ICHETUCKNEE SPRINGS · APRIL · NORTH FLORIDA
The trick at Ichetucknee in April is a contrast you get for only a few weeks. The spring run holds the same temperature all year, and the air above it does not: the nearest official thermometer averages 80.1°F in the afternoon and 55.0°F before dawn. You can walk the woods in a fleece at seven and be floating by noon, on what Florida’s environmental agency calls more than seven miles of swiftly flowing river.
Summer has not arrived yet, and that matters at a park the same agency describes drawing as many as 3,000 visitors a day in the peak months, with 909 parking spaces to hold them. What April costs you is the morning. Dawn sits near 55.0°F, and about one April in ten records a night at freezing.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ICHETUCKNEE SPRINGS · APRIL
April gives you the warmest air the park has had since fall, 80.1°F by afternoon, over water that never changes, and a 909-space lot that is far easier to get into now than in July.
NOAA NORMALS 1991–2020 · 80.1°F / 55.0°F · 4.1 WET DAYS · 909 PARKING SPACES
Go for: tubing and paddling in air that has reached 80.1°F, plus 4.2 miles of hiking trail you can still walk at midday.
Think twice before: planning a dawn swim. April mornings average 55.0°F at the nearest official station, and we could not verify a water temperature for the run itself.

A word on what we could and could not verify. The air figures come from a real instrument at Cross City AP, about 27 miles from the spring. The water figures are missing: we found no temperature reading for the Ichetucknee run, and no entrance fee and no opening hour either, so none of the three appears anywhere below.
Ichetucknee Springs weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| April normal (1991–2020) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 80.1°F (26.7°C) |
| Average low | 55.0°F (12.8°C) |
| Precipitation | 2.90 inches |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.1 |
| Days with 1 inch or more | 0.7 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 0.1 |
| Daylight on April 15 | 12 hours 58 minutes |
Those normals come from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, the 1991–2020 monthly set for station USW00012833 at Cross City AP. April averages 80.1°F by afternoon, 55.0°F at dawn and 2.90 inches of rain over the month. They are station normals, read off a thermometer rather than modeled in a reanalysis grid cell, and that thermometer sits about 27 miles from the vent. Take them as the weather of the drive, the parking lot and the boardwalk, not of the water.
Measurable rain lands about one day in seven: 4.1 days in an average April record at least a tenth of an inch. Only 0.7 of a day reaches a full inch, which works out to roughly seven Aprils in ten with one genuine soaking. Rain does not cancel a float, since you are already wet. It cancels the picnic and turns the trail sloppy. Lightning is the thing that gets everyone out of the water, and it does so regardless of the rainfall total.
The two normals sit 25.1 degrees apart, and the whole gap happens inside one day. Pack for both ends: a fleece and long pants for the first hour after sunrise, shorts and sun cover for the afternoon. A dry towel matters more here in April than in July, because you climb out of unheated water into morning air far closer to the 55.0°F low than to the 80.1°F high.
On April 15 the sun rises at 7:02 a.m. and sets at 7:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, and sunrise-sunset.org puts the day at 12 hours 58 minutes. That late sunset changes the shape of an afternoon: a float launched at four still finishes well inside daylight, with time left for the drive out.
How warm is Ichetucknee Springs in April?
Two numbers carry the month: 80.1°F and 55.0°F, separated by 25.1 degrees. Neither is extreme by Florida standards. April runs 5.2 degrees warmer in the afternoon than March’s 74.9°F and 6.6 degrees cooler than May’s 86.7°F, so it lands almost exactly between its neighbors.
In practice that means two outfits, not one. Morning: long sleeves, closed shoes for the walk to the launch, something dry set aside in the car. Afternoon: swim gear and a hat, because the same day that began at 55 degrees finishes near 80. Water shoes are worth packing for a limestone bottom, and a second towel is worth packing for whoever forgets theirs.
Freezing nights are rare but not impossible: the Cross City record shows 0.1 nights at or below 32°F in an average April, roughly one April in ten. As for the water, we could not verify a temperature for the Ichetucknee run, and we will not borrow one from a neighboring vent. What the sources do establish is that the spring has no season at all, so nothing you read about April changes the swim itself.
How busy is Ichetucknee Springs in April? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection states the busy season plainly: as many as 3,000 visitors a day during peak summer months. April is ahead of that curve. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for the area, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive, and any page that ranks April on price is guessing.
What April really changes is the lot, not the calendar. The state counts 909 parking spaces, and when they are gone the gate closes. On an April Saturday that makes arrival time the decision of the day. On a Tuesday it rarely comes up at all. We could not verify an entry reservation system, so we will not send you booking a slot weeks ahead. For beds in this corner of north Florida, our where-to-stay guide handles the regions and trip cost the budget.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the counties around the park, so no percentage appears. Hotel bills in this state carry more than one tax line, and the local part differs from county to county. Read the total on your own confirmation rather than trusting a round number from us.
The one place money changes an April day is what you bring: your own tube, your own cooler, your own dry clothes. We could not verify the park’s entrance fee, its rental prices or its opening hour, because floridastateparks.org refuses automated reads, and fees vary by park and by season, so a price you saw quoted for another spring does not transfer here.
Things to do in Ichetucknee Springs in April

April is when both halves of the park fit into one visit. The 4.2 miles of hiking trail are walkable through the middle of the day at 80.1°F in a way they are not at May’s 86.7°F, and the water is exactly as cold as it will be in August. In July, the same day belongs to the river alone.
All of it sits inside Ichetucknee Springs State Park. The state’s 2024 facilities inventory counts 4 canoe, kayak and tube launches, 2.8 miles of paddling trail, 4.2 miles of hiking trail, 1,472 feet of boardwalk and 2 designated swimming areas, served by those 909 parking spaces. The department’s own Visit a Spring page says three separate canoe and tube launches and more than seven miles of swiftly flowing river, so read the launch count as three or four depending on which state document you open.
None of that inventory shifts with the season. The air does, and that is the whole difference. A 55.0°F dawn on the boardwalk and an 80.1°F afternoon on the same planks are four hours apart in April. Walk the boardwalk at first light and it is a jacket walk. Come back at four and it is a shaded corridor to a swim, with three hours of daylight still in hand.
One legal detail the state publishes plainly: Statute 373.802(5) defines a class called Outstanding Florida Springs, covering every historic first-magnitude spring as the Florida Geological Survey determines them, plus six more named by hand in the text. As for what an April visit costs, we could not verify which parts of the park carry a fee and which do not, so we name nothing here as free.
Ichetucknee Springs in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Be out of the car by 7:30 with the fleece on, since mid-April sunrise is 7:02 and the air is still near its 55.0°F low. Take the boardwalk first, all 1,472 feet, while the woods are cool. Swim mid-morning at one of the two designated areas as the temperature climbs. Float in the early afternoon, when 80.1°F makes getting out of cold water pleasant. Walk part of the 4.2 miles at five, with the 7:59 sunset still ahead.
Day two goes to the 2.8 miles of paddling trail and to whichever launch you skipped. If the sky turns, remember the shape of April rain: 4.1 days with a tenth of an inch, 0.7 with an inch or more. A passing shower changes nothing on the river. A thunderstorm ends the water day for everyone, so keep the hiking trail as the fallback, or point the car at St. Augustine two hours east.
Ichetucknee Springs in April vs March and May
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 74.9°F | 80.1°F | 86.7°F |
| Average low | 49.6°F | 55.0°F | 62.7°F |
| Precipitation | 3.53 in | 2.90 in | 2.74 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.6 | 4.1 | 4.7 |
| Spring water temperature | not verified | not verified | not verified |
Across the three months the afternoon normal climbs 11.8 degrees, from 74.9°F to 86.7°F, and April lands close to the midpoint at 80.1. The nights move further apart: 49.6, then 55.0, then 62.7. Rain is where April quietly wins, at 2.90 inches and 4.1 wet days against March’s 3.53 inches and 4.6 days and May’s 4.7 days.
Shift four weeks back and March hands you 5.2 fewer degrees in the afternoon and 0.63 more inch of rain, in exchange for a quieter river. Our March guide runs those numbers in full. Shift forward and May adds 6.6 degrees by day and 7.7 at dawn, which turns the cold water from a decision into a relief, at the price of moving toward the summer months the state describes filling the park with up to 3,000 people a day.
Is April a good time to visit Ichetucknee Springs?
Yes for most people, and the spread is the reason: an 80.1°F afternoon over water that holds its temperature all year, 4.1 wet days in thirty, and the summer crowd still weeks away. Say no if you need warm air at dawn. A 55.0°F morning is a real morning, one April in ten records a freeze at Cross City, and families with small swimmers often want the other end of the thermometer.
If the chill is the deal-breaker, May is the month to take: 86.7°F afternoons, 62.7°F lows and 2.74 inches of rain on paper. The trade is company, since May leads into the season the department describes peaking at 3,000 visitors a day against 909 spaces. Anyone chasing the emptiest river of the three should look at March and accept a 74.9°F afternoon. Our statewide calendar puts both in context.
April alone lets you hike 4.2 miles at midday and float the same afternoon without either half being a compromise.
The last word
Take the weekday if your calendar allows it, and set the alarm for that 7:02 a.m. sunrise either way. One number we have not used yet comes from the only gauge pointed at the spring instead of the sky: USGS station 02322685 measured 23 cubic feet per second leaving the vent on September 11, 2026, a single instantaneous reading rather than a monthly average. That rate of replacement is why the run stays clear, and the vent does the same thing in April as in August. The air is the only variable, and in April the air is 80.1°F.
