FLORIDA · FANNING SPRINGS · AUGUST
Fanning Springs spends an average August afternoon at 89.9°F, and the spring itself read 73.4°F the last time the USGS gauge was checked. Sixteen and a half degrees separate the air from the water, and that gap is why people drive down to the Suwannee in the hottest stretch of a Florida summer. The air figures come from NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals at Cross City AP, roughly 27 miles (44 km) from the vent. The water figure comes from a gauge sitting in the spring run itself.
What the month charges for that swim is rain and company. NOAA logs 8.10 inches across an average August, with 11.5 days recording at least a tenth of an inch, and the state park works with 130 parking spaces that close the gate once they fill. The rest of the year at this spring lives in our Fanning Springs guide, and the statewide calendar sits in Best Time to Visit Florida.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · AUGUST
Come in August for spring water near 73°F under 89.9°F air, and build the day around 130 parking spaces and a rainy afternoon every other day.
AVG HIGH 89.9°F · AVG LOW 72.9°F · 8.10 INCHES OF RAIN · 13H 14M OF DAYLIGHT ON AUG 15
Go for: swimming at 73.4°F when the air is near 90°F, 715 feet of shaded boardwalk, and evenings that hold light until 8:13 p.m. in mid-month.
Think twice before: betting a single Saturday on the trip: 11.5 days in an average August record measurable rain, and the 130 spaces decide the afternoon more surely than any schedule.

Two sources carry the month: NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals at Cross City AP for the air, and the USGS gauge in the spring run for the water. Every figure here is one or the other, and the 27 miles between them is worth keeping in mind before you take an air number for conditions at the water’s edge.
Fanning Springs weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| August | Normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 89.9°F |
| Average low | 72.9°F |
| Day-night spread | 17.0°F |
| Precipitation | 8.10 inches |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.5 |
| Days with 1 inch or more | 2.4 |
| Daylight on August 15 | 13 hours 14 minutes |
| Spring water at the USGS gauge | 73.4°F |
Every air figure here comes from one real thermometer: NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012833 at Cross City AP, about 27 miles (44 km) from the spring. August there averages 89.9°F by day, 72.9°F at night and 8.10 inches of rain. Those are normals for the air, not for the water. A gridded reanalysis would hand you slightly different numbers for the same month, and we would rather tell you where our thermometer actually stands.
Rain reaches a tenth of an inch or more on 11.5 days of an average August, and 2.4 of those days deliver an inch or more. Measurable rain every other day sounds worse than it plays out. Florida’s wet season runs right through the summer and most of the water arrives after lunch, which leaves the morning as the dependable half of the day. Two or three times in the month, though, an inch-plus afternoon ends the swimming early, so keep a dry shirt in the car.
Between the 89.9°F afternoon and the 72.9°F small hours sits 17 degrees of movement, and none of it goes anywhere cold. Nobody packs a jacket for this. Pack for sun and water instead: a hat, a rash guard for the shoulders, sandals you can swim in, one towel per person per day because the humidity will not dry the first one, and a sealed bag for the phone if you plan to paddle.
August 15 runs 13 hours 14 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 6:58 a.m. and sunset at 8:13 p.m. local time, computed from sunrise-sunset.org. Light that long changes the shape of the day: a storm at three costs you an hour rather than the evening. Put in at six and you finish with light to spare.
How warm is Fanning Springs in August?
Take the month at its two ends and you get 89.9°F and 72.9°F, a 17-degree working range. July sits two tenths of a degree warmer by day, September nearly two degrees cooler. Nothing in the August normals for this station is extreme by Florida standards. The figure most visitors actually care about is not on the NOAA sheet at all, because it belongs to the spring.
Dress the morning in shorts and a T-shirt, and dress the afternoon in whatever you can swim in. The USGS gauge at Fanning Springs, station 02323502, read 73.4°F (23.0°C) on September 11, 2026. That is a single instantaneous reading rather than an average of daily maxima, and the spring holds close to it every day of the year, because a spring has no seasons. The first thirty seconds catch your breath. After that you stay in longer than you planned.
Freezing nights play no part in this month. The NOAA normals we read carry an August average low of 72.9°F and no freeze-day count, so we give none. The coolest water you will touch in a Fanning Springs August is the spring at 73.4°F, and the coolest air is a 72.9°F hour before dawn.
How busy is Fanning Springs in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
August closes the summer school break and sits squarely inside Florida’s wet season, so weekend traffic at the park holds up to the end of the month. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for this part of the Suwannee valley, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. Statewide price patterns live in what a Florida trip costs.
Florida DEP’s 2024 facilities inventory counts 130 parking spaces at Fanning Springs State Park. No reservation exists for a day-use space, so a hot Saturday is settled by arrival time rather than by planning. The five cabins are the one thing you can hold in advance, and five is a small number in a month like this. We could not verify the state’s booking window from the sources we checked, so reserve as early as your dates allow.
We could not verify a county lodging-tax rate here, so we give no percentage. The entrance fee stands in the same position: floridastateparks.org answered our automated reads on September 11, 2026 with a 403, and fees change by park and by season, so a price copied from another Florida spring would not hold. Call the park before you set a day budget.
One upgrade genuinely changes August, and it is proximity. Sleeping close enough to reach the single designated swimming area in the first hour of the day buys cool water, an empty boardwalk and a parking space, all before the afternoon builds. Anything else on the receipt matters less than that hour. Where to base yourself across the state sits in our where-to-stay guide.
Things to do in Fanning Springs in August

An 89.9°F afternoon changes what a 73.4°F swim feels like. In a cool month the same water is a dare. In August it is the reason for the drive, and that is the thing this month gives that a dry-season visit cannot. Mid-month sunset at 8:13 p.m. adds a second window, so an afternoon of rain that clears by five still leaves time to get back in.
Inside Fanning Springs State Park, the state’s 2024 inventory counts one designated swimming area, one launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, 715 feet of boardwalk, one observation platform, five cabins and those 130 parking spaces. Florida Statutes 373.802(5) defines a protected class called Outstanding Florida Springs, covering every historic first-magnitude spring as determined by the Florida Geological Survey, plus six named by hand in the law. Our sources do not tell us whether Fanning Springs sits on that list today, so we make no claim.
Across the year those counts stay put while the air moves around them. September averages 88.0°F, July 90.1°F, August 89.9°F, and the gauge holds near 73.4°F through all three. The 16.5-degree gap between air and water in August is wider than the same walk offers in a cool month, and it is what makes 715 feet of shaded boardwalk worth taking slowly on the way back to the car.
We could not verify an entrance fee, an opening hour or a manatee count, so we promise you no free day and no animal. Nothing in the facilities inventory we read carries a separate charge once you are inside: the boardwalk, the observation platform and the swimming area come with the visit. Manatees belong to the cold months in any case, and that season is covered in our manatee guide.
Fanning Springs in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at the gate. Sunrise lands at 6:58 a.m. in mid-August, and an early arrival settles the parking question before the 130 spaces settle it for you. Swim first, while the water is quiet and the air has not reached 89.9°F. Walk the boardwalk between nine and eleven, eat under cover around noon, and treat two to five in the afternoon as the rain’s slot. Come back at six for a second swim and the last of the 8:13 p.m. light.
Day two belongs to the river. Put a canoe, kayak or tube in at the park’s launch early, while the Suwannee still has shade on it, and be off the water before the sky builds. If it turns, remember that 2.4 days in an average August drop an inch or more, and lightning ends swimming long before rain does. Those hours are the ones to spend in the car, and our getting-around guide has the drive times.
Fanning Springs in August vs July and September
| July | August | September | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 90.1°F | 89.9°F | 88.0°F |
| Average low | 72.5°F | 72.9°F | 69.8°F |
| Precipitation | 7.77 in | 8.10 in | 5.82 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.6 | 11.5 | 7.6 |
| Spring water | Not measured monthly | 73.4°F on Sept 11, 2026 | Not measured monthly |
Set the three months side by side and August reads as July with a little more rain. Highs run 90.1, 89.9 and 88.0°F from July through September, lows 72.5, 72.9 and 69.8°F. Rainfall goes 7.77 inches, 8.10 and 5.82, and the count of days at a tenth of an inch or more falls from 11.6 to 11.5 to 7.6. The gauge in the spring shows no matching swing and reads near 73.4°F in every one of them.
Shifting four weeks later buys 2.28 inches less rain, nearly four fewer wet days and nights 3.1 degrees cooler, and the water you came for does not move by a degree. You give up daylight, the last of the school-holiday window, and an afternoon hot enough to make cold water feel like payment for the drive. September also carries the risk our month-by-month Florida guide treats with the most caution.
Is August a good time to visit Fanning Springs?
Yes for swimmers, tubers and families who want water more than mileage. August hands them 73.4°F water under 89.9°F air, long light and a short walk between the car and the swim. No for anyone planning full days on foot, anyone who needs a dry afternoon to keep a schedule, and anyone who cannot arrive early enough to beat 130 cars to the lot.
If that last line describes your trip, take September instead. It drops the rain total to 5.82 inches, cuts wet days to 7.6 and brings nights down to 69.8°F, all without touching the spring. The trade is a shorter day and the end of the school-holiday window, and the July page next door shows what the other direction costs: 7.77 inches and 11.6 wet days.
One thing August holds that a cooler month cannot is a 16.5-degree drop between the air you walk in and the water you step into, with enough evening light to take it twice in a day.
The last word
Decide your arrival time and the rest of August falls into place behind it. The same USGS gauge that reads 73.4°F also measured 41 cubic feet per second leaving the vent, enough water to replace the pool faster than a hot Saturday can cloud it. Be parked before the heat, keep the middle of the afternoon loose for the 11.5 rainy days, and keep a dry shirt in the car for the drive home.
