Fanning Springs in September: Weather, Rain Days and 73.4°F Water

The air over Fanning Springs in September averages 88.0°F. The water leaving the vent was 73.4°F when the USGS gauge read it on September 11, 2026, and it sits near that figure in January too. Those 14.6°F of difference decide how the swim feels: a sharp catch of breath at the ladder, then water that holds exactly the same temperature from the first minute to the last.

Against August, the month trades almost no heat for a great deal less rain. The afternoon high slips from 89.9°F to 88.0°F, which nobody feels, while the monthly total falls from 8.10 inches to 5.82 and the count of wet days drops from 11.5 to 7.6. Schools are back, the state park lot holds 130 cars, and a Tuesday looks nothing like a Saturday. The catch is the calendar: September sits inside Atlantic hurricane season.

Come for warm air over cool water with fewer wet days than August, plan the drive to reach the lot before it fills, and take the afternoon storm as a normal feature of the month.

Go for: a 73.4°F spring under 88.0°F air, 7.6 wet days instead of August’s 11.5, and paddling from the park’s single canoe, kayak and tube launch.

Think twice before: booking a non-refundable week inside Atlantic hurricane season, or arriving at midday on a Saturday when the whole park offers 130 spaces.

A word on where the thermometer stands. Every air figure here comes from NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012833, Cross City AP, about 27 miles from the spring. That is a real gauge in a real field rather than a model grid cell, and it is still not standing over the water. The water numbers come from the USGS gauge at the spring itself, station 02323502, and they are instant readings rather than monthly averages.

NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals put September here at an average high of 88.0°F, an average low of 69.8°F and 5.82 inches of rain, measured at the Cross City airport station. Those are thirty-year averages, so a single September can run wetter or drier by whole inches. The number that matters most to a swim day is not an air figure at all: the spring held 73.4°F on the last USGS reading, and a spring does not have seasons.

Rain reaches the ground on roughly one September day in four. Of those, 7.6 days record at least a tenth of an inch and 1.9 days record a full inch or more. Spread 5.82 inches over that few days and the water arrives short and heavy rather than as long gray drizzle. Two afternoons in an average month bring a genuine soaking, and the other twenty-eight bring, at worst, a wet half hour.

The swing from afternoon to dawn is 18.2°F, 88.0 down to 69.8. In a bag that means one towel you can wring out and a second one kept dry for the drive home, water shoes for limestone, a rain shell that folds to nothing, and a thin long-sleeve layer for anyone sitting still on the observation platform after the sun goes. Sunscreen does more work in September than any jacket.

September 15 gives 12 hours 22 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 7:15 a.m. and sunset at 7:37 p.m. local time. By month’s end the evening has shortened again, so a late swim becomes a dusk swim. We could not verify the park’s posted hours, so build the last dip around the light rather than around a gate time we cannot confirm.

How warm is Fanning Springs in September?

September tops out at 88.0°F and bottoms out at 69.8°F on the thirty-year average. That low sits 3.1°F under August’s and 9.9°F over October’s, so the mornings are the first of the year with any give in them. The afternoon high runs 14.6°F above the 73.4°F water, and that gap is why the spring feels cold at two o’clock and merely brisk at nine.

Dress for two different days. A 9 a.m. arrival is shorts and a T-shirt over a swimsuit, towel still folded. By 2 p.m. the air is heavy enough that the shade of the boardwalk becomes the reason to walk it, and the spring is the cooling system. Evening on the bank, 69.8°F with damp hair and a breeze, is the one moment a thin long-sleeve layer is worth having carried.

Frost plays no part in this month. The NOAA normals we read carry no count of freezing nights for September at Cross City, and an average low of 69.8°F sits a long way from one. October’s normal low of 59.9°F is the first cool morning on the calendar. The water holds 73.4°F through both months and through the winter behind them.

How busy is Fanning Springs in September? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

September opens with the school year already running, and that alone reshapes a weekday at the spring. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for this corner of Florida, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can count is capacity: 130 parking spaces, one designated swimming area and five cabins, all of them counted by the state in its 2024 facilities inventory. Those counts set the ceiling on a Saturday in any month of the year.

Booking here follows the parking count rather than a rate calendar. When the 130 spaces fill, the gate closes, so a Saturday that starts at noon carries a real chance of not starting at all. Come in the first hours of the morning, or pick a weekday and skip the question entirely. For a bed, the park counts five cabins in total, so a September weekend needs reserving long before the week of travel. Our Florida lodging guide covers what sits within driving range.

On money we are short of two things, and we would rather say so than guess. We could not verify the park’s entrance fee, so no gate price appears anywhere here. We also could not verify the county lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Florida park fees vary by park and by season, and a price copied from another spring would not transfer to this one. Our Florida cost guide carries the state-level picture.

The one upgrade that changes this particular month is sleeping inside the gate. A cabin puts you at the water while the lot is still half empty, which in a month with 1.9 soaking days also means you can sit a storm out and swim afterward instead of driving home wet. Everything else you might spend more on moves the trip far less than that.

Things to do in Fanning Springs in September

September is where August’s warmth meets a much smaller rain total: 5.82 inches against 8.10, 7.6 wet days against 11.5, and afternoons still at 88.0°F. Swimming and paddling fit into the same day, and October’s 82.2°F afternoons make that a shorter proposition. Manatees are a cold-season story, and we could not verify any count for this spring, so we promise none in September. Our manatee guide handles the winter side.

Fanning Springs State Park is small, and the state counts it precisely. The 2024 Florida DEP inventory lists one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, 715 feet of boardwalk, one observation platform, five cabins and 130 parking spaces. Florida law files the spring under Outstanding Florida Springs, the class set out in Florida Statutes 373.802(5) for the historic first-magnitude springs plus six named individually in the statute. That status governs protection rules rather than visitor facilities.

What September changes is the air above the water, never the water itself. At 88.0°F, the air sits 14.6°F above the surface. Four weeks later the October normal of 82.2°F cuts that gap to 8.8°F, and the same 73.4°F reads less as relief and more as commitment. Nothing at the vent moved between those two months. Only the thermometer over it did.

On what costs nothing extra: we found no separate ticket for the launch, the boardwalk or the observation platform, so once you are past the gate those come with the park. The gate price itself we could not read, because the state park website refused our automated requests on September 11, 2026. Call the park before you budget the day.

Fanning Springs in September: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is 7:15 a.m. in mid-September, so an 8:30 arrival puts you in the lot long before 130 spaces become an issue. Swim first, while the air is still climbing toward 88.0°F. Dry out on the 715 feet of boardwalk between 11 and 1, eat under cover, and hold the early afternoon loose: with 1.9 inch-plus days in the month, that is about a one-in-fifteen chance of a downpour on any given afternoon. Second swim at five, out well before the 7:37 p.m. sunset.

Day two starts at the launch, the single ramp for canoes, kayaks and tubes, and the river moves regardless of what the air is doing. Paddle early for the same reason you swam early. If the sky turns, the observation platform and the boardwalk keep the worst off you, and September’s rain comes in 7.6 wet days out of thirty rather than in long gray stretches. If it settles in for good, our Florida things-to-do guide has the indoor fallbacks and our driving guide has the distances.

Fanning Springs in September vs August and October

Measure August September October
Average high 89.9°F 88.0°F 82.2°F
Average low 72.9°F 69.8°F 59.9°F
Precipitation 8.10 in 5.82 in 2.23 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 11.5 7.6 3.7
Spring water 73.4°F 73.4°F 73.4°F

Line the three up and one row moves far more than the rest. August and September differ by 1.9°F on the afternoon high and 3.1°F on the low, a difference nobody feels. Rain is where they part company: 8.10 inches over 11.5 wet days in August, 5.82 inches over 7.6 in September. October is the genuine break, at 82.2°F days, 59.9°F nights, 2.23 inches and 3.7 wet days. The spring runs 73.4°F through all three.

Shift four weeks later and you buy dry weather with warmth. October takes 5.8°F off the afternoon and 9.9°F off the night, and the swim turns from relief into a decision, since the air-to-water gap narrows from 14.6°F to 8.8°F. Shift four weeks earlier and August hands back the heat along with 3.9 more wet days and a further two and a quarter inches of rain. Our August guide argues that month on its own terms.

Is September a good time to visit Fanning Springs?

Yes, if the swim is the point of the trip. Warm air over 73.4°F water is the whole reason to drive to a spring, and September supplies 88.0°F afternoons with a third fewer wet days than August. No, if your dates are fixed and your booking is non-refundable: the month falls inside Atlantic hurricane season, and our Florida calendar carries the dates. Families tied to the school week also lose the quiet weekday that makes 130 spaces comfortable.

If the answer is no, October is where to move. Rain drops from 5.82 inches to 2.23 and wet days from 7.6 to 3.7, which is the cleanest four-week improvement on the whole calendar here. The price is 5.8°F off the afternoon and nearly ten off the night, enough to make the first minute in 73.4°F water a slower negotiation than it is now.

No other month combines 88.0°F air, 73.4°F water and fewer than eight wet days. August brings the heat and 11.5 wet days with it. October brings the calm and 5.8°F less warmth to stand around in.

The last word

Decide one thing before you turn the key: which morning you intend to be in that lot, because 130 spaces and a single swimming area do not stretch for anybody. The rest of the day bends easily. And the reason the water photographs the way it does has a number of its own: the USGS gauge measured 41 cubic feet per second leaving the vent, replacing the pool faster than a crowd of swimmers can cloud it. Book one of the five cabins if you want that pool at eight in the morning.
