SIESTA KEY BEACH · FEBRUARY · 27.3° N
February gives Siesta Key its driest stretch of the winter and its busiest sand in the same four weeks. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for the Sarasota-Bradenton station put the average high at 74.9°F and the whole month’s rainfall at 1.92 inches. Visit Sarasota County names January through April as peak season, and the 976-space lot behind the public pavilion fills fast inside it. Arrive at nine on a Saturday and you are already late.
The Gulf has not caught up. Water off the key averages 67.5°F in February, roughly 7°F under the air, so swimming becomes a decision rather than a default. Everything else holds: quartz-crystal sand, turquoise water, a west-facing shore that takes the sun down over open water. Where you sleep and what the wider state costs belong to the main Siesta Key guide and our Florida cost page.

Every figure here comes from three sources, and they are not the same kind of measurement. The air normals are NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 readings from a real thermometer at Sarasota-Bradenton, the field that serves the key. The sea figure comes from a marine model averaged over 2015-2024. Parking, trolley and beach details come from Visit Sarasota County, the county’s destination marketing organization.
Siesta Key Beach weather in February: average highs, lows and rain days
| February normal | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 74.9°F |
| Average low | 54.6°F |
| Monthly precipitation | 1.92 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.1 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.4 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 0.1 |
| Daylight on Feb 15 | 11 h 17 min |
| Sea surface (mean of daily highs) | 67.5°F |
Those air normals are NOAA NCEI monthly normals for 1991-2020, recorded at station USW00012871 at Sarasota-Bradenton: average high 74.9°F, average low 54.6°F, 1.92 inches of rain across the month. That is a station record from an instrument on the ground, not a reanalysis grid cell averaged over a box of coastline. Our source flags the obvious caveat too: it is an airport field, and a beach hour with the sea breeze on it will not match a monthly average exactly.
In an average February, 3.1 days record at least 0.10 inch, so measurable rain lands roughly one day in nine. Only 0.4 day reaches a full inch, which works out to a genuine soaking in about two Februaries out of five. Across 28 days the gauge collects 1.92 inches in total. Practically, that reads as a gray morning and a wet hour, not a written-off week.
The gap between the 74.9°F high and the 54.6°F low runs 20.3°F, wider than most people pack for a Florida beach week. Seven in the morning and everything after dark sit in the fifties. Long pants and a fleece for the two ends of the day, shorts and a hat for the middle, and one windbreaker for the sand after sunset covers the whole month.
February 15 brings 11 hours 17 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 7:05 a.m. and sunset at 6:22 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Siesta Key faces west, so the last half hour of that light lands on the water in front of you rather than behind the buildings. The sand empties quickly once the sun goes, and a seven o’clock dinner needs no rushing.
Can you swim in Siesta Key Beach in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off the key averages 67.5°F in February on the Open-Meteo marine model, averaged over 2015-2024. Read that number carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a true 24-hour average. The water you step into at eight in the morning sits below 67.5°F, and the warmest reading of each day is the one the average is built from.
That leaves the Gulf about 7°F under the February air high, and the difference between a swim and a plunge. Shell-hunters and waders in ankle depth notice nothing at all. Anyone planning laps or an hour of snorkeling wants a shorty wetsuit, and children tap out faster than adults. Plenty of people go in anyway and come out fast.
We found no February wind or wave series for this stretch of the Gulf, so we give no figures for either. What we can date is the storm calendar: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so nothing in February belongs to it.
How busy is Siesta Key Beach in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Visit Sarasota County puts peak season at January through April, and February sits square in the middle of it. That is a calendar fact about demand rather than a price ranking. We found no occupancy series and no month-by-month room rates for the key, so we crown no month expensive and no month cheap.
Parking is the part we can put a clock on. The public beach and pavilion hold 976 spaces, and the county’s own guidance for the January-to-April stretch is to arrive as early as possible, because the lots fill fast. The free 77 Islander Siesta trolley runs daily, roughly every 30 minutes from 8 to 10 a.m. Catching one of those trips is the difference between parking and circling. We found no booking-lead data, so we put no number of weeks on when to reserve a room.
We could not verify Sarasota County’s lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Budget a tax line anyway and read the rate on the booking screen before confirming. The wider Florida picture on nightly costs and rental extras sits in our cost guide.
One upgrade changes February more than any other: a bed within walking distance of a beach access. Several numbered accesses on the key, including 2, 3, 10 and 13, are pedestrian entrances with no parking at all or a single accessible space. Walk in through one of those at eleven on a Saturday and the 976-space lot stops being your problem. Where to stay in Florida sets the frame for the rest.
Things to do in Siesta Key Beach in February

Midday walking is the easy option in February. With the air at 74.9°F, the full length of the beach is comfortable at one in the afternoon, open sand included. Measurable rain shows up on about three days in twenty-eight, so an afternoon plan usually survives. Shelling, cycling the key and sitting still all work at the same hour.
Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion anchors the north end with those 976 spaces and the quartz-crystal sand that U.S. News & World Report ranked the best beach in the country for 2026. Turtle Beach and Crescent Beach are separate beaches on the same key, not alternative names for the main one, and both reward the drive south. The BayRunner trolley crosses to Lido Key free of charge, daily, every 20 to 30 minutes between 8 a.m. and noon.
Sand has no season. Water does. Between February and March the Gulf off the key gains 6.4°F on the marine model, from 67.5°F to 73.9°F, while the air gains 3.3°F, from 74.9°F to 78.2°F. The sea moves roughly twice as fast as the air across those four weeks.
Two things cost nothing and run every day of the month: the 77 Islander Siesta trolley from 8 to 10 a.m. and the BayRunner to Lido Key until noon. The pedestrian accesses cost nothing either. We could not verify whether the public lot charges for parking, so we quote no fee: read the signage at the entrance.
Siesta Key Beach in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts before the lot does. Sunrise is at 7:05 a.m., the first 77 Islander trolley rolls at 8, and a car parked by 8:30 removes the only real logistics problem of the day. Beach and shelling until noon, lunch off the sand while the air reaches its daily peak, then the water between one and three, the hours the 67.5°F average is built on. Back on the sand by 5:45 for the 6:22 p.m. sunset.
Day two goes south and across. Turtle Beach and Crescent Beach hold the quieter end of the key, and the free BayRunner to Lido Key stops running at noon, so that crossing is a morning move. If the sky turns, the odds favor one of those 3.1 light days over the 0.4 day of inch-plus rain. Shift the beach to first light and take the wet hours inland toward Sarasota with our Florida things-to-do guide.
Siesta Key Beach in February vs January and March
| Measure | January | February | March |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 72.5°F | 74.9°F | 78.2°F |
| Average low | 52.3°F | 54.6°F | 58.1°F |
| Precipitation | 2.79 in | 1.92 in | 2.85 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.6 | 3.1 | 3.6 |
| Sea surface | 65.2°F | 67.5°F | 73.9°F |
February is the driest of the three by a clear margin: 1.92 inches against 2.79 in January and 2.85 in March, with 3.1 measurable rain days against 3.6 in each neighbor. On air it sits in the middle, 2.4°F above January and 3.3°F below March. On water it leans toward January, at 67.5°F against 65.2°F, while March pulls away to 73.9°F. The air normals come from the same NOAA station series; the sea figures come from the marine model.
Shift four weeks forward and you buy 6.4°F of sea and 3.3°F of air for nearly an inch more rain and half an extra rain day. Shift four weeks back and January gives up 2.4°F of air and 2.3°F of water while raining more, with the same peak-season calendar running underneath. January comes out behind February on every one of those five measures.
Is February a good time to visit Siesta Key Beach?
Yes, for anyone whose beach week is about walking, sitting, shelling and eating outdoors. A 74.9°F afternoon, under two inches of rain across the month and a 6:22 p.m. sunset over water deliver that reliably. No, for a trip built on swimming: a 67.5°F Gulf sends most people back to the towel within a few minutes.
March is the fix, and its price is written down: 73.9°F water and a 78.2°F high, against 2.85 inches of rain and 3.6 measurable rain days. Peak season covers both months, so the swap buys warmth and not quiet. January runs the wrong way for a swimmer, with colder air, colder water and more rain.
No other month of the January-to-April run pairs a 74.9°F afternoon with under two inches of rain for the month.
The last word
Decide on the water first. Swimmers should book March and pay the extra inch of rain. Walkers should book February and pocket the dry days. Then set an alarm for 7:45 a.m. on your first morning, because the 8 o’clock trolley and the 976-space lot decide the shape of a peak-season day. One number we have kept back until now: the station records 0.1 nights at or below 32°F in an average February, so the fleece is for the dawn hour and the hour after sunset, not for the trip.
