FLORIDA · THE SPACE COAST IN MARCH · 28.4° N
March on the Space Coast gives you shirt-sleeve afternoons, sweater evenings and a sunset that slips past 7:30 pm once the clocks spring forward. The official NOAA station behind our normals logs an average high of 78.9°F and a low of 55.8°F, and the Atlantic’s daytime peak off the coast averages 71.4°F. That makes for beach walks at dawn, a wildlife drive before lunch and rockets on the horizon when the launch schedule obliges.
Most travelers fly into Orlando International (MCO), and that airport matters twice. It is the gateway for the drive east to Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral, and it is also where the thermometer stands. Our Florida orientation gives the Space Coast one to three nights, and March sits inside the state’s November-to-April dry season. Flight options and fares are in our Florida flights guide.

MARCH AT A GLANCE · THE SPACE COAST
March suits walkers, wildlife-watchers and launch-chasers who want mild afternoons and long evenings, while swimmers who feel the cold should look at April’s warmer sea.
DRY SEASON · 4.0 RAIN DAYS · SEA 71.4°F DAILY MAXIMA · FLY INTO MCO
Go for: refuge drives in cool mornings, beach afternoons near 79°F, sunsets after 7:30 pm and a chance at a launch over the surf.
Think twice before: planning long sea swims with small children, since the Atlantic peaks at 71.4°F in March against 75.0°F in April.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publish the 1991–2020 normals for station USW00012815, Orlando International Airport: an average March high of 78.9°F, a low of 55.8°F and 3.03 inches of precipitation. These are readings from a physical station thermometer, a firmer basis than the reanalysis grid cells many weather sites serve. Mind the location. The airport sits 60-odd km (roughly 40 miles) inland, so every figure here describes Orlando more precisely than the beach. On the coast itself, expect cooler afternoons, milder nights and a sea breeze the airport never feels.
Measurable rain, at least 0.10 inch, falls on 4.0 days in an average March, roughly one day in eight. An inch or more lands on 1.1 days, so about once a March you get a proper soaking. For a week-long vacation, that means planning on one wet day and keeping an indoor option loose enough to swap in at breakfast.
Between the 55.8°F night and the 78.9°F afternoon, the station swings 23.1°F in a day. Pack shorts and a sun hat for midday, plus a fleece or light sweater for sunrise on the sand and dinner outdoors. A windbreaker helps on the beach at dawn. Nights by the ocean run milder than the inland low, but the early refuge drive starts in the coolest part of the day.
On March 15 the sun rises at 7:32 am and sets at 7:35 pm Eastern Daylight Time (11:32 and 23:35 UTC), for about 12 hours 2 minutes of light. Clocks move forward on the second Sunday of March, so a trip in the first days of the month sees sunrise and sunset roughly an hour earlier by the clock. Plan the beach’s golden light for the last hour before 7:35 pm.
Can you swim in the Space Coast in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea surface off the Space Coast at 71.4°F (21.9°C) in March, averaged over 2015–2024. That number is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Early-morning water sits a little below it.
At 71.4°F, the first minute in the Atlantic feels brisk, and confident swimmers settle in after that. Children and anyone who chills easily tend to stay in longer in April, when the same source gives 75.0°F. An inland afternoon high of 78.9°F puts the air only 7.5°F above the water, and a breeze on wet skin narrows that comfort further, so keep a towel and a dry layer within reach.
Our sources carry no March wind or swell series for this coast, so we give no wave heights. Read the National Weather Service marine forecast on the morning you swim, obey any posted flags, and choose a guarded beach where one is staffed. Rip currents and beach safety are covered in our Florida safety guide.
How busy is the Space Coast in March? Crowds and prices
March falls inside Florida’s dry season, and our Florida orientation names spring break among the state’s annual price peaks. We found no room-rate or occupancy series for Brevard County, so we rank no week of March above another and put no dollar figure on the difference.
We have no booking-window data to turn into a count of weeks. Compare your dates against the school spring-break calendars of the states you’d expect to see on the beach, book a refundable rate, and if a launch is part of the plan, hold the room early and keep it cancellable, because launch dates slip. Budget lines for the whole trip are in what a Florida trip costs.
We could not verify Brevard County’s tourist development tax rate, so we give no percentage. Expect it as a separate line on your hotel quote, often next to a resort or parking fee, and ask for the all-in nightly total before you book.
Location is the spend that changes a March stay. A room on the barrier island, at Cocoa Beach or Cape Canaveral, puts you in the sea breeze and the milder nights the inland station misses, with the 7:32 am sunrise a short walk away. Neighborhoods and bases are compared in where to stay in Florida.
Things to do in the Space Coast in March

Afternoons near 79°F let you stack a wildlife drive, a beach walk and a rocket museum into one day without the 83.6°F April peak. Add a sunset after 7:30 pm and the outdoor day runs long enough to finish on the sand.
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on Merritt Island holds the rocket garden and the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit. Next door, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge has the Black Point Wildlife Drive through its marshes. North of it, Canaveral National Seashore keeps Playalinda Beach undeveloped, and the Cocoa Beach Pier reaches out over the surf farther south. We could not verify March ticket prices or opening hours for any of them, so we quote none. Check each operator before you go, and see things to do in Florida and Florida’s national parks for more.
The ocean barely moves across a March day while the air travels from 55.8°F to 78.9°F inland. The Atlantic’s 71.4°F daytime peak sits 15.6°F above the night low and 7.5°F below the afternoon high. That gap decides the order of things: marsh and wildlife drive in the cool morning, museum halls through midday, water in the warm afternoon.
We could not verify entry fees at the refuge or the seashore for March. Two things cost nothing: the 7:32 am sunrise from a Cocoa Beach access point, and a launch watched from the shore when one is on the schedule. We list no launch dates, because none were confirmed for March when we checked.
The Space Coast in March: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Be on the sand at Cocoa Beach by 7:15 am for the 7:32 sunrise, fleece on. After breakfast, drive the Black Point Wildlife Drive at Merritt Island while the air is still cool. From late morning, spend the warmest hours inside the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Around 5 pm, walk the Cocoa Beach Pier, then stay on the beach for the 7:35 pm sunset and eat dinner close by.
Day two. Head north to Playalinda Beach in Canaveral National Seashore for a long morning walk, then swim in early afternoon, when the water reaches its 71.4°F daily peak. With 4.0 rain days in an average March, keep the Visitor Complex as the wet-day swap: if showers arrive, move it here and put the refuge drive on the drier morning. Stretching the trip across the state? Our 7-day Florida itinerary links the coast to the rest.
The Space Coast in March vs February and April
| Normal | February | March | April |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high (Orlando Intl) | 74.9°F | 78.9°F | 83.6°F |
| Average low (Orlando Intl) | 52.4°F | 55.8°F | 60.7°F |
| Precipitation | 2.04 in | 3.03 in | 2.58 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.8 | 4.0 | 3.9 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima (Open-Meteo Marine, 2015–2024) | 67.8°F | 71.4°F | 75.0°F |
From February to March, the NOAA normals at Orlando International climb 4.0°F on the high and 3.4°F on the low. April adds another 4.7°F and 4.9°F. Wet days barely move, at 3.8, 4.0 and 3.9. The sea, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024 and a different period from the air normals, rises 3.6°F each step: 67.8°F, 71.4°F, 75.0°F.
Moving four weeks earlier gains a drier month, 2.04 inches against 3.03, and costs you 3.6°F of sea, dropping it below 70°F. Moving four weeks later buys a 75.0°F Atlantic and nights above 60°F, at the price of 83.6°F afternoons inland. Pick February for cool-weather walking, April for swimming.
Is March a good time to visit the Space Coast?
Yes, for travelers who came for the refuge, the space center, beach walks and a possible launch: the afternoons stay under 80°F at the station and the evenings run past 7:30 pm. Families counting on long swims with young children, or anyone who wants bathwater, will find 71.4°F on the cool side.
For them, April is the month to book. Its 75.0°F sea and 60.7°F nights make lingering in the water easier, and its 3.9 rain days match March almost exactly.
Among February, March and April, only March puts the sea above 70°F while inland afternoons stay below 80°F.
The last word
Choose your base first: a barrier-island room gives you the sunrise, the sea breeze and the softer nights, and the rest of a March trip falls into place around it. Pack for one wet afternoon and pack for a heavy one. March’s 3.03 inches fall on about as many days as February’s 2.04 and April’s 2.58, so the month’s showers come in bigger bursts. When the sky clears, the beach at 7:35 pm is yours.
