Playa del Carmen began in 1937 as a small fishing settlement. The 2020 census counted 304,942 residents, which makes it Quintana Roo’s second-largest city after Cancun. In July the average afternoon reaches 93.2°F, and the Caribbean in front of town sits at 85.9°F, warm enough to walk straight in.

Among June, July and August, July is the month with the least rain: 3.84 inches, against 6.84 in June and 5.37 in August. The price is a heat that barely lets go overnight (the average low is 71.6°F) and a place inside the hurricane calendar. July falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center puts most of the activity between mid-August and mid-October. July sits early in that window, so the season shapes how you book more than what you pack.

Playa del Carmen weather in July: average highs, lows and rain days

Every air figure here comes from Mexico’s national weather service, the SMN, using its 1991-2020 normals for station 23014 at Leona Vicario, near Puerto Morelos and about 25 miles north of town. Playa itself is not separately measured. That makes the station the nearest official reading of this stretch of coast, not a thermometer on the beach. An average July afternoon peaks at 93.2°F, the average low is 71.6°F, and the month collects 3.84 inches of rain.

The SMN counts 6.5 days of measurable rain in an average July, roughly one day in five. Its station sheet does not publish the threshold behind that count, so we can’t say how small a shower qualifies. A week in town meets a day or two of counted rain on average, which leaves most mornings free for the beach.

The average high sits 21.6 degrees above the average low. That gap looks wide on paper, but the floor is 71.6°F, so the sweater is the one thing to leave at home. The bag needs sun protection for a 93.2°F peak and a light rain jacket for the counted days.

On July 15 the day runs about 13 hours 18 minutes. The sun rises at 6:15 a.m. and sets at 7:33 p.m. Cancun time (the source gives 11:15 and 00:33 UTC). Beach mornings start early, and dinner on Quinta Avenida comes after dark.

Can you swim in Playa del Carmen in July? Sea temperature

The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea surface off Playa del Carmen at 85.9°F in July, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maximum readings, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would.

At 85.9°F you walk in without the gasp, and nothing about the temperature argues for staying on the sand. Because the reading is a daily maximum, the afternoon is the best guide for a midday swim, and the first hour after sunrise may feel a touch cooler.

We found no July wind or swell series for this coast, so we can’t say how choppy the water runs. Check the local sea report the morning you cross to Cozumel or snorkel, and look at the National Hurricane Center’s outlook before you fly.

How busy is Playa del Carmen in July? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no month-by-month room-rate data for Playa del Carmen, so we crown no month expensive or cheap. The only calendar marker we can source is the hurricane window that July sits in. To judge the cost of your dates, price the same room for July and for a date after November 30 before you commit.

We also found no dated data on how many weeks ahead July fills, so we give no lead time. Two things you can price today: flights into Cancun International (CUN), about 68 kilometers from town, or Tulum International, open since December 2023 and to the south. Quintana Roo charges foreign tourists a mandatory environmental sanitation fee, the Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental, known as Visitax, under Article 51 Octies of the state’s Law of Rights. You pay it online at visitax.gob.mx or through authorized companies. We could not confirm the current peso amount on the portal, so we give none. We could not verify a lodging-tax rate either, so no percentage appears.

The one line where paying more changes the month is a changeable booking: a refundable rate on the room and a fare you can rebook. A storm near your dates is the risk that money can cover before it happens. Ultramar’s Cozumel tickets stay valid for six months from purchase, so that crossing already carries some slack.

Things to do in Playa del Carmen in July

July suits water days. The sea sits at 85.9°F, the sun is up from 6:15 a.m., and the air peaks at 93.2°F, so a swim, a reef and a cenote are the obvious answers to the heat. The Cozumel crossing is the classic. Ultramar’s ferry leaves from the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA on Avenida Benito Juarez, and passengers must be there 30 minutes before departure. Xcaret Xpress sails the same route. We give no fare or crossing time for either, since we could not read a current one.

Parque Xcaret, on the coast south of town, is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. It advertises more than 50 natural and cultural attractions, among them underground rivers, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion and a coral reef aquarium. Its evening show, Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, features more than 300 performers. Cenotes are the independent alternative: Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote lie closer to Tulum, with smaller sites toward Puerto Morelos, each running its own posted price.

We have no water temperature for the cenotes, so we can’t compare them with the 85.9°F sea. The variable we can measure is the air: 93.2°F at the peak against 71.6°F at the low. Xcaret’s hours help with that, since the park stays open almost three hours past the 7:33 p.m. sunset, and the hottest stretch of the afternoon can go to the shaded and water attractions.

Quinta Avenida, the downtown spine, is a pedestrian thoroughfare of shops, clubs and restaurants that runs parallel to the beach, and it costs nothing to walk. We could not verify which beach accesses are free, so we list none. The U.S. State Department’s advisory dated May 29, 2026 puts Quintana Roo at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution.” It advises well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones after dark, which describes Quinta Avenida. It also lists Playa del Carmen among the cities with Tourist Assistance Modules.

Playa del Carmen itinerary for July

Day one, Xcaret. Sunrise is at 6:15 a.m., so start with a walk on the beach and coffee while the air is still short of its 93.2°F peak. Be at the gate for 8:30 a.m. and take the underground rivers, the aviary and the reef aquarium first. Stay through the 7:33 p.m. sunset for Xcaret Mexico Espectacular. We don’t have the show’s start time, so check the park’s schedule. The park closes at 10:30 p.m.

Day two, Cozumel. Be at the NAVEGA terminal 30 minutes before a morning departure (confirm times with Ultramar), spend the day on the island, and come back for dinner on Quinta Avenida after the sun goes down. If rain sets in, flip the days. Xcaret’s 50-plus attractions and 10:30 p.m. closing give a wet afternoon somewhere to go, while the ferry day wants clear water.

Playa del Carmen in July vs June and August

Highs climb through the summer: 92.5°F in June, 93.2°F in July and 93.6°F in August. Lows barely move, at 71.6°F, 71.6°F and 71.2°F. Rain separates the three months. June collects 6.84 inches over 7.3 rain days, July 3.84 inches over 6.5 days, and August 5.37 inches over 8.5 days. The sea reads 86.0°F, 85.9°F and 87.1°F.

Moving four weeks earlier gets you nearly the same air and the same 71.6°F nights, but a wetter month and a sea at 86.0°F. Moving four weeks later adds heat at 93.6°F, two more rain days than July and a sea at 87.1°F, and it lands closer to the mid-August start of the busiest hurricane stretch. Is July a good time to visit Playa del Carmen?

Yes, for a swim, reef and cenote vacation with a booking you can change. No, for anyone who wants air cooler than a 93.2°F peak, or dates that can’t move if a storm forms near them.

If the storm calendar is the problem, look past November 30, when the season ends. We have not read those months’ normals, so we rank none. Start from Where to Go by month. If heat is the problem, June through August won’t fix it: highs run from 92.5°F to 93.6°F across all three.

Among June, July and August, only July pairs the lowest rainfall, 3.84 inches, with a sea that still reads 85.9°F and 13 hours 18 minutes of daylight.

Book a room and a fare you can change, then open the National Hurricane Center’s outlook the week you fly to Cancun or Tulum. Hurricane Wilma struck this coast in October 2005 and stayed about two days. July sits ahead of the mid-August to mid-October stretch when most activity comes. The plan itself is short: sunrise on the beach at 6:15 a.m., Xcaret’s gate at 8:30 a.m., and a table on Quinta Avenida after the 7:33 p.m. sunset.
