De Leon Springs in August: Weather, Rain Days, Crowds and How It Compares to July and September

De Leon Springs in August runs hot and wet. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals give an average high of 91.8°F, an average low of 75.3°F and 7.66 inches of rain across the month. The spring at the center of De Leon Springs State Park is the reason to go anyway: a swim in spring water on a 90-degree morning is one of the better ways to spend a Florida summer day.

August also falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30 (dates in our Florida overview). If your dates are already set, the useful questions are practical. How do you shape a day around heat and afternoon storms? Would July or September serve you better?

Every figure here comes from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information: the official 1991–2020 monthly normals for station USW00012841, the Orlando Executive gauge that also supplies our Blue Spring numbers. It is a real thermometer, not a reanalysis grid cell, but it does not stand at the spring. Read the 91.8°F average high and the 75.3°F average low as the regional picture. Rain adds up to 7.66 inches in a typical August.

Rain falls on 11.7 days in an average August, counting any day with at least 0.10 inch. That is roughly three days in eight, so a four-day trip should expect wet weather on at least one of them. Florida’s wet season delivers its storms mostly in the afternoon (see our Florida seasons guide). Keep the outdoor plans in the morning. A tenth of an inch is only a shower, but thunder with it means getting out of the water.

Between the 91.8°F afternoon and the 75.3°F night lies a spread of 16.5°F, and nothing in that range calls for a sweater. Pack quick-dry shorts and shirts, a light rain shell, water shoes, a dry bag for phone and keys at the swim area, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle.

On August 15 the sun rises at 6:53 am and sets at 8:05 pm Eastern Daylight Time, converted from the UTC times published by sunrise-sunset.org, for about 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight. Usable light lasts past 8 pm, long enough to return to the water in the early evening once an afternoon storm has passed.

How warm is De Leon Springs in August?

Air temperatures top out at an average 91.8°F and bottom out at 75.3°F, a 16.5°F swing. For the water, we could not read a temperature for the spring in our sources, so we give none. When we do publish Florida water figures, they are averages of daily maxima, a little warmer than a 24-hour mean. Read any number you find for the spring with that in mind.

Shortly after the 6:53 am sunrise the air sits near its 75.3°F average low: a swimsuit under a long-sleeved sun shirt is enough. By early afternoon, with the average high at 91.8°F, add the hat, stay in the shade or in the water, and keep the rain shell in your bag after lunch.

Freezing nights are out of the question. NOAA puts the August average low at 75.3°F, and our sources carry no frost-day count for the month. No layer beyond the rain shell is needed after dark.

De Leon Springs in August: crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for the De Leon Springs area, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. The calendar fact we can give: Florida’s traditional high season is the dry stretch from November through April (see our best-time guide). August sits outside it, inside hurricane season.

Without lead-time data, we give no week count for booking ahead. What matters more in August is flexibility. A free-cancellation rate lets you move the trip if a tropical system shows up, so check the National Hurricane Center outlook in the week before you drive.

We could not verify the lodging-tax rate for rooms near De Leon Springs, so we give no percentage. Ask for the all-in nightly total, with taxes and any resort fee included, before you confirm.

If you pay more anywhere in August, pay for the cancellation policy. A non-refundable discount in hurricane season is a bet on the weather, and a refundable rate removes it. Our Florida trip-cost guide covers what the rest of the budget looks like.

August turns the spring into the main event. With the air at a 91.8°F average high, a swim becomes the reason for the trip. Sunset at 8:05 pm also leaves time for a second dip after the storms.

The core of any visit is De Leon Springs State Park: its spring-fed swimming area, the shaded lawns around the basin, and the spring run for paddling. Inside the park, the Old Spanish Sugar Mill Grill sets a griddle into each table so you cook your own pancakes. We could not verify August admission, opening hours or parking capacity. Check Florida State Parks before you go, and see Florida things to do for the wider list.

Florida spring water holds steady through the year while the air moves. In August the air is at its hottest, so the contrast with the water is sharpest and a swim cools you most.

We could not verify any free-entry day or free program at the park in August. Look for current offers on the Florida State Parks site when you plan.

De Leon Springs in August: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Arrive close to opening (confirm the posted time, since we could not verify August hours) and swim while the air climbs from the 75.3°F low. Late morning, take a table at the Old Spanish Sugar Mill Grill for pancakes. Spend the hottest hours, which are also the likeliest storm window, in your room or in the car. Around 5 pm, if the sky has cleared, go back for a second swim, with light until the 8:05 pm sunset.

Day two. Take another early swim, or paddle the spring run if the park rental is operating. Blue Spring State Park lies in the same DeLand country, though its manatees are a winter draw (our manatee guide covers the season). If thunder starts by midmorning or a tropical system gets named, get out of the water, check our Florida safety notes, and switch to an indoor day or use the free-cancellation window.

De Leon Springs in August vs July and September

NOAA normal, 1991–2020 July August September
Average high 91.9°F 91.8°F 89.5°F
Average low 75.0°F 75.3°F 73.9°F
Precipitation 8.07 in 7.66 in 6.55 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 11.9 11.7 9.8

From the same NOAA station and period, July and August are nearly twins: July’s high is 91.9°F against 91.8°F, its rain 8.07 inches against 7.66, its rain days 11.9 against 11.7. September pulls away, running 2.3°F cooler by day at 89.5°F and 1.4°F cooler at night at 73.9°F. It is also 1.11 inches drier at 6.55 inches, with 1.9 fewer rain days.

Moving four weeks earlier into July changes almost nothing: the high rises 0.1°F, rain climbs by 0.41 inch, and nights cool by 0.3°F. Moving four weeks later buys a cooler, drier trip. The catch is the statistical peak of hurricane season around September 10 (per NOAA, in our Florida overview), so any September booking should be refundable.

Is August a good time to visit De Leon Springs?

Yes for swimmers happy to start early, families tied to a summer vacation window, and anyone whose only week off is in August. No for hikers who want long midday walks, travelers who struggle in heat, and anyone who cannot book a refundable room.

If the answer is no, aim for September: 2.3°F cooler by day and 1.9 fewer rain days, with the hurricane caveat. For truly mild weather, Florida’s November-through-April dry season is the target, and our best-time guide covers it month by month.

Of July, August and September, August has the warmest average night at 75.3°F, so an evening swim ends in warm air.

The last word

Book the refundable room, set the alarm for sunrise and keep the afternoon loose. Take the storms seriously: in an average August, 2.2 days bring an inch of rain or more, enough to end a swim early and send the whole day indoors. Mornings at the spring are dependable, so plan the trip around them.
