FLORIDA · DE LEON SPRINGS · SEPTEMBER
September at De Leon Springs still runs on summer heat. NOAA’s normals put the average afternoon at 89.5°F, and measurable rain falls on 9.8 days of the month. The month also sits at the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season, and the season peaks around September 10, as our Florida orientation sets out.
What September hands a spring-country trip is daylight. On September 15 the sun is up for 12 hours 22 minutes, enough to swim early and still have light after dinner. What it takes away is certainty, so book rooms you can cancel and keep one flexible day in hand. For the year-round picture, our best-time guide lays out the Florida seasons.

Orlando’s MCO is the airport our Florida orientation pairs with the center of the state, and our flights guide weighs the alternatives. Outside a few resort bubbles Florida is car country, as getting around Florida explains, and where to stay in Florida covers the beds. The month before at the same spring is in De Leon Springs in August.
De Leon Springs weather in September: average highs, lows and rain days
| September normal | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 89.5°F |
| Average low | 73.9°F |
| Precipitation | 6.55 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 9.8 |
| Daylight on Sep 15 | 12 h 22 min |
| Sunrise / sunset, Sep 15 | 7:09 a.m. / 7:31 p.m. EDT |
Every figure here is a NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 normal from station USW00012841, the Orlando Executive gauge that also serves Blue Spring, about 15 km (9 miles) south of De Leon Springs in the same DeLand country. It is an official station reading from a real thermometer, though that thermometer stands some distance from the spring itself. On that gauge an average September peaks at 89.5°F in the afternoon, bottoms out at 73.9°F before dawn and collects 6.55 inches of rain.
Rain of at least 0.10 inch falls on 9.8 days in an average September, so roughly one day in three gets wet enough to count. In the wet-season pattern our Florida orientation describes, that rain tends to arrive as afternoon thunderstorms. Plan outdoor time for the morning and keep a roof within reach after lunch. Two dry days out of three still leave most of a long weekend clear.
Between the average high and low sits a gap of 15.6°F, and neither end calls for a sweater. Pack light, quick-drying clothes, a rain shell that folds into a daypack, a hat, sandals that can get wet, and one long-sleeved layer for air-conditioned restaurants and cars.
On September 15 the sun rises at 7:09 a.m. and sets at 7:31 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, converted from sunrise-sunset.org’s 11:09 and 23:31 UTC. That adds up to about 12 hours 22 minutes of daylight. Aim to wrap up an evening walk or paddle by 7:30 p.m.
How warm is De Leon Springs in September?
An average September day at the Orlando Executive gauge climbs to 89.5°F and falls to 73.9°F overnight, a spread of 15.6°F. We could not verify humidity figures, so we give no heat index. Expect the afternoon to feel hotter than the thermometer reads on a still, sticky day.
Mornings open near 74°F: shorts and a T-shirt, with a swimsuit underneath if the spring is the first stop. By early afternoon the air nears 89.5°F. A wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle belong in the bag from breakfast onward.
We found no count of freezing nights for September, and with an average low of 73.9°F a frost sits far outside the month’s normal range. Leave the cold-weather layers at home.
How busy is De Leon Springs in September? Crowds and prices
September falls between Florida’s two annual price peaks, the holiday weeks and spring break, as our Florida trip-cost guide lays out. We found no monthly room-rate or occupancy series for De Leon Springs, so we crown no month the cheapest. The discounts Florida offers in September come with the hurricane season attached.
Book a refundable rate. We have no lead-time data for local lodging, so we set no number of weeks, and the cancellation terms matter more than the booking date. Check the National Hurricane Center outlook the week you travel, and again the day before you leave.
We could not verify the lodging-tax rate that applies to a De Leon Springs stay, so we give no percentage. Ask for the total with taxes and fees when you book, and compare that total across properties.
Flexibility is the one line where spending more changes September. A rate that cancels free, even at a higher nightly price, lets you reschedule around a named storm without losing the booking. Cheaper non-refundable rooms make more sense in October, when 4.7 wet days lower the odds of a washout inside the same hurricane season.
Things to do in De Leon Springs in September

September keeps the long days of summer, 12 hours 22 minutes of light on the 15th, while its afternoons run 2.3°F under August’s. That pairing suits a cold-water swim at the spring in the morning and a second outing in the evening, with the stormy middle of the day spent under a roof.
Two springs sit within reach of the normals above: De Leon Springs State Park, the spring that gives the community its name, and Blue Spring, about 15 km to the south and served by the same NOAA gauge. We could not verify September entry fees, opening hours, parking capacity or a measured water temperature for either, so we print none. Check each park’s official page for current rates and closures before driving out, and things to do in Florida has the wider state list.
Florida spring water holds close to the same temperature through the year, and the air around it swings with the seasons. The contrast between the two is widest in the hot months. September sits near the top of that range with an 89.5°F afternoon, and October’s 84.4°F high narrows the gap.
We could not verify any free-entry day, free ranger program or fee waiver at either park for September, so we list none. The sunset at 7:31 p.m. on the 15th costs nothing, and we can time it for you.
De Leon Springs in September: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts with the 7:09 a.m. sunrise. Be at De Leon Springs State Park when its gate opens, swim or paddle while the air is still near 74°F, and leave the water before the heat builds toward 89.5°F. Eat lunch indoors in DeLand and keep the early afternoon for a museum, a nap or a long meal, since storm odds run about one day in three. Head back outdoors once the cells pass, and finish the evening walk by the 7:31 p.m. sunset.
Day two moves south to Blue Spring on the same early schedule. If the morning sky is already stacking clouds, swap the order: indoor plans first, outdoors after the storm clears. If the National Hurricane Center is tracking a system toward central Florida, skip the water, follow local emergency guidance and read our Florida safety guide before deciding to stay.
De Leon Springs in September vs August and October
| NOAA normal, 1991-2020 | August | September | October |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 91.8°F | 89.5°F | 84.4°F |
| Average low | 75.3°F | 73.9°F | 68.3°F |
| Precipitation | 7.66 in | 6.55 in | 3.24 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.7 | 9.8 | 4.7 |
From August to September the average high drops 2.3°F and the low 1.4°F, while rain falls from 7.66 to 6.55 inches over 1.9 fewer wet days. October brings the sharper turn: another 5.1°F off the high and 5.6°F off the low, with rain roughly halving to 3.24 inches across 4.7 days. We have no verified water temperature for any of the three months, so the swimming comparison rests on the air.
Shifting four weeks earlier, into August, adds 2.3°F to the afternoon and 1.9 wet days to the month. Shifting four weeks later brings about five fewer wet days and mornings near 68°F, at the cost of the deep heat that makes a spring plunge so welcome. Both moves stay inside the hurricane season, which runs to November 30.
Is September a good time to visit De Leon Springs?
Yes, for travelers who want warm swimming weather, can start early and are happy with a refundable booking and a loose plan. No, for anyone whose trip hinges on dry afternoons, a fixed date or long midday hikes: 9.8 wet days and 89.5°F highs make those hard to guarantee.
If the answer is no, pick October. Its 3.24 inches of rain are about half September’s, its 84.4°F high is kinder for walking, and its 4.7 wet days leave far more afternoons open. The case for each Florida season sits in the best time to visit Florida.
September pairs 12 hours 22 minutes of daylight with an afternoon high 2.3°F below August’s and 1.9 fewer rainy days to plan around.
The last word
Book the room you can cancel, then plan each September day from the water outward. The rain to budget for is the heavy kind: on 1.8 days of an average September, the Orlando Executive gauge records an inch or more. Two nights plus a spare morning absorb that, so build the extra morning into the trip and set the alarm for the 7:09 a.m. sunrise.
