Cancun International Airport (CUN), operated by ASUR, lies about 68 kilometers from town. Tulum International Airport, open since December 2023, serves the southern Riviera Maya. Playa del Carmen itself began in 1937 as a fishing settlement and counted 304,942 residents in the 2020 census, which makes it the second-largest city in Quintana Roo after Cancun.

Every figure here comes from Mexico’s national weather service, the Servicio Meteorologico Nacional, and its 1991-2020 normals for station 23014 at Leona Vicario, near Puerto Morelos and about 25 miles north of town. Playa is not separately measured, so these numbers describe the coast’s climate at large. An average June day peaks at 92.5°F and drops to 71.6°F overnight, with 6.84 inches of precipitation over the month.
The service counts 7.3 days of measurable rain in an average June and does not publish the threshold behind “measurable.” That works out to roughly one day in four. Keep one water-based or covered item on every itinerary and leave the remaining days loose for the beach.

At 86.0°F the water sits 14.4 degrees above the average June night air of 71.6°F, so an evening swim feels warmer than the air around it. May’s sea, at 84.4°F, is 1.6 degrees cooler.
We found no wind or swell series for this coast, so we give no wave heights and no figures on seaweed or currents. Because hurricane season opens on June 1, check the National Hurricane Center’s forecasts before you fly and again before any boat day.
How busy is Playa del Carmen in June? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate data for Playa del Carmen, so we crown no month the cheapest or the busiest. The calendar does fix one thing. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so June opens that stretch.

Quintana Roo charges foreign tourists a mandatory environmental sanitation fee, the Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental, known as Visitax, under Article 51 Octies of the state’s Law of Rights. It is payable online at visitax.gob.mx or through authorized companies. We could not confirm the current peso amount on the portal, so we give none.
Xcaret prices its tickets dynamically, so the figure you see depends on when you look. We could not read a current price, and you should check xcaret.com on the day you book. Xcaret is the one line where paying more buys something that June stretches: the park is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Things to do in Playa del Carmen in June
With 7.3 rain days in the average June, the plans that survive a shower are the ones already wet: snorkeling, a cenote swim or a ferry crossing to Cozumel. The 86.0°F sea makes all three easy to say yes to.
Xcaret, on the coast south of Playa, is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and advertises more than 50 natural and cultural attractions, among them underground rivers, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion and a coral reef aquarium. Its evening show, Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, features more than 300 performers. For Cozumel, Ultramar sails from the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA on Avenida Benito Juarez. Arrive 30 minutes before departure. Xcaret Xpress also sails the crossing. We could not confirm fares or crossing times for either operator.
Commercially open cenotes near town include the Dos Ojos system and Gran Cenote, both closer to Tulum, plus several smaller sites toward Puerto Morelos. Each is independently run with its own posted price, and we did not record drive times. We found no water-temperature reading for any of them, so we give none. What June adds is air: a 92.5°F average high, so go early.
Quinta Avenida, the downtown spine, is a pedestrian thoroughfare of shops, clubs and restaurants running parallel to the beach, and walking it costs nothing. We could confirm no other free attraction.
Playa del Carmen itinerary for June
Day one, Xcaret. Watch the sunrise at 6:06 a.m. from the beach, then reach the park for its 8:30 a.m. opening. Take the underground rivers and the coral reef aquarium before the afternoon reaches its 92.5°F average high. The park stays open until 10:30 p.m., well past the 7:31 p.m. sunset, so the evening show fits after dark. We did not read its start time.
Day two, Cozumel. Be at the NAVEGA terminal 30 minutes before your Ultramar departure and spend the day on and in the water. If the sky turns, and 7.3 days do, a cenote swim stays a good plan. Come back for Quinta Avenida after sunset. The U.S. State Department’s May 29, 2026 advisory puts Quintana Roo at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” and advises staying on well-lit pedestrian streets and in tourist zones after dark. Yes, for travelers who want warm water and long light and can live with a rain day in four. That means a swim-and-cenote vacation with refundable bookings. No, for anyone whose plan hangs on dry, fixed outdoor days or on non-refundable fares.
Pick May if rain is the worry: 2.75 inches against June’s 6.84, and it ends before the season opens. The core of the storm calendar comes later, with the September 10 peak, and Hurricane Wilma stayed in the vicinity for about two days in October 2005.
