FLORIDA · OCTOBER · SILVER GLEN SPRINGS
October takes 6.0°F off the September afternoon at Silver Glen Springs. The 1991-2020 normals put the month at an average high of 82.1°F against September’s 88.1°F, and rain drops from 5.05 inches to 2.68. The spring keeps its own accounting: a USGS gauge on the vent read 87 cubic feet per second on September 11, 2026.
A spring with no season under air that has four: that gap is the reason to put a date on this trip at all. Plan on a car and a full day, since we found no transit service to the spring in our sources. For the statewide dry and wet seasons, our Florida best-time guide does that work. The month before runs the same numbers on the September page.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SILVER GLEN SPRINGS · OCTOBER
October hands you September’s swim without September’s 88.1°F afternoons or its 5.05 inches of rain, and the only figure that never moves is the one leaving the vent.
AVG HIGH 82.1°F · 4.0 WET DAYS · 11H 30M OF DAYLIGHT ON OCT 15
Go for: a swim day with the 88.1°F September afternoons behind you, 60.6°F dawns, and measurable rain on about one day in eight.
Think twice before: driving out without calling first. We could not verify an entrance fee or an opening hour for the spring, and a price published for another Florida park does not transfer.

Every figure here comes from the NOAA NCEI monthly normals for 1991-2020, measured at Gainesville Regional Airport, station USW00012816, about 78 km from the spring, roughly 48 miles. That matters twice over. It is a real thermometer rather than a grid-cell reanalysis, and it describes the air only. October averages a high of 82.1°F, a low of 60.6°F and 2.68 inches of rain across the month.
Four days in an average October collect at least 0.10 inch. Across 31 days that works out to roughly one day in eight, and the other twenty-seven are dry enough to leave a towel on the roof of the car. A wet day at a spring rarely costs the day: it costs an hour under cover before you get back in the water. Put a dry change of clothes in a sealed bag and keep the phone somewhere that does not mind a shower.
Subtract the low from the high and October leaves 21.5°F between the coldest hour and the warmest, wider than September’s 18.7°F. So the bag holds two wardrobes: fleece and long pants for a 60.6°F start, shorts and a swimsuit for the middle of the day. Add a second towel. One is never enough once two people have swum.
On October 15 the sun clears the horizon at 7:27 a.m. and sets at 6:57 p.m. local time, 11 hours 30 minutes of daylight by the sunrise-sunset.org calculation. Work the day backward from that sunset. An hour of driving at each end still leaves a long visit, while a 5 p.m. arrival buys under two hours, most of it in flattening light.
How warm is Silver Glen Springs in October?
Silver Glen’s swim temperature does not appear in our sources, so we publish none. The air answer is settled at 82.1°F for the warmest hour and 60.6°F for the coldest, 21.5°F apart. Water temperatures published by the month, for coasts and springs alike, are normally averages of daily maxima, a touch warmer than a true 24-hour mean. We hold neither for this spring run, so no number goes in the swim column.
At 7:27 a.m. the air sits near its 60.6°F low, so the first hour of an October visit is a fleece hour, and a wet swimsuit at that temperature is a mistake you make once. By early afternoon the normals have climbed 21.5°F and shorts do the job. Pack for both ends of that run in the same small bag, plus footwear you do not mind soaking.
Freezing nights do not live inside an October average low of 60.6°F, and the normals we read carry no count of nights at or below 32°F. We found no daily-extremes series for the station either, so we give no frost frequency. November’s average low of 50.6°F is the direction the calendar is walking.
How busy is Silver Glen Springs in October? Crowds, fees and booking ahead
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for this corner of Florida, so we crown no month expensive and none cheapest. What the calendar says is simple enough: October falls after the summer school break and ahead of the winter arrivals that fill the peninsula. The statewide shape of that year sits in our best-time guide, with the dry season starting in November.
Booking ahead here is not about rooms at the spring, since our sources list none. It is about the bed you drive from and the rental car that gets you there, both of which our where-to-stay guide and flights guide handle for the state. Hold the car early for a fall weekend and keep the lodging refundable if you are traveling in the first half of the month.
We could not verify a county lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Fuel and a cooler are the rest of a spring day’s budget, and we could not price either from our sources. Our trip-cost guide prices a Florida day in three tiers, which is the closest honest answer we can put next to this month.
Paying for the night before is the one upgrade that changes an October day at this spring. A bed within a short drive turns that 7:27 a.m. sunrise into an arrival at first light rather than a mid-morning one, with the coolest air and the emptiest water going to whoever gets there first. We could not verify how many parking spaces the recreation area holds, so treat the early start as insurance.
Things to do in Silver Glen Springs in October

October allows a whole day outdoors at the spring without September’s 88.1°F afternoons. Rain days drop from 6.9 to 4.0 and the monthly total falls by 2.37 inches. Since the water itself is unchanged, what the month hands over is everything around the swim: the walk in, the picnic, the two hours between one dip and the next.
The vent is the attraction and it is measurable. A USGS gauge, station 02236160, read 87 cubic feet per second leaving it on September 11, 2026. That volume is why the water is clear: it is replaced faster than it can cloud. Florida Statutes 373.802(5) defines Outstanding Florida Springs as every historic first-magnitude spring the Florida Geological Survey recognizes, plus six named by hand in the law. We read the definition and not the list, so we make no claim about which line Silver Glen falls on.
Between September and November the average high at the station swings 13.4°F, from 88.1°F down to 74.7°F, and October’s 82.1°F sits close to the middle of that fall. The swim is identical in all three months. The ten minutes after you climb out are not, and that is the entire seasonal difference at a spring.
We could not verify an entrance fee, an opening hour or a manatee count for Silver Glen. The state parks site refused our automated reads and the state wildlife agency renders its manatee page in the browser, so we name none of the three. Fees differ by park and by season, so a figure you find for another spring does not carry over. Call before you drive. Our manatee guide takes the winter question, and Things to Do in Florida covers the rest.
Silver Glen Springs in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one: be at the water by 8 a.m., half an hour after the 7:27 sunrise, with the air still near 60.6°F and a fleece on. Swim from late morning as the normals climb toward 82.1°F. Eat in the shade through the hottest hour, take a second swim around 4 p.m., and start loading the car at 6 p.m. The light is gone by 6:57.
Day two gives the morning to the run below the vent and the afternoon to the road. St. Augustine and the Everglades sit at opposite ends of that decision, with driving times in our getting-around guide. If the sky closes, remember the odds: 4.0 days in the month record 0.10 inch or more. Wait it out in the car, then go back in. Rain changes nothing about the water you are swimming in.
Silver Glen Springs in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 88.1°F | 82.1°F | 74.7°F |
| Average low | 69.4°F | 60.6°F | 50.6°F |
| Precipitation | 5.05 in | 2.68 in | 1.79 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 6.9 | 4.0 | 3.0 |
| Day-night spread | 18.7°F | 21.5°F | 24.1°F |
| Spring water | not verified | not verified | not verified |
The three months descend like a staircase at the Gainesville station: 88.1°F, 82.1°F and 74.7°F by day, 69.4°F, 60.6°F and 50.6°F by night. Rain follows the same slope at 5.05, 2.68 and 1.79 inches, and wet days go 6.9, 4.0, 3.0. No column above carries an estimate. All three months come from the same NOAA normals, the same station and the same 1991-2020 period. The water row stays empty in all three for the same reason it stays empty everywhere else here.
Shift four weeks later and you gain the driest of the three months, 1.79 inches over 3.0 wet days, and you lose 7.4°F of afternoon and 10.0°F of night. A 50.6°F November dawn beside a spring is a different proposition. Shift four weeks earlier and September gives back 6.0°F of warmth for 2.37 inches more rain and nearly three extra wet days. The September page has that month in full.
Is October a good time to visit Silver Glen Springs?
Yes for swimmers who would rather not stand in an 88.1°F afternoon, and yes for anyone driving in and out the same day, since 11 hours 30 minutes of daylight still covers the round trip with room to spare. No for anyone who needs certainty about access before leaving home: we could not verify hours or a fee, and a phone call is the only fix we can offer.
If the answer lands on no, take November instead. It is the driest of the three months at 1.79 inches and 3.0 wet days, and it buys that calm at the price of a 50.6°F sunrise and a 74.7°F ceiling. Anyone who wants the air to feel like the water should go earlier rather than later, and accept September’s rain as the fee.
Nothing else in the trio pairs an 82.1°F afternoon with a 2.68-inch month: September brings the warmth and almost double the rain, November the dry air and 7.4°F less of it.
The last word
Decide this one by the drive, not by the forecast. An inch of rain or more falls on 0.7 day in an average October, so seven Octobers in ten see one such afternoon, and a single soaking changes nothing about water that was leaving the vent at 87 cubic feet per second when the gauge was read. Call ahead for the gate hour, pack the dry shirt in a sealed bag, and point the car at that 7:27 a.m. sunrise.
