually works better than rewriting the day. If the sky settles in for good, our statewide things-to-do guide has the indoor afternoons.
Wekiwa Springs in April vs March and May
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 78.9°F | 83.6°F | 88.4°F |
| Average low | 55.8°F | 60.7°F | 66.3°F |
| Precipitation | 3.03 in | 2.58 in | 4.02 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.0 | 3.9 | 5.7 |
| Spring water | near 75.6°F | near 75.6°F | near 75.6°F |
March runs 78.9°F and 55.8°F with 3.03 inches over 4.0 wet days. April runs 83.6°F and 60.7°F with 2.58 inches over 3.9 wet days, the driest of the three. May jumps to 88.4°F and 66.3°F with 4.02 inches over 5.7 wet days. The spring reads near 75.6°F through all of it, which is why the swim changes character without the water changing temperature.
Shift back four weeks and you save 4.7°F of afternoon heat, take on 0.1 more wet day, and swim with only 3.3°F between the air and the water. Shift forward four weeks and you buy 66.3°F mornings, then pay with 1.44 more inches of rain and 1.8 more wet days. Our March page makes the cold-entry case in full.
Is April a good time to visit Wekiwa Springs?
Yes for anyone who wants the trails as much as the swim. 83.6°F, 2.58 inches and 3.9 wet days make this the most walkable of the three spring months, and 13.7 miles of trail plus a swim genuinely fit in one Saturday. No for anyone whose whole plan is to get into 75.6°F water and stay there, because 8.0°F of air-to-water difference makes the exit brisk and April mornings colder still.
If the swim is the trip, May or later does it better: 88.4°F afternoons turn the same 75.6°F water into a reward, at a cost of 4.02 inches of rain across 5.7 wet days. If cool-weather hiking matters more than the water, March’s 78.9°F high and 55.8°F low win, and the trade is 0.45 inch of extra rain.
April alone among the three pairs an afternoon under 84°F with under three inches of rain, and that pairing is what lets a full trail day and a swim share a single 12 hour 55 minute stretch of daylight.
The last word
Florida law names this spring by hand. Statute 373.802(5) defines an Outstanding Florida Spring as every historic first-magnitude spring plus six named outright: De Leon, Peacock, Poe, Rock Springs, Wekiwa and Gemini. The state protected it without waiting for it to be big enough to qualify on volume, and the water it delivers in April is the water it delivers in August. Book the April weekend for the 13.7 miles of trail, arrive early enough for one of the 325 spaces, and leave the long float for a hotter month.
