Fanning Springs in April: Weather, 73°F Water and Park Crowds

April is the month the air finally catches up with the water at Fanning Springs. The nearest official thermometer puts the average high at 80.1°F, while the spring itself read 73.4°F when the USGS gauge was checked on September 11, 2026, and it reads close to that every day of the year. The result is a swim that still makes you catch your breath on entry and an afternoon warm enough to dry you off on the boardwalk.

What the date buys you is the dry tail of Florida’s dry season: 2.90 inches of rain across the month against March’s 3.53, and 12 hours 57 minutes of daylight on the 15th. What it costs you is the cool morning that March hands out for free. If you are still deciding which half of the Florida year to travel in, our month-by-month verdict for the state sets the frame.

April is the driest of the three spring months at 2.90 inches, with an average high of 80.1°F over water that sits near 73.4°F all year, so the entry is brisk and the drying off is easy.

Think twice before: counting on a late gate. We could not verify the park’s opening hours, its entrance fee or any manatee count, so plan around the 130-space lot instead.

Every figure here that describes the air comes from one real thermometer: NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012833, Cross City Airport, about 27 miles from the spring. April there averages a high of 80.1°F and a low of 55.0°F, with 2.90 inches of rain across the month. The basin is a separate instrument and a separate story. The USGS gauge in the spring read 73.4°F on September 11, 2026, and that reading barely moves across a year.

Measurable rain shows up 4.1 days out of thirty at the 0.10-inch threshold, close to one day in seven. Only 0.7 day brings an inch or more, putting the true washout at well under a day a month. In practice you get a gray morning and a clearing by mid-afternoon far more often than a lost day, and the swim is untouched either way.

Between 80.1°F and 55.0°F sits a 25.1°F spread, and a bag packed for only one end of it will be wrong twice a day. Bring a fleece and long pants for the 7 am boardwalk, a swimsuit and a fast-drying towel for the afternoon, and sleeves for the hour after the sun leaves the water. A mid-April night near the normal low feels colder straight out of a 73.4°F spring than the number looks on paper.

Daylight on April 15 runs 12 hours 57 minutes, with sunrise at 7:03 am and sunset at 8:00 pm local time, converted from the 11:03 and 00:00 UTC our source publishes. Evening light that long changes the shape of a day here. The swim no longer has to happen before lunch. One caveat: we could not verify the park’s closing hour, so read 8:00 pm as the end of the light rather than the end of access.

How warm is Fanning Springs in April?

The month runs from a 55.0°F average low to an 80.1°F average high, 25.1°F apart. Both neighbors are narrower at one end or the other: May lifts nights to 62.7°F and takes the chill out of dawn, March holds them at 49.6°F and keeps it. April sits in the middle and gives you both climates inside a single day, which is either the charm or the catch depending on your packing.

Translated into clothing: at sunrise you want the fleece, by 1 pm you want shade. Nobody needs a coat in an average April here, and yet the first hour of the day is genuinely cool, as is the last hour after a swim. Keep a dry layer in the car rather than the day bag. The walk back from the swim area is short, and the wet walk back is shorter than the wait to warm up.

Freezing nights are close to gone by April at Cross City. The normals count 0.1 nights at 32°F or below in an average April, roughly one April in ten seeing a single one. That is airport data 27 miles away, and cold air pools where it likes, so a river-bottom site can run colder than the official low. Nothing in that number argues for winter gear.

How busy is Fanning Springs in April? Crowds and hotel prices

April closes Florida’s dry season, the November-to-April half of the year that fills the state’s calendar. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for this corner of north Florida, so we crown no month expensive and quote no nightly figure. What we can count is capacity. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s 2024 facilities inventory puts 130 parking spaces at Fanning Springs State Park, and a lot that size is what decides a warm Saturday.

Five cabins make up the entire overnight inventory inside the park, per that same state inventory. That number shapes an April weekend more than any rate does. We could not verify the reservation window or the nightly price, so check the state’s booking system before you fix your dates, and treat the wider Florida lodging picture as your fallback if the five are gone.

We could not verify a local lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Florida counties add a tourist development tax on top of state sales tax at rates each county sets for itself, and quoting one we have not read would be a guess dressed as a fact. Ask the property, or read the line on the confirmation.

If you spend up on one thing in April, make it a night inside the gate instead of a motel and a morning drive. The 130-space lot and the single designated swimming area are shared by everyone who turns up, and being on site for the 7:03 am sunrise is the only upgrade the numbers actually support. A cabin also puts the boardwalk under your feet before the day warms.

Things to do in Fanning Springs in April

April lets you do the cold thing and the warm thing on the same day. The average high stands 6.7°F above the spring’s own 73.4°F, enough to make the climb out comfortable without turning midday into a heat problem. In March the air averages just 1.5°F above the water, so getting out is the unpleasant part. In May the 13.3°F gap makes the entry a shock and the shade a requirement.

Fanning Springs State Park is the whole itinerary, and the state has counted it: 715 feet of boardwalk, one observation platform, one designated swimming area, one launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, five cabins, 130 parking spaces. The USGS gauge measured 41 cubic feet per second leaving the vent on September 11, 2026, and that volume is why the basin stays clear, since the water is replaced faster than it can cloud.

None of those counts change with the season, and neither does the water. Between March and May the air moves 11.8°F, from a 74.9°F average high to 86.7°F, while the spring holds near 73.4°F through all of it. That moving air is the only variable in the day, which is why the same launch, the same platform and the same swim area feel like three different outings across three months.

On what costs nothing in April, we have to leave you without an answer. Florida’s state park website returned a 403 to our automated reads on September 11, 2026, so we could not confirm the fee schedule, any free day, or whether the boardwalk and observation platform sit inside or outside a pay gate. The 715 feet and the one platform are counted by the state. Their price is not.

Fanning Springs in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on mid-April light. Sunrise lands at 7:03 am local time on the 15th, and the first hour belongs to the boardwalk: 715 feet of it plus the observation platform, walked in a fleece while the air sits near the 55.0°F normal low. Park by mid-morning, because the 130 spaces go to whoever arrives. Swim from about 1 pm, when the air is closest to the 80.1°F normal high. Save the paddle launch for after 4 pm and you still have three hours of light.

Day two flips the order: launch first while the run is quiet, swim at midday, walk the boardwalk at golden hour with sunset at 8:00 pm. Rain matters less here than it would at a beach. With 4.1 measurable days in an average April and only 0.7 day of an inch or more, the odds sit with you, and the spring holds 73.4°F wet or dry. Trade the platform for a longer swim if a front parks overhead, then walk once it clears.

Fanning Springs in April vs March and May

Average low 49.6°F 55.0°F 62.7°F
Precipitation 3.53 in 2.90 in 2.74 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 4.6 4.1 4.7

Highs step up 5.2°F from March to April, then another 6.6°F into May. Nights climb faster still: 49.6°F, 55.0°F, 62.7°F. Rain runs the other direction, 3.53 inches in March down to 2.90 in April and 2.74 in May, with April carrying the fewest measurable days of the three at 4.1 against 4.6 and 4.7. All three columns share one constant, the spring near 73.4°F, because a spring has no season and the air above it does.

Shift four weeks earlier and you gain a quieter, cooler morning and lose the warm exit: March’s average high is only 1.5°F above the water, plus you take on 0.63 more inches of rain. Shift four weeks later and you gain 6.6°F of afternoon and nights you can sit outside in, and you lose the dry-day edge along with any hope of a cool midday. Both trades are real, and neither touches the swim itself.

Is April a good time to visit Fanning Springs?

Yes, for anyone who wants to walk and swim in the same twenty-four hours. The April air averages 6.7°F above the spring’s own temperature, warm enough to make the climb out easy without making the boardwalk a chore. No, for cold-water skeptics. At 73.4°F the basin reads the same in April as in August, and no month on the calendar will warm it for you.

Prefer May if that first entry is the sticking point. An 86.7°F average high stands 13.3°F above the water, and contrast is what makes a spring feel generous rather than bracing. The bill for that comes in at 0.6 more measurable rain days and nights that no longer drop to 55.0°F, a comfort in a cabin and a nuisance if you were counting on cool sleeping.

Of the three months, only April pairs the fewest measurable rain days, 4.1, with an average low of 55.0°F that still makes an evening outside pleasant rather than warm.

The last word

Book April if the plan is two days rather than one, because a dawn on the 715 feet of boardwalk and a one-o’clock swim are two different climates inside the same 25.1°F spread, and no other month of the spring hands you both so cleanly. One thing our sources could not settle: Florida law keeps a protected class called Outstanding Florida Springs, defined in statute 373.802(5) as every historic first-magnitude spring plus six more named by hand, and we could not confirm which side of that line Fanning Springs falls on. Ask at the ranger station, because our reading of the statute did not answer it.
