FANNING SPRINGS · FLORIDA · THE MAY GUIDE
May is the month the air finally outruns the water. The official normal high for May is 86.7°F and the normal low 62.7°F, while the spring itself read 73.4°F when the USGS gauge was checked on September 11, 2026. Thirteen degrees separate an afternoon in the parking lot from the first step into the swim area, and that gap is the whole reason people drive here in late spring.
The month gives you summer heat without summer rain: 2.74 inches across 4.7 wet days, against June’s 7.00 inches on 9.1 days. What it takes away is elbow room, because the state counts 130 parking spaces and a full lot closes the gate. Where to sleep and how to drive there belong to our lodging guide and our getting-around guide.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · MAY
May puts 86.7°F afternoons over 73.4°F water with only 4.7 wet days, so go, and go early enough to park.
AVERAGE HIGH 86.7°F · 4.7 WET DAYS · 130 PARKING SPACES
Go for: the widest air-to-water gap before the rain turns, 13 hours 42 minutes of daylight on May 15, and a swim that starts at 73.4°F.
Think twice before: arriving at midday on a weekend. With 130 parking spaces counted by the state, the lot is the limit, not the hours.

One caveat before the numbers start. Every air figure here is a NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 normal from a real thermometer at Cross City AP, about 27 miles from the spring, not a grid-cell reanalysis and not a reading taken under the cypress. The water figure is different in kind: a single instantaneous USGS gauge reading, not a monthly average of daily maxima, and not something the calendar moves much anyway.

NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals give May an average high of 86.7°F, an average low of 62.7°F and 2.74 inches of rain. Those come from the weather station at Cross City AP, the nearest official record, so treat them as the regional air rather than a measurement of the riverbank shade, where the canopy and the spring run both knock the felt temperature down.
Rain arrives on 4.7 days in an average May, measurable wet roughly one day in six. Only 0.9 of a day brings an inch or more, so most Mays deliver a single real soaking and the rest is the kind of shower that matters very little to somebody already standing chest-deep in 73.4°F water. Compare that with June, when 9.1 days cross the 0.10-inch line.
The gap between those two normals is 24.0°F, wide enough to change what goes in the bag. A 62.7°F dawn on a wet boardwalk wants a long-sleeve layer and a second towel, while the 3 p.m. version of the same day wants shade, water and a hat. Pack for both ends, because in May you will meet both inside twelve hours.
On May 15 the sun rises at 6:37 a.m. and sets at 8:18 p.m. local time, giving 13 hours 42 minutes of daylight. That buys a genuine two-shift day: an early swim, a long lunch away from the heat, and a second float with light still on the water well past seven.
How warm is Fanning Springs in May?
Two numbers frame the month: 86.7°F at the top of an average day, 62.7°F at the bottom, a swing of 24.0 degrees. The spring sits stubbornly in between. At 73.4°F on the September 2026 reading, the water runs 13.3°F below the average May afternoon, which is the difference between a plunge that stings in March and one that simply resets you in May.
In practice, mornings still ask for something with sleeves and afternoons ask for almost nothing. Get in before ten and the water feels sharp for about ninety seconds. Get in at four, after a 24-degree climb, and the same 73.4°F feels engineered. Bring a towel that dries, since air near 87°F does a lot of the work for you.
On freezing nights we have to hold back: the normals we read give monthly averages only, not a count of nights at or below 32°F, and we did not obtain that count. What the record does say is that the May average low is 62.7°F, twenty-eight degrees clear of freezing, and the spring’s own temperature barely registers the seasons at all.
How busy is Fanning Springs in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for this corner of north Florida, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What can be counted is capacity. The state’s own facilities inventory lists 130 parking spaces at Fanning Springs State Park and one designated swimming area. When the lot fills, the gate closes, and that arithmetic is the real May calendar.
On site the whole lodging inventory is five cabins. We could not verify how far ahead they book, so we will not invent a number of weeks. Treat the five as the warning itself and settle that choice long before you settle the drive. Anything off site sits in the broader Florida cost picture rather than in a springs-specific rate.
On the tax question we have to be plain: we could not verify a local lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage here. Anyone budgeting a multi-night trip should assume a state and local add-on exists on the room line and confirm it with the property at booking rather than trust a figure copied from another Florida county.
Paying more changes exactly one thing in May, and it is not comfort. It is arrival time. A cabin puts you inside the gate before the 130 spaces are spoken for on a hot Saturday, which day visitors can only match by showing up close to opening.
Things to do in Fanning Springs in May

May is the last month of the year that pairs summer air with spring rain. April’s 80.1°F afternoons leave the 73.4°F water feeling like a dare rather than a reward, and June brings 7.00 inches of rain over 9.1 wet days. Sitting between them, May offers heat that makes the swim obvious and a sky that mostly stays out of the way.
Fanning Springs State Park is countable, and the state counted it: 715 feet of boardwalk, one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, one observation platform, five cabins and 130 parking spaces. The vent pushes 41 cubic feet per second out into the run, and that volume is why the water stays clear: it is replaced faster than it can cloud.
None of those numbers move with the month except one. The spring holds near 73.4°F in January and in August alike, while the air above it climbs from 80.1°F in April to 86.7°F in May and 89.5°F in June. The season is not in the water at all. It lives in the contrast, and in May that contrast is 13.3 degrees.
On what is free, we will not guess. We could not read the park’s fee schedule or its opening hours, and no manatee count for this spring was available to us either, so we promise nothing at zero dollars and no animals on a date. For the manatee season across the state, our manatee guide handles the calendar.
Fanning Springs in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is at 6:37 a.m., so be at the lot early while the air is still near 62.7°F and the 130 spaces are open. Swim first, when the water bites a little. Walk the 715 feet of boardwalk to the observation platform mid-morning, break for the hottest stretch around 3 p.m., then return for a second float that can last until the 8:18 p.m. sunset.
Day two belongs to the launch. Put a kayak or a tube in from the single ramp, use the cooler first hours, and keep the afternoon loose. If the sky turns, remember the shape of May rain: 4.7 wet days, only 0.9 of them carrying an inch or more. Wait out a shower, or trade the paddle for the drive and add a night from the wider Florida route.
Fanning Springs in May vs April and June
| Measure | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.1°F | 86.7°F | 89.5°F |
| Average low | 55.0°F | 62.7°F | 70.6°F |
| Precipitation | 2.90 in | 2.74 in | 7.00 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.1 | 4.7 | 9.1 |
| Spring water | no seasonal change | 73.4°F at the gauge | no seasonal change |
Across the three months the air climbs 9.4 degrees by day and 15.6 by night, while the spring does not budge. Rainfall behaves oddly: April actually totals slightly more than May, 2.90 inches against 2.74, but spreads it over fewer days, 4.1 against 4.7. June is where the pattern breaks, more than doubling May’s total to 7.00 inches and nearly doubling its wet-day count.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain quieter 55.0°F nights and lose the heat that makes 73.4°F water feel like a gift, as our April page lays out. Shift four weeks later and you gain warm 70.6°F evenings and lose more than four extra wet days per month. May keeps June’s afternoons without June’s sky.
Is May a good time to visit Fanning Springs?
Yes for swimmers, paddlers and anyone who wants heat with a cure attached. An 86.7°F afternoon and 73.4°F water is the year’s cleanest trade. No for two groups: anyone who needs a guaranteed quiet lot on a Saturday, since 130 spaces is the ceiling, and anyone whose plan depends on sleeping on site, because five cabins is a small door to walk through.
If that is you, move to April rather than June. April keeps rain days at 4.1 and nights at 55.0°F, and its 80.1°F afternoons still beat the water by nearly seven degrees. June is the month to avoid on this count: 7.00 inches and 9.1 wet days rearrange plans far more often than a 2.8-degree bump in the high repays. The statewide pattern sits in our Florida timing guide.
No other month puts a 24-degree daily swing, 13 hours 42 minutes of daylight and fewer than five wet days around water that never changes temperature.
The last word
Book the cabin or set an alarm: in May the decision that matters is what time your car reaches the lot, not what you pack. One more thing worth knowing while you float. Florida law keeps a protected category called Outstanding Florida Springs, defined in Statute 373.802(5) as every historic first-magnitude spring identified by the Florida Geological Survey plus six more written into the statute by name. We did not verify which of those lists carries Fanning Springs, and the 41 cubic feet per second leaving the vent will keep running either way.
