Playa del Carmen in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Things to Do

April in Playa del Carmen is hot, mostly dry and outside the Atlantic hurricane season. The average high is 91.4°F, the average low 66.9°F, and measurable rain falls on 2.6 days. The Caribbean off the beach is already near 82.5°F.

The decision is whether to move the trip four weeks either way. March runs a little cooler with a slightly cooler sea, and May brings roughly twice the rain days. If April is not fixed yet, our month-by-month destination guides cover the alternatives.

Playa del Carmen began in 1937 as a small fishing settlement. The 2020 census counted 304,942 residents, which makes it the second-largest city in Quintana Roo after Cancun. Neighborhoods, hotels and the year-round picture live in our Playa del Carmen guide.

Playa del Carmen weather in April

Every figure here for air temperature and rain comes from Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA): 1991-2020 normals for station 23014 at Leona Vicario, near Puerto Morelos, about 25 miles north. It is the nearest official station on this stretch of coast, and Playa itself is not separately measured. For April it records an average high of 91.4°F, an average low of 66.9°F and 1.92 inches of precipitation.

SMN counts 2.6 days of measurable rain in an average April, or about one day in twelve. The station sheet does not publish the threshold behind that count, so treat it as SMN’s tally and not as a like-for-like match for a US one. A total of 1.92 inches for the whole month is small enough that a single wet afternoon can account for much of it.

The gap between the average high and the average low is 24.5 degrees. Pack for heat first: light fabrics, sun protection and a hat for the middle of the day. Add one thin layer for the first hour after sunrise and for air-conditioned restaurants.

On April 15 daylight lasts about 12 hours 40 minutes. The sun rises at 6:27 a.m. and sets at 7:08 p.m. local time (sunrise-sunset.org gives 11:27 and 00:08 UTC, converted for Quintana Roo, which sits five hours behind UTC). Dinner outdoors therefore starts in fading light and finishes in the dark.

Can you swim in Playa del Carmen in April? Sea temperature

The sea surface off Playa del Carmen averages 82.5°F in April. That figure comes from the Open-Meteo Marine API, not from the weather station, and it is the mean of DAILY MAXIMA over 2015-2024. A 24-hour mean would read a shade lower.

At 82.5°F the water is warm enough to swim without a wetsuit, and a swim after sunrise will feel slightly cooler than the headline number because the daily maximum comes later in the day. Air highs of 91.4°F make the sea the obvious way to cool off in the afternoon.

Our sources carry no wind, wave or seaweed readings for April, so we give none. Check the day’s beach conditions with your hotel or a local operator before planning a boat or snorkeling day around the sea.

How busy is Playa del Carmen in April? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate data, so we rank April against no other month on price or crowds. The calendar does give one anchor. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, so April falls outside it, and May already counts about twice the rain days.

We have no lead-time data either, so we name no number of weeks for booking. Two purchases are safe to make early. Ultramar’s Cozumel ferry tickets stay valid for six months from purchase, and Xcaret prices its tickets dynamically, so check the operator’s own page on the day you buy. Quintana Roo charges foreign tourists a mandatory environmental sanitation fee, the Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental, known as Visitax, under Article 51 Octies of the state’s Law of Rights. It is payable online at visitax.gob.mx or through authorized companies. We could not confirm the current peso amount on the portal, so we give none.

With average highs of 91.4°F, the upgrade that changes an April stay is a room with air conditioning that works and a pool within reach. That is our judgment, and we have no rate data to say what it adds to a bill.

Things to do in Playa del Carmen in April

Open-air plans on a fixed schedule, the Cozumel crossing and a full day at Xcaret, fall outside hurricane season and face rain on about one day in twelve. With about 12 hours 40 minutes of daylight, there is room for a morning at the park and an evening in town.

Parque Xcaret, on the coast south of town, is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and advertises more than 50 natural and cultural attractions: underground rivers, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion and a coral reef aquarium. Its evening show, Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, features more than 300 performers. We could not read a dated ticket price, so check xcaret.com before you buy. In town, Quinta Avenida is the pedestrian spine of shops, clubs and restaurants.

Ultramar’s Cozumel ferry leaves from the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA on Avenida Benito Juarez, and passengers must be there 30 minutes before departure. Xcaret Xpress also sails the crossing, but we could not read its fare or timetable. The cenotes Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote lie closer to Tulum, with smaller sites toward Puerto Morelos, each with its own posted price. Underground water changes little through the year, so April’s contribution is the air, with afternoon highs near 91.4°F.

Our sources list no free attraction with April dates. Quinta Avenida is a public pedestrian street, so walking it costs only what you order along it.

Playa del Carmen itinerary for April

Day one, Xcaret. Sunrise is at 6:27 a.m., so a walk on the beach before the park opens at 8:30 a.m. catches the coolest air of the day. Put the underground rivers and the coral reef aquarium in the hottest stretch, from late morning through mid-afternoon. Stay for Xcaret Mexico Espectacular in the evening. The park closes at 10:30 p.m.

Day two, Cozumel. Be at the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA 30 minutes before your Ultramar departure, and check the day’s timetable, because we did not read one. Sunset is at 7:08 p.m., so a return that lands by late afternoon leaves the evening for Quinta Avenida. If rain arrives, swap the crossing for the shops and restaurants there and use your ferry ticket on another day within its six months.

Playa del Carmen in April vs March and May

Air figures for all three months are SMN normals for 1991-2020 from the same station. The average high climbs only from 90.1°F to 91.4°F to 92.1°F. The average low moves more, gaining 2.7 degrees with each month, from 64.2°F to 66.9°F to 69.6°F. April counts the fewest rain days of the three at 2.6, against March’s 2.9 and May’s 5.3, though its 1.92 inches of rain already exceeds March’s 1.64.

Moving to March gives up 1.1 degrees of sea warmth (81.4°F against 82.5°F) and gains a high 1.3 degrees lower. Rain days barely change. Moving to May adds 1.9 degrees of sea warmth (84.4°F) and warmer nights. In exchange it brings about twice the April rain days and 2.75 inches of precipitation.

Is April a good time to visit Playa del Carmen?

Yes for anyone who wants a warm sea, few rain days and plans that hold: 82.5°F water, 2.6 rain days and no hurricane season. No for anyone who wants cool afternoons, since highs average 91.4°F. The U.S. State Department’s Mexico advisory dated May 29, 2026 puts Quintana Roo at Level 2, exercise increased caution, and advises staying on well-lit pedestrian streets and in tourist zones after dark. It names Playa del Carmen among the cities with Tourist Assistance Modules.

If heat is the objection, March trims only 1.3 degrees off the average high, and we hold no data for earlier months. If a cooler sea is the objection, May is the better call at 84.4°F, with the rain-day count to accept.

Among the three months, April pairs the fewest rain days (2.6) with a sea that already reads 82.5°F, and it arrives before May’s jump to 5.3.

The last word

Book April if 91.4°F afternoons sound like a fair trade for a sea near 82.5°F and rain on about one day in twelve. Then settle the airport before the hotel. Cancun International (CUN) lies about 68 kilometers from Playa del Carmen. Tulum International, open since December 2023, is the closer option only if you are staying on the southern Riviera Maya.
