ICHETUCKNEE SPRINGS · MAY · FLORIDA
Mid-May afternoons around the Ichetucknee run 86.7°F on the 1991-2020 normals, while the spring itself has no season at all: the water leaving the vent is the same in May as in January. May is the month that gap turns into a reason to drive here, because the air finally gets hot enough to make a constant-temperature river feel like relief rather than a dare.
What May takes away is margin. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection describes as many as 3,000 visitors a day at Ichetucknee Springs State Park in the peak summer months, and the park’s lot holds 909 cars. May sits in the run-up, so weekday mornings are still roomy and Saturdays already are not. The rain works the other way: 2.74 inches falls in an average May, against 7.00 inches in June.

ICHETUCKNEE SPRINGS AT A GLANCE · MAY
May is the month to come if the plan is water: 86.7°F afternoons over a spring that never changes, 2.74 inches of rain against June’s 7.00, and the summer crowd still a few weeks off.
AIR 86.7°F BY DAY · 62.7°F AT DAWN · 4.7 WET DAYS · 909 PARKING SPACES
Go for: tubing and paddling with summer air overhead, 4.7 wet days instead of June’s 9.1, and a parking lot that still has room on a weekday.
Think twice before: arriving late on a Saturday. When the 909 spaces fill, the gate closes, and we could not verify an entrance fee or an opening hour to plan around.

May raises the air temperature, keeps the rain moderate and starts filling the parking lot earlier in the morning. It changes nothing about the water. Florida’s wider calendar and the driving belong elsewhere, in the 12-month view of Florida and our getting-around guide. Every air figure below comes from a single weather station, named in the next section.
Ichetucknee Springs weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days
| May at Ichetucknee Springs | Normal (1991-2020) |
|---|---|
| Average high | 86.7°F |
| Average low | 62.7°F |
| Precipitation | 2.74 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.7 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.9 |
| Daylight on May 15 | 13 hours 43 minutes |
Every air figure here comes from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information monthly normals for 1991-2020, measured at station USW00012833, Cross City AP, about 27 miles from the springs. That is a real thermometer at an airport, not a modeled grid cell, and it sits nearer the coast than the park does. It gives May an average high of 86.7°F, an average low of 62.7°F and 2.74 inches of precipitation. Those normals describe the air above the river, never the river.
Measurable rain, meaning at least 0.10 inch, falls on 4.7 days in an average May, roughly one day in six. Across 31 days that usually reads as a short afternoon build-up rather than a written-off week. A float in light rain is still a float, and what ends one is lightning. Florida storms grow with the day’s heat, so the morning launch is the reliable one and the 4 p.m. launch is the gamble.
Between 86.7°F and 62.7°F there are 24 degrees, and a full day out here touches both ends. A 6:30 a.m. start is genuinely cool, more so once you are wet. Pack a fleece or hoodie you will happily abandon in the car by ten, a hat for the open stretches of trail, and a dry shirt for the evening, because spring water pulls heat out of you faster than 86.7°F air puts it back.
On May 15 the sun comes up at 6:35 a.m. and goes down at 8:19 p.m. local time: 13 hours 43 minutes of daylight. That is enough light for a second run late in the day and a lit walk back to the car afterward. We could not verify the park’s opening and closing hours, so confirm them with the park before you plan anything that finishes near sunset.
How warm is Ichetucknee Springs in May?
Two numbers hold the month: an average high of 86.7°F and an average low of 62.7°F, 24 degrees apart. June’s ends sit closer together, 89.5 and 70.6, a spread of 18.9 degrees. April’s spread is wider than May’s, 25.1 degrees between 80.1 and 55.0.
In practice that means two outfits in one small bag. Early on, a long-sleeve layer over the swimsuit and shoes you can walk in wet. From late morning, when the air climbs toward its 86.7°F peak, sun protection does all the work and the layer stays behind. Anyone sitting still on a tube for two hours in constant-temperature water will want that layer back, whatever the thermometer at the parking lot says.
Freezing nights are not a May event here, and the normals we read carry no freeze count for the month, so we give none. The coolest thing May offers is that 62.7°F average low. As for the spring, the USGS gauge at the vent, station 02322685, measured 23 cubic feet per second when we read it in September 2026, and that constant replacement is why the run stays clear: the water leaves before it can cloud.
How busy is Ichetucknee Springs in May: crowds and prices
By the state’s own account May is the approach rather than the peak. Florida DEP puts summer visitation at as many as 3,000 people a day, and those months come after this one. On the ground the pressure shows up as capacity, not as a rate card. The park has 909 parking spaces. Once they are gone the gate closes, and nothing you arranged in advance reopens it.
We could not verify a reservation system, a gate-opening time or a tube-rental price for the park, so we set no booking window and quote no fee. The lot is what we can count. On a May Saturday the useful lever is your alarm clock rather than a confirmation email: be in line early, or move the visit to a Tuesday, when 909 spaces are plenty instead of a ceiling.
On lodging, our cards are on the table. We could not verify a tourist-development tax rate for the counties around the springs, so no percentage appears here and no month gets called cheap or expensive on rates we never saw. What a Florida week costs in broader terms sits in our trip cost guide, which works at the state scale rather than the spring’s.
The one place extra money genuinely changes May is the bed. A room close enough to put you at the gate first thing converts the entire day, because the constraint is the lot and the lot empties overnight. The same money spent on gear buys nothing: a tube floats identically at 8 a.m. and at noon, and at noon you may not be parked at all. Where to stay in Florida handles the wider choice.
Things to do in Ichetucknee Springs in May

May is when the contrast does the work. The air reaches 86.7°F, the spring stays exactly where it always is, and a river that feels bracing in winter feels engineered in May. April’s 80.1°F afternoons do not quite deliver that effect. June out-heats May by 2.8 degrees but starts subtracting afternoons, with 9.1 wet days and 7.00 inches of rain in the average month.
Everything happens inside Ichetucknee Springs State Park, and the state has counted the contents. The 2024 facilities inventory lists 4 canoe, kayak and tube launches, 2.8 miles of paddling trail, 4.2 miles of hiking trail, 1,472 feet of boardwalk and 2 designated swimming areas. Florida DEP’s springs pages describe three separate canoe and tube launches and more than seven miles of swiftly flowing river. The state’s two counts of the launches disagree, so plan around three.
May changes the air over all of it and none of the water under it. Dawn to mid-afternoon the air moves 24 degrees while the run holds steady, which makes the same 4.2 miles of trail two different walks: shaded and cool at seven, hard work by two. Shade is the scheduling tool in May, and the 1,472 feet of boardwalk and the two swim areas are where a hot hour goes.
On admission we have to be plain. We could not verify an entrance fee, an opening hour or a manatee count for the park, because the state parks site returned an error to our automated reads on September 11, 2026. So nothing here gets called free and no admission is quoted. One legal detail is public: Florida Statutes 373.802(5) defines a protected class called Outstanding Florida Springs, covering every historic first-magnitude spring plus six more named in the law.
Ichetucknee Springs in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise on May 15 is 6:35 a.m., and the first hour after the gate opens is when the 909 spaces still exist. Get on the water first, with the air near 62.7°F and the river feeling warm by comparison. Eat late morning, dry off, then hand the hot stretch, roughly noon to four at 86.7°F, to the boardwalk and the shaded trail. Daylight holds until 8:19 p.m., so a second run before dinner is real.
Day two takes the paddle, 2.8 miles of trail from whichever launch has room, and a slow morning on the 4.2 miles of walking. If the sky builds, and 4.7 days in an average May bring measurable rain, flip the order: walk early, watch the radar, keep the water for the gap. If a whole day is written off, the springs are a poor place to wait one out, and drier options across the state are in things to do in Florida.
Ichetucknee Springs in May vs April and June
| Measure | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.1°F | 86.7°F | 89.5°F |
| Average low | 55.0°F | 62.7°F | 70.6°F |
| Precipitation | 2.90 in | 2.74 in | 7.00 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.1 | 4.7 | 9.1 |
| Spring water temperature | not verified | not verified | not verified |
Set side by side, the three months separate cleanly. May’s 86.7°F average high stands 6.6 degrees above April’s 80.1 and 2.8 below June’s 89.5. The nights climb faster than the days: 62.7°F against April’s 55.0 and June’s 70.6, a 15.6-degree ladder across eight weeks. Rain is where May comes out ahead, at 2.74 inches, slightly under April’s 2.90 and about two fifths of June’s 7.00, with 4.7 wet days against June’s 9.1.
Move four weeks back and you gain quiet and lose heat. April’s 80.1°F afternoons and 55.0°F dawns make constant-temperature water a colder proposition, with the rain essentially unchanged at 2.90 inches, and our April guide makes that case in full. Move four weeks forward and the afternoons gain 2.8 degrees while the wet days nearly double, from 4.7 to 9.1, and the summer crowd the state counts at up to 3,000 a day arrives with them.
Is May a good time to visit Ichetucknee Springs?
Yes, for anyone whose plan is water. May hands you summer-grade afternoons with well under half of June’s rainfall, and the spring behaves in May precisely as it behaves in August. It is a weaker month for two groups: anyone who needs a Saturday parking space without an early start, given the 909-space ceiling, and anyone who came for cool walking, because 4.2 miles under an 86.7°F sky in Florida humidity is not a stroll.
If that second description fits, April is the month to take instead: 80.1°F by day, 55.0 at night, 2.90 inches of rain and the summer curve not yet started. The cost is the swim. Water that feels perfect against 86.7°F air feels sharp against 80.1, and the trade is worth making only if the trail matters more to you than the float.
No other month pairs an 86.7°F afternoon with just 4.7 wet days: June brings more heat and roughly doubles the rain, April keeps the dry weather and takes back 6.6 degrees.
The last word
Book a weekday, be at the gate in the first hour, and the 909 spaces stop being the story of your visit. One more figure worth carrying: across the 1991-2020 record, only 0.9 day in an average May delivered an inch of rain or more, so the odds on any single date you pick are strongly in your favor. Take a Tuesday, pack a layer for the 62.7°F dawn, and float twice.
