HOMOSASSA SPRINGS, FLORIDA · JUNE · 1991-2020 NORMALS
June hands Homosassa Springs two very different temperatures on the same morning. The air climbs to an average high of 90.2°F. The spring underneath it sat at 74.3°F when the USGS gauge was read on September 11, 2026, and it reads close to that every day of the year. That gap of roughly sixteen degrees is the month’s whole argument, and it comes attached to 7.91 inches of rain.
What June takes away is the dry, mild spring you would have had four weeks earlier: May averages 3.35 inches of rain against June’s 7.91, and 4.4 wet days against 10.9. What June gives back is daylight, 14 hours and 1 minute of it on the 15th, and a sunset that holds off until 8:31 p.m. Whether that trade works depends on how early you are willing to be at the gate.

JUNE AT A GLANCE · HOMOSASSA SPRINGS
June is a morning month here: warm, bright until late, and wet enough after lunch that the afternoon needs a roof, while the spring itself holds near 74°F no matter what the sky does.
AVG HIGH 90.2°F · 10.9 RAIN DAYS · SPRING NEAR 74°F · 197 PARKING SPACES
Go for: wildlife watching from 3,000 feet of boardwalk in the cool hours, two observation platforms, and the longest evenings of the year.
Think twice before: planning to swim inside the park. Florida’s facility inventory lists no designated swimming area and no canoe, kayak or tube launch there.

The normals above come from a thermometer, not a model: NOAA NCEI monthly normals for 1991-2020, station USW00012818 at Brooksville Hernando County Airport, about 27 miles (44 km) inland from the spring. June there averages a high of 90.2°F, a low of 69.9°F and 7.91 inches of rain. All of that describes the air. The water in the spring run has no season at all, and the distance between those two numbers is why anyone drives here in summer.
Measurable rain, meaning at least 0.10 inch, falls on 10.9 days in an average June, or roughly one day in three. An inch or more lands on 2.5 days, about one day in twelve. In practice that reads as a Florida wet-season afternoon rather than a washed-out week: the morning is usable, the sky stacks up after lunch, and an open boardwalk over water is the last place to be when lightning arrives. You lose two hours, at a fairly predictable time of day.
Between the 69.9°F night and the 90.2°F afternoon there are 20.3 degrees, and none of them call for a sweater. Pack for wet instead of for cold: a light rain shell that breathes, a second shirt for after the storm, a hat, and shoes you do not mind soaking. A fleece will ride in the bag untouched, which is not true of the May trip, when nights average 62.6°F.
On June 15 the sun rises at 6:30 a.m. and sets at 8:31 p.m. local time, 14 hours and 1 minute apart, the longest stretch of the year. The useful consequence is at the front: being out at seven costs you nothing in comfort and buys the coolest hour on the boardwalk. The light at the other end lasts well past dinner.
How warm is Homosassa Springs in June?
Averaged across the month, days top out at 90.2°F and nights bottom out at 69.9°F, a spread of 20.3 degrees. May runs a wider swing, 88.1 down to 62.6, a spread of 25.5. June is therefore not much hotter by day than May, only 2.1 degrees, but it is 7.3 degrees warmer overnight. The humidity of the wet season rides along with those warmer nights.
At seven in the morning, near 70°F, a T-shirt is enough and the walking is pleasant. By two in the afternoon the same outfit is doing hard work at 90°F, and water, a hat and a shaded bench matter more than any itinerary. Wet-season humidity means clothes do not dry between the storm and the evening, so a change of shirt in the car is a small comfort that pays.
The normals we read carry no count of freezing nights for June, and with an average low of 69.9°F the question does not arise here. The only cold you will meet is in the run: at 74.3°F the water is cool enough to catch your breath on the first step, never cold enough to keep anyone out.
How busy is Homosassa Springs in June? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
June opens the American school summer and sits in the first half of Florida’s wet season, so the state’s summer pattern is already running when you arrive. Where the month falls on the price curve, we cannot tell you: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for this corner of the Nature Coast, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. The number that does sort a June Saturday is 197, the parking spaces Florida counts at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. When the lot fills, the gate closes.
How far ahead to book, then? Without an occupancy series we will not invent a number of weeks. Reserve the room when you book the flight, treat the park as the appointment you show up early for, and read its posted hours the night before rather than trusting ours: we could not read them, for the reason given below. Our Florida lodging guide handles the regional choice.
Florida rooms carry a state sales tax and, in most counties, a local tourist development tax on top. We could not verify the Citrus County rate, so we give no percentage and no dollar figure. Check the line on the folio at checkout, and use the trip-cost breakdown for the statewide picture.
One upgrade genuinely changes a June visit: a bed close enough that the first two hours of daylight are spent at the spring instead of on the road. A pool at the end of a 90-degree afternoon does more for a family day than any excursion, which is the same logic as our Florida-with-kids guide. Money will not buy the 198th parking space, though. We found no reservation system for the lot in the state’s inventory.
Things to do in Homosassa Springs in June

The month’s real gift is daylight. With sunrise at 6:30 a.m. and sunset at 8:31 p.m. on June 15, the schedule that fails in December works here: an outdoor block before eight, a long indoor middle, and a second outdoor block after five when the storm cell has moved off. No other season gives you both ends of the day.
The park itself is what the state counts: 3,000 feet of boardwalk, two observation platforms and those 197 parking spaces at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Florida’s environmental department calls it one of the most famous springs in the state for seeing native wildlife up close. We could not verify the entrance fee, the opening hours or any June manatee count: the park’s own site returns a 403 error to our automated reads, and the state’s manatee pages render in the browser. Check both before you drive.
What June changes is the air, not the water. The USGS gauge at the spring read 74.3°F, and it reads close to that in January too. Against a 90.2°F afternoon that leaves about sixteen degrees between your skin and the water, roughly two degrees more than May’s gap. Getting into it is a separate trip: the state inventory lists no designated swimming area and no canoe, kayak or tube launch inside the park, and guided encounters work the way our manatee-swim guide describes.
We found no free-admission day and no published fee for June, so we promise neither. One thing worth knowing while you are there: Florida law defines a class it calls Outstanding Florida Springs, covering every historic first-magnitude spring plus six named by hand in the statute. Whether Homosassa carries that designation is not something we were able to confirm, so treat the statute as context rather than a label for this spring.
Homosassa Springs in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at sunrise, 6:30 a.m. in mid-June. Be at the entrance when it opens, walk the full 3,000 feet of boardwalk before nine, and give both observation platforms a slow stop while the light is low and the air is still near 70°F. Break for a long lunch indoors by one, because the sky builds after that on 10.9 days out of thirty. Come back out around five for the second half of the daylight, which runs to 8:31 p.m.
Day two repeats the early start and adds the drive: the Nature Coast rewards a morning on the water and an afternoon out of the sun, and our Florida things-to-do guide has the wider shortlist. On the 2.5 days a month when an inch or more falls, compress everything outdoors into the morning and hand the afternoon to the car, a museum or the pool. Lightning, not rain, is what ends a boardwalk walk.
Homosassa Springs in June vs May and July
| Measure | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 88.1°F | 90.2°F | 90.6°F |
| Average low | 62.6°F | 69.9°F | 72.0°F |
| Precipitation | 3.35 in | 7.91 in | 9.41 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.4 | 10.9 | 13.1 |
| Spring water at the vent | near 74°F | 74.3°F, read Sep 11, 2026 | near 74°F |
Across the three months the daytime heat barely moves: 88.1, 90.2 and 90.6°F, a total range of 2.5 degrees. The nights move a lot, climbing 9.4 degrees from May to July. Rain moves most of all. June carries 4.56 inches more than May and 6.5 more wet days, then July adds another 1.50 inches and 2.2 wet days on top. The spring ignores the whole argument and holds near 74°F in all three.
Shift four weeks earlier and you trade about two degrees of afternoon heat for six and a half fewer rainy days, plus nights at 62.6°F that make an evening outside genuinely comfortable; the price is shorter daylight and a spring run that feels sharper against cooler air. Shift four weeks later and you gain almost nothing in temperature while paying 2.2 more wet days. Of the three, June sits where the daylight is longest and the rain has not yet peaked.
Is June a good time to visit Homosassa Springs?
Yes, if you are an early riser, if the school calendar decides your dates, and if an afternoon indoors reads as a break rather than a loss. Wildlife from a boardwalk does not care about the season, and the first two hours of a June day here are excellent. No, if you were planning to swim inside the park, because the state records no swim area there, or if 90.2°F with wet-season humidity and rain on one day in three sounds like a fight.
If the answer is no, take May. The numbers are plain: 3.35 inches of rain against 7.91, 4.4 wet days against 10.9, and nights 7.3 degrees cooler. The May page lays out what that buys hour by hour, and the statewide calendar puts the dry season in order.
What June alone offers is the year’s longest light, 14 hours and 1 minute on the 15th with a sunset at 8:31 p.m., at 1.50 inches less rain and 2.2 fewer wet days than July.
The last word
Set the alarm and June works; sleep in and you meet a full lot and a building sky. The decision is not really the month, it is the hour you are willing to be at the gate, and 197 spaces make that a first-come question every summer Saturday. One number we have not yet spent says why the trip is worth the early start: the same USGS gauge measured 74 cubic feet per second leaving the vent, water replaced faster than it can cloud.
