THE SPACE COAST · APRIL · FLORIDA
April closes Florida’s dry season, which our Florida calendar runs from November through April. On the Space Coast, that means cool mornings, warm afternoons and an Atlantic that has warmed a few degrees since March. Rockets still stand on the skyline across the Banana River, and the beach towns have moved past spring break.
Most visitors fly into Orlando International (MCO), the airport our Florida guide matches to the Space Coast, and plan one to three nights on the coast. For a long weekend or the beach leg of a bigger vacation, the question is whether April beats March or May. We compare all three months below, with the thermometer named.

APRIL AT A GLANCE · THE SPACE COAST
Go in April for 75.0°F water, 3.9 rain days and inland highs well below May’s, and check any launch schedule before you book.
END OF THE DRY SEASON · SEA 75.0°F AT ITS DAILY PEAK · SUNSET 7:52 PM EDT
Go for: swimmable water with afternoons that stay comfortable, long evenings, and a Kennedy Space Center day that does not have to dodge May’s heat.
Think twice before: counting on bathwater sea (May averages 79.5°F) or on a launch date, since we could not verify any for April.

The Space Coast weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| April normal (1991-2020) | Orlando International |
|---|---|
| Average high | 83.6°F |
| Average low | 60.7°F |
| Precipitation | 2.58 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.9 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.6 |
| Daylight on April 15 | 12 h 55 min |
| Sunrise / sunset, April 15 | 6:57 a.m. / 7:52 p.m. EDT |
NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publish the official 1991-2020 normals we use, from station USW00012815 at Orlando International Airport: an 83.6°F average high, a 60.7°F average low and 2.58 inches of precipitation for April. That thermometer stands 60-odd kilometers (close to 40 miles) inland. On the beaches, days run cooler and nights milder, and the sea breeze Orlando never feels takes the edge off the afternoon. Read every figure here as the inland reading of the coast.
Measurable rain, 0.10 inch or more, falls on 3.9 days in an average April at the airport, roughly one day in eight. For a two-night stay, that works out to about three chances in four that both days stay dry (est., treating each day as independent). Pack a compact rain shell and keep one indoor stop in reserve.
At the airport, the average afternoon sits 22.9°F above the average dawn. The coast trims that swing at both ends, cooler at midday and milder overnight, yet a dawn walk on the sand still calls for a long-sleeve layer. Shorts, a light sweater, a sun hat and reef-friendly sunscreen cover the whole April day.
On April 15 the sun rises at 6:57 a.m. and sets at 7:52 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, about 12 hours 55 minutes of daylight according to sunrise-sunset.org. Sunrise comes straight out of the Atlantic on this east-facing shore. Dinner booked for 8 p.m. starts in the last of the light over the Indian River Lagoon side.
Can you swim in the Space Coast in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the April sea surface off the Space Coast at 75.0°F, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade lower. We had no second marine table to set against it, and we quote the single figure with its method attached.
In practice, 75.0°F water means a brisk first step and a comfortable swim once your shoulders are under. Most adults stay in for a long swim without trouble. Children and anyone who chills easily do better with a rash guard or a shorty wetsuit, plus a dry shirt and towel waiting on the sand.
We could not verify wind or swell data for April off the Space Coast, so we give no wave heights and no breeze speeds. Before you swim, check the National Weather Service surf forecast for the area, pick a beach with a lifeguard stand and follow its flags. Our Florida safety guide has the wider picture for the beach.
How busy is the Space Coast in April? Crowds and prices
April follows March, the month our Florida guide flags for spring break crowds in the beach towns, and it closes the dry season. We found no occupancy or hotel-rate series for the Space Coast, so we rank April neither cheap nor expensive against the other eleven months.
For the same reason, we name no booking lead time in weeks. Book a refundable rate if a rocket launch is part of the plan: launch dates move, and we could not verify any for April. Flights land at Orlando International, and the rental car does the rest (getting around Florida covers tolls and driving).
We could not verify the local lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Ask for the total with taxes and any resort fee before you confirm. Our Florida cost guide lays out the daily budget tiers.
Spend extra, if anywhere, on an oceanfront room facing east. Sunrise at 6:57 a.m. comes up out of the Atlantic, and a balcony puts it in front of your morning coffee without a walk to the beach in the dark.
Things to do in the Space Coast in April

April pairs sea water at 75.0°F, up from 71.4°F in March, with an inland high of 83.6°F, down from May’s 88.4°F. A beach morning and an afternoon at the launch complex fit the same day without a retreat from the heat. The 7:52 p.m. sunset leaves light for a second swim after the museum closes.
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on Merritt Island holds the rockets and the story of the launches. Next door, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge covers marsh and lagoon for birders. Canaveral National Seashore keeps an undeveloped stretch of beach north of the cape, and Cocoa Beach, with its pier, is the busy town beach to the south. Check each operator before you drive out. Things to do in Florida ranks the wider state.
At these places, April moves the air more than the water. The airport high climbs 4.7°F from March, while the sea gains 3.6°F. The gap between the 83.6°F inland high and the 75.0°F sea stands at 8.6°F in April, against 7.5°F in March and 8.9°F in May. On the open sand of Canaveral National Seashore and in the outdoor Rocket Garden, a hat and water bottle handle an April midday.
We could not verify entry fees or free-entry days at the seashore or the refuge for April. The 6:57 a.m. sunrise from a public beach access costs nothing, and neither does the 7:52 p.m. dusk on the lagoon side.
The Space Coast in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts on the sand at Cocoa Beach for the 6:57 a.m. sunrise, with breakfast near the pier. Drive to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex for its opening (confirm the time the week you travel) and spend the warmest hours among the exhibits. Head back to the beach by mid-afternoon for a swim in 75.0°F water, and book dinner for after the 7:52 p.m. sunset.
Day two heads to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in the cool of the morning, then south to Canaveral National Seashore for a picnic and a swim on its undeveloped beach. If rain arrives, and it falls on 3.9 days in an average April at the airport, swap the days: Kennedy’s galleries sit indoors, so move the complex to the wet day and push the beach to the dry one.
The Space Coast in April vs March and May
| Normal | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high (Orlando Intl) | 78.9°F | 83.6°F | 88.4°F |
| Average low (Orlando Intl) | 55.8°F | 60.7°F | 66.3°F |
| Precipitation | 3.03 in | 2.58 in | 4.02 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.0 | 3.9 | 5.7 |
| Sea surface, daily max (Open-Meteo) | 71.4°F | 75.0°F | 79.5°F |
At Orlando International, NOAA’s normals lift the April high 4.7°F above March and leave it 4.8°F below May, with lows moving from 55.8°F to 60.7°F to 66.3°F. April carries the smallest rain total of the three at 2.58 inches, against 3.03 in March and 4.02 in May, and rain days go from 4.0 to 3.9 before jumping to 5.7. Offshore, Open-Meteo’s marine figures (2015-2024 daily maxima, a different source and period) climb from 71.4°F to 75.0°F to 79.5°F.
Moving four weeks earlier costs you 3.6°F of sea and lands you in the spring break month our Florida guide warns about, in exchange for highs near 79°F. Moving four weeks later buys water at 79.5°F and a May that the same guide counts among Florida’s quiet bargains, against 88.4°F afternoons and 1.8 more rain days.
Is April a good time to visit the Space Coast?
Yes, for couples, families and space fans who want swimmable water and a museum day without heading indoors to escape the heat: 75.0°F sea, 83.6°F inland highs and the driest month of the three. No, for anyone who wants the Atlantic warm enough to float in for an hour, or who is flying in for a specific launch we could not confirm.
Pick May if the water is the point of the trip. At 79.5°F it runs 4.5°F warmer than April, and you trade that for 88.4°F highs and 5.7 rain days at the airport, so plan beach time early and late.
Of the three months around it, April alone pairs the lowest rain total, 2.58 inches, with sea water that has reached 75.0°F.
The last word
Book April when you want the beach and the launch complex in the same comfortable day, and keep the dates refundable until a launch schedule firms up. Pack one rain shell for the downpour: an inch or more falls on 0.6 day in an average April at Orlando International, so three trips in five meet one somewhere in the month. Then set the alarm for 6:57 a.m. and take the east-facing balcony.
