FLORIDA · SIESTA KEY BEACH · DECEMBER
Siesta Key in December is a beach you can cross barefoot at noon without the hot-sand sprint. The quartz-crystal sand stays pale and soft underfoot, the water keeps its turquoise, and the afternoon settles at a normal high of 75.2°F. Rain interrupts three days out of the whole month.
What the month takes back is the swim. The sea off the key averages 68.1°F in December against 75.0°F in November, and the Atlantic hurricane season has already closed on November 30. Visit Sarasota County dates the island’s peak season from January to April, so these four weeks sit in the gap between the warm water and the busy lots.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SIESTA KEY BEACH
December trades November’s warmer water for mild afternoons and a beach lot that has not yet hit its January-to-April crush, and the swim is the only real sacrifice.
NOAA 1991–2020 NORMALS · SEA 68.1°F · PEAK SEASON STARTS IN JANUARY
Go for: 75.2°F afternoons on quartz sand, three rain days in a whole month, and a 976-space lot before the January to April squeeze.
Think twice before: building the trip around long swims: the sea averages 68.1°F, and that figure is a mean of daily maxima rather than a 24-hour mean.

Every figure here is a December figure, measured either at the Sarasota-Bradenton weather station or in the water off the key. For the year-round questions, our where to stay and trip cost guides carry the answers that do not change with the date.
Siesta Key Beach weather in December: average highs, lows and rain days
| December on Siesta Key | Normal, 1991–2020 |
|---|---|
| Average high | 75.2°F |
| Average low | 55.2°F |
| Precipitation | 2.33 inches |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.0 |
| Days with 1 inch or more | 0.6 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 0.3 |
| Daylight on December 15 | 10 h 28 min |
| Sea surface | 68.1°F |
The normals above come from NOAA NCEI’s 1991–2020 monthly series for station USW00012871 at Sarasota-Bradenton, a real thermometer a few miles from the sand rather than a grid cell averaged with open water. It gives December a high of 75.2°F, a low of 55.2°F and 2.33 inches of rain over the month. Same place, same air as the key itself, which is why we use it instead of a reanalysis figure.
Measurable rain, meaning 0.10 inch or more, falls on 3.0 days in an average December. That is roughly one day in ten, and the other 28 are dry enough to leave the towel out. A proper soaking of an inch or more averages 0.6 day, so about three Decembers in five deliver one. Plan the month as if you will move a single lunch indoors, not a whole afternoon.
Twenty degrees separate the afternoon high from the night low, and that spread decides the suitcase. Shorts work from about eleven to four, then a fleece and long pants earn their space in the bag for dinner. Freezing nights do exist on paper at 0.3 per December, so a genuine cold snap is rare rather than fictional. Nobody needs a winter coat, and everybody regrets leaving the long sleeves at home.
Light is the real constraint. On December 15 the sun comes up at 7:11 a.m. and goes down at 5:39 p.m. local time, which works out to 10 hours 28 minutes, per sunrise-sunset.org. The beach empties itself by about five, and dinner happens in the dark whatever time you sit down.
Can you swim in Siesta Key Beach in December? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Water off the key averages 68.1°F in December, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024. One caveat travels with that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it describes the warmest stretch of the afternoon rather than the whole 24 hours. Morning water runs a shade below it, and other tables using 24-hour means will show a slightly cooler Gulf.
Sixty-eight degrees is swimmable and bracing at once. Children go in without negotiating, adults do a decisive twenty minutes, and anyone planning long swims wants a shorty wetsuit. The air helps less than you would hope: 75.2°F against 68.1°F leaves barely seven degrees between the towel and the water, so getting out is no great reward. November, at 75.0°F in the same marine series, is the month when the Gulf does the comforting.
On wind and swell we have nothing measured: no December wind or wave series for this stretch of coast passed our checks, so we give no figures. What we can date is the calendar. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center runs the Atlantic season from June 1 to November 30, which puts every December day outside it.
How busy is Siesta Key Beach in December? Crowds and prices
Visit Sarasota County names January to April as the peak season, the months when the beach lots fill fast and the advice is to arrive as early as possible. December falls ahead of that window. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the key, so we crown no month cheapest and no month dearest: what we can say is that the busiest stretch of the Siesta Key year starts after this one ends.
Arrival time matters more than lead time on this island. Get to the Pavilion lot in the first hour or two after sunrise and its 976 spaces are a formality; roll up at noon in the holiday fortnight and you are circling. For lodging we have no booking-lead data, so treat four to six weeks as a working rule of thumb for a regular December week and longer for the days around the holidays (est.).
We could not verify the county’s lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. It appears at checkout on rental and hotel bookings rather than in the nightly price you first see, and our Florida trip cost guide covers the fee layer that catches first-timers, resort charges and beach parking included.
One upgrade genuinely changes the month: paying for a place within walking distance of the beach. Four of the numbered county accesses, 2, 3, 10 and 13, are pedestrian entries with no parking or a single accessible space. Sleep near one and the whole parking question disappears from your December, which is worth more in January to April but still buys back a morning here.
Things to do in Siesta Key Beach in December

December gives you the whole daylight stretch outdoors. At a 75.2°F high you can walk the sand at one in the afternoon, which is exactly what July does not allow, and the mosquito-and-thunderstorm arithmetic of the wet season is gone. Shelling, long beach walks and bike loops all run from 7:11 a.m. to 5:39 p.m. without anyone checking a radar.
Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion is the main event, with 976 parking spaces and the famous quartz-crystal sand that stays cool under bare feet. Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach sit further south on the same island and are separate beaches, not alternative names for the big one. Lido Key adds a third stretch within reach, and the free BayRunner trolley runs there daily every 20 to 30 minutes between 8 a.m. and noon.
The sand and the shells behave the same all year. The air is what moves: 75.2°F now against 80.0°F in November, and a water temperature that has dropped 6.9 degrees over those four weeks. That flips the day’s shape. In fall the beach is a place to cool off, in December it is a place to warm up, and the long shell walk belongs before five rather than after.
Plenty here costs nothing. Beach access itself is free, and so are both trolleys: the 77 Islander Siesta runs daily, roughly every 30 minutes from 8 to 10 a.m., and the BayRunner covers Lido Key on its morning schedule. Two beach mornings and a trolley ride between them is a day that spends nothing but sunscreen.
Siesta Key Beach in December: a two-day itinerary
Start day one on the 77 Islander between 8 and 10 a.m., or park at the Pavilion before nine while the 976 spaces are still an abstraction. Morning goes to the shell line while the air climbs. Hold the swim for one o’clock, when the thermometer is nearest 75.2°F and the water is at the top of its 68.1°F daily curve. Claim a west-facing patch of sand by five for a 5:39 p.m. sunset, then eat after dark, because December does not offer an alternative.
Day two heads south to Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach, or across on the BayRunner to Lido Key before its noon cutoff. If one of the month’s three measurable rain days lands on you, it usually means a shower rather than a washout: only 0.6 day per December reaches an inch. Move lunch indoors, let it pass, and keep the afternoon. A full rainy day is worth spending in Sarasota instead, and our things to do in Florida guide has the indoor list.
Siesta Key Beach in December vs November and January
| Normal | November | December | January |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.0°F | 75.2°F | 72.5°F |
| Average low | 60.1°F | 55.2°F | 52.3°F |
| Precipitation | 1.81 in | 2.33 in | 2.79 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 2.5 | 3.0 | 3.6 |
| Sea surface | 75.0°F | 68.1°F | 65.2°F |
Air figures for all three months come from the same NOAA NCEI 1991–2020 series at Sarasota-Bradenton, and the sea figures from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024. November runs 4.8 degrees warmer by day and 6.9 degrees warmer in the water. January gives back 2.7 degrees of air, 2.9 degrees of sea, and adds half a rain day plus 0.46 inch of rain to the month.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy a proper swimming sea at 75.0°F, at the price of a trip that ends inside the hurricane season’s final month. Shift four weeks later and the beach is still fine at 72.5°F, but you land in the January-to-April peak the county warns about, with 3.6 rain days and a 65.2°F Gulf. Our November and January pages carry each case in full.
Is December a good time to visit Siesta Key Beach?
Yes, if your beach day is built on walking, shelling, reading and short dips. Three rain days, 75.2°F afternoons and a lot that has not yet entered peak season make for an easy week. No, if the trip only works with hours in the water: 68.1°F is a quick swim, not an afternoon, and no amount of sun changes that between now and April.
Swimmers should take November, four weeks earlier, when the Gulf sits at 75.0°F and rain falls on 2.5 days rather than 3.0. The cost is the calendar: the Atlantic hurricane season runs to November 30, so a fall booking wants flexible dates in a way a December one does not.
No other month pairs a 75.2°F afternoon with a beach that is outside hurricane season and still outside the January-to-April parking crush.
The last word
Decide the water question first and the rest of December falls into place: book it for the sand and the light, not for the swim. The sand deserves the trip on its own, and the jury agrees. U.S. News & World Report ranked Siesta Beach the best beach in the United States for 2026, an award you can collect in a 75-degree afternoon with room to spread a towel. Get there before nine, and stay through the 5:39 p.m. sunset.
