Alaska in June: Midnight Sun, Weather by Region and What to Do

On June 21 in Fairbanks, a baseball game begins in the evening and carries on into the twilight around midnight, a tradition the town has kept up for more than a century. That is June in Alaska: the days stretch long, the trails and roads are open, and the whole state seems to be outdoors. The month suits travelers who want long days on glaciers, in the Interior and along the coast, from the Kenai Peninsula to the Arctic shore.

What is the weather like in Alaska in June?

June is cool on the coast, warm in the Interior and still near freezing on the Arctic shore, and the wetness depends on which side of the mountains you stand. Fairbanks gets the warmest afternoons of the six places below, Ketchikan the most rain, and Utqiagvik the only daylight that never ends.

Place Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Daylight on the 15th
Anchorage 63.4 48.4 1.02 19 h 16 min
Fairbanks 71.8 50.2 1.48 21 h 37 min
Juneau 62.4 46.8 3.82 18 h 14 min
Ketchikan 61.3 49.3 7.02 17 h 25 min
Seward 59.0 45.7 2.34 18 h 51 min
Utqiagvik 40.9 31.1 0.43 24 h (midnight sun)

Southeast is the wet corner. Ketchikan sees rain on more than ten days of the month, and Juneau on close to nine, so showers there are part of the plan rather than an exception. Anchorage and Fairbanks have far fewer wet days, three or four in an average June, and Utqiagvik barely one or two. No snow falls at the Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau airports in June, but a little still falls at Utqiagvik.

The Interior has the warmest afternoons and the longest evenings of the road-accessible towns, with Fairbanks well ahead of Anchorage on both counts. Seward, tucked against the water, has the coolest afternoons of the group apart from the Arctic. At Utqiagvik, the northernmost city in the United States, June means jacket weather with the sun above the horizon around the clock.

Where to go in Alaska in June

Southcentral and the Kenai coast

Anchorage is the usual gateway, a city surrounded by wilderness where moose wander through neighborhoods and mountain trails stay light late into the evening. You can hike under the midnight sun here in the loose sense that the evenings stretch very long, though the sun does set. The city’s museums trace Russian, Native, gold rush and pioneer history, and they make a good way to understand what you will see farther out.

Seward lies at the head of Resurrection Bay, with Mt. Marathon rising steeply behind town and Kenai Fjords National Park out on the water. The Alaska SeaLife Center, the state’s only public aquarium, is the rainy-hour stop, while the boat harbor is where day cruises head out for whales, puffins and otters. The Coastal Classic train runs daily between Anchorage, Girdwood and Seward in 2027 from May 14 to September 12, and the Seward Highway is the road alternative.

The Interior: Fairbanks and Denali

Fairbanks is the June town for people who want long, warm days. The evening light stretches past any sensible bedtime, and the Midnight Sun Game around June 21 gives the whole community a reason to stay outside. The Interior is also the drier side of the state, with only a few rainy days in an average June.

Denali National Park lies between Fairbanks and Anchorage, with its only road entrance on the George Parks Highway. Bus service on the Denali Park Road generally runs from May 20 through mid-September, so June falls inside it.

Private vehicles may drive only the first stretch, to Savage River, and the road is closed farther out at Mile 43 because of the Pretty Rocks landslide. The free Savage River Shuttle, the Riley Creek Loop Shuttle and the Sled Dog Demonstration Shuttle serve the entrance area. On a clear day the mountain itself may show, though clouds often keep it hidden.

Denali Open
Denali National Park Open year-round
Park bus service Generally May 20 through mid-September
Sled dog demonstrations June 1 through early September, at 10 am, 2 pm and 4 pm
Discovery Hikes From mid-June, one hike each day

Southeast and the Inside Passage

Juneau, the state capital, cannot be reached by road, only by air or sea, and it sits in the Tongass National Forest, a temperate rainforest. Mendenhall Glacier is near the airport and reachable by car, and downtown holds the Alaskan Brewery’s hometown pubs and The Alaskan, a hotel and bar more than a century old. The Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples share their cultures here, and the town’s original Tlingit name, Dzantik’i Héeni, recalls an old fishing ground.

Rain gear matters more here than anywhere else in this list. Ketchikan and Juneau have the wettest Junes of the six places, and the cruise ships that call in Southeast, among them Norwegian’s calls at Skagway, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka and Ketchikan, arrive regardless. The Alaska Marine Highway publishes its ferry schedules in a monthly Sailing Calendar, with a Sailing Search for a given port and date.

The Arctic: Utqiagvik

Utqiagvik is a different June entirely. Polar day lasts a long stretch here, so the sun stays above the horizon day and night, and the air stays cold, close to freezing overnight. A few flakes can still fall. The town suits travelers who want the far edge of the continent and a light that does not end, not a hiking holiday in warm weather.

What to do in Alaska in June

The Midnight Sun Game and the long evenings

The Midnight Sun Game in Fairbanks has been played since 1906 around the twilight of June 21, and it is the month’s signature event. Fans fill the bleachers late in the evening for a ballgame that begins when most towns are finishing dinner. Anchorage offers festivals, concerts, live music, marathons and cultural celebrations through the summer, and the city’s visitor newsletter lists what is on.

Denali: sled dogs and Discovery Hikes

At Denali, rangers and their Alaskan huskies give half-hour sled dog demonstrations that include a visit to the park kennels, three times a day from June 1. Discovery Hikes begin in mid-June, one a day through late summer. You sign up in person at the Denali Visitor Center one or two days ahead, and the hikes require registration and likely a bus ticket.

Whales, puffins, salmon and bears

Day cruises out of Anchorage’s region and Seward look for whales, puffins and otters, and Juneau visitors may see bears, bald eagles or humpback whales, especially from April through November. Humpbacks are known for breaching, and orcas are found in the waters off Alaska.

Salmon fill rivers and streams near Anchorage all summer, and flights from the city go out to see bears fishing. Katmai holds spawning grounds for Bristol Bay sockeye, and Crescent Lake in the Chigmit Mountains has strong salmon runs and high bear numbers. These are chances, never promises.

No aurora, but light at every hour

The northern lights season in Anchorage runs from the middle of August through April, so June is not the month for them. What June offers instead is daylight, enough to stay out for a late hike, a flightseeing tour over the mountains or a long dinner on the water. Flightseeing tours depart from Anchorage throughout the year.

Is Alaska busy in June?

Yes, in the places where ships, trains and parks overlap. Juneau gets a daily wave of cruise passengers between May and September, so June days downtown fill with visitors from the ships. Royal Caribbean’s seven-night Alaska Adventure sails round trip from Seattle from June through August to Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier, and Holland America and Norwegian also run Alaska cruises that depart from ports such as Seattle, Vancouver and Seward.

Denali sees its main season from late May to early September, and most organized events there fall between mid-May and mid-September. Seward and the Coastal Classic corridor, with trains running daily, belong to the same summer rhythm. Anchorage is the central hub of the season, with the main airport hub of the region. Utqiagvik, far from this circuit, is a separate trip.

What to pack for Alaska in June

Packing changes with the region. The Interior can feel like early summer, the coast stays cool and wet, and Utqiagvik needs warm layers. The long daylight changes the plan too.

  • A waterproof jacket, because Ketchikan and Juneau see rain on many days of the month.
  • Warm layers such as a fleece, for cool coastal boat decks and Seward’s cooler afternoons.
  • A warm hat and gloves for Utqiagvik, where the air stays near freezing at night.
  • An eye mask or blackout sleep mask, since daylight lasts nearly all night in much of the state.
  • Sturdy walking shoes for trails near Anchorage, Denali and Mendenhall Glacier.

Good to know before you go

Denali’s park bus service generally runs from May 20 through mid-September, and the Park Road is closed at Mile 43 by the Pretty Rocks landslide. The Coastal Classic train runs daily in 2027 from May 14 to September 12.

In Denali, cell coverage exists only within three miles of the entrance, and the emergency number is 9-1-1. The daylight is long everywhere, and at Utqiagvik it does not end. Juneau cannot be reached by road, so plan to arrive by air or sea.

Is June a good time to visit Alaska?

Yes, and the Interior around Fairbanks and Denali is the strongest choice this month, with the warmest days, the longest evenings and the fewest wet days of the road-accessible towns. Anchorage and the Kenai coast follow closely, and Southeast suits you if rain does not bother you.

Compared with May, Anchorage and Fairbanks are noticeably warmer in June, and the services that start up around late May are fully running. July is warmer still, with Anchorage a few degrees higher and wetter, and Juneau’s rain increases as well. June sits in between, with the lightest evenings, the Midnight Sun Game and, at Denali, sled dog demonstrations and the first Discovery Hikes.
