FLORIDA · TROY SPRING · APRIL
The spring does not know what month it is. On September 11, 2026 the USGS gauge in the run read 71.4°F (21.9°C), and it reads close to that every day of the year. What April changes is the air above the water: a normal high of 80.1°F, against 74.9°F in March, which is the difference between a swim you talk yourself into and one you walk straight into.
The rest is logistics. The state counts 25 parking spaces, one designated swimming area and one launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, so a weekend here is decided by what time you get out of the car. April is kind about that: daylight runs to 8:00 p.m. by mid-month, and measurable rain shows up on about one day in seven.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · APRIL
April hands Troy Spring an 8.7°F gap between warm air and cold water, the driest wet-day count of the spring, and a 25-space lot that has not yet met the summer crowd.
AVG HIGH 80.1°F · SPRING WATER 71.4°F · 4.1 WET DAYS · 25 PARKING SPACES
Go for: warm afternoons over cold water, 0.4 miles of paddling trail from a single launch, and a weekday morning when the lot still has room.
Think twice before: counting on a posted fee, an opening hour or a manatee sighting. We could verify none of the three for Troy Spring.

One caveat before the numbers: every air figure here is measured at an airport, not at the spring, and the water figure comes from a gauge in the run itself. The two things behave nothing alike, and keeping them apart is most of the work of planning an April trip to a Florida spring.
Troy Spring weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| April at Cross City AP, FL | Normal, 1991-2020 |
|---|---|
| Average high | 80.1°F |
| Average low | 55.0°F |
| Precipitation | 2.90 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.1 |
| Days with 1.00 in or more | 0.7 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 0.1 |
| Daylight on April 15 | 12 h 58 min |
There is no weather station at the spring. The nearest set of official normals comes from NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 series at Cross City AP (station USW00012833), about 44 km away, roughly 27 miles, and that is the source of the 80.1°F high and the 55.0°F low. Those are readings from a real thermometer rather than a grid-cell reanalysis, and they describe the air only.
April delivers 2.90 inches across the month, spread over 4.1 days that record at least a tenth of an inch. Call it one wet day in seven, so a four-night trip usually meets one and rarely two. A wet day is not a lost day at a spring, either: the water sits at 71.4°F whether the sky cooperates or not, and the swim area holds up better in rain than any beach does.
The gap between the normal high and the normal low is 25.1°F, which is a north Florida spring’s signature and a packing problem. Mornings at 55°F want a fleece and long pants in the car. Afternoons at 80°F want none of it. Add one dry layer for after the swim, because 71.4°F water plus shade plus a breeze will find anyone who packed only a towel.
On April 15 the sun is up for 12 hours 58 minutes, rising at 7:02 a.m. and setting at 8:00 p.m. local time. That late finish is the month’s quiet luxury: you can still be on the water at six o’clock and have an hour of light for the drive out, which June barely improves on and January never offers.
How warm is Troy Spring in April?
Two numbers answer that, and only one of them moves. The air runs between a normal low of 55.0°F and a normal high of 80.1°F, a spread of 25.1 degrees inside a single day. The water read 71.4°F on the USGS gauge at station 02320250 on September 11, 2026, and a spring has no season. Treat that as one instantaneous reading rather than a monthly average, and expect the same figure in April.
In practice, that means two wardrobes per day. Long sleeves and closed shoes for the 7 a.m. air, stripped off by eleven. Most people gasp on the first step into 71.4°F water and are fine by the third, though anyone who chills quickly will get more out of the day in a rash guard or a shorty. The 80.1°F afternoon is what dries you off, and in March it does that job noticeably slower.
Frost is effectively finished. The Cross City normals put 0.1 nights at 32°F or below in an average April, meaning roughly one April in ten sees a single freezing night, and none of them land in the afternoon you plan to swim in.
How busy is Troy Spring in April? Crowds and prices
April is the last month of Florida’s dry season, which runs November through April statewide, so it sits at the end of the stretch that the whole state sells hardest. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for this stretch of north Florida, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can say about demand is structural, and it is short: 25 spaces.
That lot is the booking. The state’s inventory shows no day-use reservation system, and we could not read the park’s own pages (floridastateparks.org answers automated requests with a 403), so arrival time is the only lever you control. Be parked before mid-morning on a Saturday, and take a weekday if the calendar allows. For beds, the whole region is a drive rather than a resort strip, and our where-to-stay guide sorts the state’s bases.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the area, so we give no percentage here. We also could not verify an entrance fee or an opening hour for Troy Spring State Park. Fees differ from park to park and from season to season in Florida, and a price copied from another spring would be a guess wearing a decimal point. Our cost guide has the statewide ranges.
There is exactly one place where spending more changes an April day: thermal gear. A wetsuit top turns 71.4°F from a fifteen-minute dare into an afternoon, and it matters more in April than in July because the air is not yet hot enough to reset you between swims. Everything else you might rent, a boat or a bigger tube, uses the same single launch as everyone else’s.
Things to do in Troy Spring in April

April does something January cannot and July will not: it puts 80.1°F air over 71.4°F water while the parking lot is still winning. The state’s own note on capacity is blunt, since when the 25 spaces fill, the gate closes. That is a summer Saturday problem. In April the same lot usually absorbs a mid-morning arrival, and you get warm-season swimming without the queue that comes with it.
What the park holds, counted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in its 2024 facilities inventory: 1 designated swimming area, 1 launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, 0.4 miles of paddling trail, 0.3 miles of hiking trail and 50 feet of boardwalk. It is a small park with one big asset, and Florida law backs that up: the statute on Outstanding Florida Springs (373.802(5)) covers every historic first-magnitude spring the Florida Geological Survey recognizes.
The month changes none of those measurements and all of their feel. The 0.3-mile trail and the 50 feet of boardwalk are pleasant at 80°F and unpleasant at 95°F, and the 0.4-mile paddling trail is best done between eleven and four, when the air has caught up with the season. Come back in May and the same loop costs you 6.6 more degrees of heat for nothing extra.
We could not read a fee schedule, so we promise nothing free and name no free day. What costs nothing regardless is the month’s light: 12 hours 58 minutes of it on April 15, running to 8:00 p.m., which is enough for a late swim and a slow pack-up. For the wildlife side of Florida’s springs, our manatee guide covers where and when that works.
Troy Spring in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Leave early enough to be at the lot by nine, while the 25 spaces are still a formality. Walk the 0.3 miles of trail and the 50 feet of boardwalk first, in 60-degree air, and save the swimming area for eleven, when the high is climbing toward 80.1°F. Paddle the 0.4-mile trail after lunch. Dry out on the bank through the hottest hour, swim once more at five, and drive out with light until 8:00 p.m.
Day two. Repeat the good half, longer in the water now that your body has met 71.4°F once. If one of April’s 4.1 wet days lands on you, the swim still works and the trail does not, so shift the day toward the water and keep the driving for the afternoon. Our statewide things-to-do guide and the parks roundup carry the indoor and long-drive alternatives.
Troy Spring in April vs March and May
| March | April | May | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 74.9°F | 80.1°F | 86.7°F |
| Average low | 49.6°F | 55.0°F | 62.7°F |
| Precipitation | 3.53 in | 2.90 in | 2.74 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.6 | 4.1 | 4.7 |
| Spring water | Unchanged | 71.4°F | Unchanged |
April sits 5.2°F above March on the high and 6.6°F below May, with the low following the same staircase: 49.6, 55.0, 62.7. Rain is where April quietly wins, at 2.90 inches over 4.1 wet days against March’s 3.53 inches over 4.6 days and May’s 4.7 days. And since the water holds at 71.4°F through all three, the air-to-water gap goes 3.5°F in March, 8.7°F in April, 15.3°F in May.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain quiet and lose warmth, with a 74.9°F high that makes the same water feel like a decision rather than a relief. Our March page makes that case in full. Shift four weeks later and you buy 86.7°F afternoons, but you pay in wet days and in competition for those 25 spaces as the state’s school calendars start to empty.
Is April a good time to visit Troy Spring?
Yes, and for swimmers it is the best month of the first half of the year. Warm air, the lowest wet-day count of the three-month window, a lot that still opens up on a weekday, and light until eight. It is a weaker month for anyone who wanted the spring to themselves in silence, and for anyone who will not get into 71.4°F water under any circumstances, because that number is not going to improve.
If you want the water to feel warm rather than bracing, wait for May and its 86.7°F afternoons, then treat the 25 spaces as the trip’s real constraint and arrive at opening. If you want empty trails and do not mind a cold swim, March is 5.2 degrees cooler and carries 0.63 more inches of rain. Our statewide timing guide puts both inside the dry season.
No other month puts 80.1°F over 71.4°F while the gate is still easy to get through.
The last word
Pick a weekday, be parked by nine, and carry two wardrobes for a 25.1-degree day. One figure we held back: in an average April only 0.7 day records an inch of rain or more, so a genuine washout is unusual and the 4.1 lighter wet days are the ones worth planning around. Everything else at Troy Spring stays where it is, at 71.4°F, waiting for the air to make it interesting.
