The Space Coast in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

May on the Space Coast is the month the Atlantic catches up with the air. The sea off this stretch of coast averages 79.5°F at its daily peak, the sun stays up past eight in the evening, and rain days are still half as frequent as they will be in June. A beach trip built around morning swims and a day at Kennedy Space Center fits this calendar well.

The cost is heat, measured by a thermometer that sits inland. Orlando International, the station behind our normals, averages 88.4°F by afternoon in May, and the coast itself runs a little cooler by day. Four weeks earlier, April is drier and milder, and our Space Coast in April guide makes that case in full.

The Space Coast weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days

May normal (Orlando International, 1991–2020) Value
Average high 88.4°F
Average low 66.3°F
Precipitation 4.02 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 5.7
Days with 1 in or more 1.4
Daylight on May 15 13 h 38 min

Our air figures are the 1991–2020 normals published by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information for station USW00012815, the official thermometer at Orlando International Airport. That is a real station reading, not a grid-cell reanalysis, but it stands 60-odd km (roughly 40 miles) inland. May there averages a high of 88.4°F and a low of 66.3°F, with 4.02 inches of rain. On the coast, count on afternoons somewhat cooler and nights somewhat milder than those numbers.

An average May brings 5.7 days with at least a tenth of an inch of rain, so a wet day turns up a little less than once in five. Only 1.4 days reach an inch or more. On a week-long vacation, expect one or two damp stretches and, most years, no full washout. Keep one indoor plan ready for every two or three beach days.

From the 66.3°F low to the 88.4°F high, the inland swing runs 22.1°F. Pack a light long-sleeved layer for the first hour after sunrise and for air-conditioned interiors, then breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of sunscreen for the hours in between.

On May 15 the sun rises at 6:33 a.m. and sets at 8:10 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, for about 13 hours 38 minutes of daylight. Dusk falls after most dinner reservations, and a swim at seven still has more than an hour of sun left.

Can you swim in the Space Coast in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off the Space Coast at 79.5°F in May, averaged over 2015–2024. That number is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above what a round-the-clock average would show. Model and years both differ from the NOAA air normals, and we keep the two sources apart for that reason.

For a swimmer, that means water close to 80°F by afternoon and a touch cooler at the first dip after sunrise. Most people wade straight in at that reading, and April’s 75.0°F feels brisk by comparison. A rash guard for sun protection serves better than a wetsuit.

We found no wind or swell series for May, so we cannot say how often the surf runs flat or rough. Check the local surf report on the morning you go, swim near a lifeguard where one is posted, and read our Florida safety guide for beach precautions before the trip.

How busy is the Space Coast in May? Crowds and prices

May falls between two markers on the Florida calendar: the March spring-break rush that our Florida trip-cost guide names among the annual peaks, and the opening of hurricane season on June 1, as our Florida overview notes. We found no occupancy or room-rate series for the Space Coast, so we rank no month as cheapest.

Without lead-time data, we give no week count for booking. Orlando International (MCO) is the usual airport for the coast, and our flights guide compares routes and fares. For dates close to June 1, choose a refundable room and a flexible fare so a tropical forecast costs you a rebooking, not a trip.

We could not verify the local lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Ask for the nightly total with tax and any resort fee before you commit. Our trip-cost guide flags resort fees and parking as the charges that quietly inflate beachfront bills.

Spend the extra on a room within walking distance of the sand. The coast runs cooler by day than the inland 88.4°F normal, and a beach you can reach on foot turns the hottest hour into a swim break, with no car, lot or parking meter involved.

Things to do in the Space Coast in May

May pairs a sea near 80°F with rain on only 5.7 days, a combination neither neighbor matches: April’s water sits at 75.0°F, and June’s rain days climb to 11.5. Long swims, early beach walks and full evenings outdoors form the core of a May trip.

Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach are the two names our Florida overview gives for this coast. Check the visitor complex’s own site the week you travel for current ticket prices, opening hours, and parking. For more options across the state, see things to do in Florida.

At 79.5°F in May, the Atlantic sits 4.5°F above April and 3.6°F below June, while the inland afternoon high climbs from April’s 83.6°F to 88.4°F. Put Kennedy Space Center’s indoor exhibits in the hottest hours and keep the beach for the two ends of the day.

The ocean charges no admission, and the mid-May daylight gives you close to 14 hours of it. We could not verify beach parking fees, so carry a card and some small bills for public lots.

The Space Coast in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts on the sand for the 6:33 a.m. sunrise, with a swim before nine while the air is still close to its overnight low. Drive to Kennedy Space Center by late morning and stay under a roof through the hottest stretch; confirm its hours before you set out, since we could not verify them. Head back to the beach around five, and use the light until the 8:10 p.m. sunset for a last swim and an early dinner.

For the second morning, slow the pace: a sunrise walk, a long swim, lunch in the shade and an afternoon siesta. If a storm rolls in, remember that only 1.4 days in an average May bring an inch or more of rain, so swap the beach for an indoor stop and return to the water once the sky clears. Two nights cover this plan, and a third gives you a spare day for weather.

The Space Coast in May vs April and June

Normal April May June
Average high (NOAA) 83.6°F 88.4°F 90.8°F
Average low (NOAA) 60.7°F 66.3°F 71.6°F
Precipitation (NOAA) 2.58 in 4.02 in 8.05 in
Days with 0.10 in+ (NOAA) 3.9 5.7 11.5
Sea surface, daily max (Open-Meteo) 75.0°F 79.5°F 83.1°F

NOAA’s Orlando International normals climb steadily across the three months: highs of 83.6°F, 88.4°F and 90.8°F, lows of 60.7°F, 66.3°F and 71.6°F. Rain rises from 2.58 inches in April to 4.02 in May, then doubles to 8.05 in June, and rain days follow the same curve at 3.9, 5.7 and 11.5. Open-Meteo’s marine averages put the sea at 75.0°F, 79.5°F and 83.1°F.

Shifting to April trades 4.5°F of sea temperature for 1.8 fewer rain days and nights 5.6°F cooler. June runs in the opposite direction: water 3.6°F warmer and afternoons 2.4°F hotter, with rain days doubling and hurricane season open from June 1.

Is May a good time to visit the Space Coast?

Yes, for a beach vacation. In May the water sits near 80°F and rain falls on fewer than one day in five. Travelers who flag above the mid-80s should hesitate, since the inland high averages 88.4°F, and so should anyone planning long exposed walks at midday.

If heat is the deal-breaker, pick April: a high of 83.6°F, a low of 60.7°F and 3.9 rain days, with the sea at 75.0°F, brisk for some swimmers. The Space Coast in April covers that month in detail.

Of the three months we compared, May alone pairs a sea above 79°F with fewer than six rain days.

The last word

The sea breeze never reaches Orlando International, the station behind every normal here, and it does reach the coast. That breeze, together with a shore that runs cooler by day, separates a May afternoon on the sand from the 88.4°F an inland reading suggests. Book a room you can walk to the water from, give the midday hours to air-conditioned exhibits, and be back on the beach for the 8:10 p.m. sunset.
