SIESTA KEY BEACH · FLORIDA · JANUARY
Come to Siesta Key in January and the numbers read gentle rather than tropical: an average high of 72.5°F, an average low of 52.3°F, and a Gulf that averages 65.2°F. The sand, the quartz-crystal kind that carried this beach to the top of U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 ranking of American beaches, is the same pale, cool surface it is in July. In January most visitors walk it far more than they swim off it.
January also opens the stretch Visit Sarasota County calls peak season, January through April, and the county’s own advice for the 976-space lot at Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion is to arrive as early as possible. Daylight is short by Florida standards too: 10 hours 39 minutes on January 15, with the sun dropping into the Gulf just before 6 p.m. Start early on both counts.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SIESTA KEY BEACH · JANUARY
Come in January for 72.5°F afternoons and 10 hours 39 minutes of daylight, plan the swimming short at 65.2°F, and reach the 976-space lot before the morning fills it.
AVG HIGH 72.5°F · SEA 65.2°F · 3.6 WET DAYS · PEAK SEASON JAN–APR
Go for: dry-season afternoons at 72.5°F, a sunset at 5:58 p.m. straight off the sand, and two free trolleys that run the key and the bay every morning.
Think twice before: promising anyone a long swim. The sea averages 65.2°F, and that figure is a mean of daily maxima, so the round-the-clock average sits a shade below it.

Every figure here for the air comes from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, the 1991-2020 normals at station USW00012871, the Sarasota-Bradenton gauge that serves the key itself. The water figure is a different kind of number: it comes from a marine model, Open-Meteo, averaged over 2015-2024, not from a thermometer in the surf. Knowing which is which is useful the day a forecast disagrees with a table.
Siesta Key Beach weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | January average |
|---|---|
| Average high | 72.5°F |
| Average low | 52.3°F |
| Precipitation | 2.79 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.6 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.4 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 0.8 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 65.2°F |
| Daylight, January 15 | 10 h 39 min |
NOAA NCEI puts January’s average high at 72.5°F and the average low at 52.3°F, with 2.79 inches of precipitation across the month, all from the 1991-2020 normals at Sarasota-Bradenton. That is a real instrument standing in the same coastal air as the key, not a grid cell interpolated by a reanalysis, and the difference between those two kinds of number can run several degrees on a January minimum.
Those 2.79 inches arrive in few installments. Measurable rain, meaning 0.10 inch or more, falls on 3.6 days in an average January, roughly one day in eight. A genuine soaking, an inch or more in the gauge, turns up on 0.4 days, which works out to about two Januarys in five. A wet January day here usually reshuffles an afternoon rather than canceling it.
Between the 72.5°F afternoon and the 52.3°F dawn sits a swing of 20.2°F, and that spread is what catches out a suitcase packed for Florida. Mornings on the sand want a fleece and long pants. The same body wants a shirt by two o’clock. NOAA’s normals also record 0.8 nights at or below 32°F in an average January at that station, so one jacket that actually closes is worth the space it takes.
On January 15 the sun rises at 7:20 a.m. Eastern and sets at 5:58 p.m., giving 10 hours 39 minutes of daylight. Siesta Key faces west, so sunset happens off the beach in front of you rather than somewhere behind your shoulder. The corollary is less charming: dinner happens in the dark, and a walk started at five finishes in twilight.
Can you swim in Siesta Key Beach in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The Gulf off Siesta Key averages 65.2°F in January, from Open-Meteo’s marine model over 2015-2024. Read that number carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, so the round-the-clock average sits a shade below it. Anyone quoting you 65 degrees for this beach in January is quoting the afternoon.
At sixty-five degrees you can swim, and you will not be comfortable doing it for long. Wading works, a plunge works, and children routinely last longer in it than the adults watching from the towel. For a real hour in the water, a shorty wetsuit changes the whole month, and snorkeling becomes a short session rather than a lazy one.
On wind and swell we stop short: we found no monthly wind or wave statistics for the water off the key, so we publish no figures and suggest you read the marine forecast the morning you go. One date is settled. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 according to the National Hurricane Center, so January sits outside it entirely.
How busy is Siesta Key Beach in January? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Visit Sarasota County names January through April its peak season, and that is a statement about the calendar rather than about rates. We found no monthly occupancy figures and no room-rate series for the key, so we crown no month expensive and rank none of them against each other. What the county does state plainly is the consequence on the ground: the beach lots fill up fast during peak times.
That pushes a booking in one practical direction. The earlier you lock a bed within walking distance of the sand, the less the 976-space lot matters to your week. We could not verify a typical booking window in weeks for Siesta Key, so we give no number for it. The daily window we can give: the county’s advice is to arrive as early as possible, and the free 77 Islander Siesta trolley runs daily roughly every 30 minutes from 8 to 10 a.m., exactly the hours when those spaces go.
On the tourist development tax, we could not verify the Sarasota County rate, so we give no percentage. Expect a county lodging tax and state sales tax to sit on top of the nightly rate you are quoted, and read the total line before you confirm. Our Florida trip cost guide handles the wider budget, and where to stay in Florida covers the choice of base.
Paying more changes exactly one thing in January, and it is location. A room on the key close enough to walk to a beach access removes the arrival-time problem from all seven mornings, which no other line of the budget can do. Food, gear and a rental car cost what they cost in any month. If that walking-distance premium is out of range, the free trolley is the same solution at a slower speed.
Things to do in Siesta Key Beach in January

In January you get the one thing a Florida beach cannot offer in August: a 72.5°F afternoon you can spend entirely outdoors without negotiating with the heat. Walking the full length of the sand at two o’clock is a pleasure rather than an endurance test. Add the calendar, too. The Atlantic hurricane season closed on November 30, so the storm anxiety that shadows a September booking simply does not apply.
Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion is the anchor, with 976 spaces behind it and the quartz-crystal sand that took the top spot in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 ranking of American beaches. Not every way onto that sand comes with a car space: Accesses 2, 3, 10 and 13 are pedestrian accesses, with no parking at all or a single accessible space. Lido Key sits a short hop north, reachable on the free BayRunner trolley every 20 to 30 minutes between 8 a.m. and noon.
Nothing about the sand shifts with the calendar. Quartz stays pale and cool underfoot in July and in January alike, which is half of this beach’s reputation. The air does all the moving. At a 52.3°F dawn the surface is genuinely cold at 7:20 a.m., and the same stretch is pleasant barefoot by eleven. In practice the early hour belongs to walkers and shell hunters, and the sitting starts after lunch.
Free in January, and free the rest of the year: both trolleys. The 77 Islander Siesta runs the key daily, roughly every 30 minutes from 8 to 10 a.m., and the BayRunner to Lido Key runs every 20 to 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to noon, neither charging a fare according to Visit Sarasota County. The 5:58 p.m. sunset on January 15 costs nothing either.
Siesta Key Beach in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at the 976-space lot before 8 a.m., because sunrise is at 7:20 and the county’s own line for January through April is to arrive as early as possible. Walk the sand while it is still in the fifties and largely empty, eat late morning, and take the middle of the day on the beach when the air reaches its 72.5°F. Hold the last hour for the water’s edge. The sun goes into the Gulf at 5:58 p.m. on the 15th, and the light drops fast behind it.
Day two moves off the key. Take the BayRunner across to Lido Key between 8 a.m. and noon, free and every 20 to 30 minutes, then come back for the afternoon. If one of January’s 3.6 wet days lands on you, remember its shape: only 0.4 days a year deliver an inch or more, so most rain here interrupts a morning. Push the beach to the back half of the day and spend the front half inland with our Florida things-to-do guide.
Siesta Key Beach in January vs December and February
| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Precipitation | Days 0.10 in+ | Sea (daily maxima) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| December | 75.2°F | 55.2°F | 2.33 in | 3.0 | 68.1°F |
| January | 72.5°F | 52.3°F | 2.79 in | 3.6 | 65.2°F |
| February | 74.9°F | 54.6°F | 1.92 in | 3.1 | 67.5°F |
Set the three together and January comes out the coolest: 72.5°F against 75.2°F in December and 74.9°F in February, gaps of 2.7 and 2.4 degrees at the same NOAA station. It is also the wettest of the three, 2.79 inches against 2.33 and 1.92, on 3.6 days at 0.10 inch or more against 3.0 and 3.1. The water tracks the air down to 65.2°F, against 68.1°F in December and 67.5°F in February, all three from the same marine model over 2015-2024.
Shift four weeks later and you gain 2.4°F on the air, 2.3°F on the water and 0.87 inch less rain, still inside the county’s January-to-April peak window. Shift four weeks earlier and you gain the warmest water of the three at 68.1°F, plus three December weeks that fall before that window opens, with the holiday fortnight waiting at the end of the month. Our Florida best-time guide takes the argument across all twelve.
Is January a good time to visit Siesta Key Beach?
Yes for walkers, shell hunters, sunset people and anyone leaving a northern winter behind: 72.5°F with 3.6 wet days is a generous month by that standard. No for a family whose definition of a beach holiday is two hours in the water. At 65.2°F, and remember that is an afternoon maximum, the swimming comes short and bracing rather than lazy.
If the water is the point, February is the shift to make. It brings 67.5°F in the Gulf, 2.4°F more in the air, and the driest of the three months at 1.92 inches, without leaving the peak window you were going to book into anyway. Later than that and we leave the three months we have numbers for, so take the best-time guide for March onward.
Of the three, only January keeps the afternoon under 73°F, and that is what makes it the walking month on the beach U.S. News ranked first in the country for 2026: the sand end to end at two o’clock, with the Gulf there for a plunge instead of an hour.
The last word
Book the bed you can walk from, and let the 976 spaces be somebody else’s eight o’clock problem. If you do drive and the lot has gone, keep in mind that Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach are separate beaches on the same key rather than other names for Siesta Beach, each with its own way in, and the 5:58 p.m. sun on January 15 is the same sun from all of them. Pack the fleece for that 52.3°F dawn. You will want it once a day, for about two hours.
