HOMOSASSA SPRINGS · APRIL · THE MONTH IN FIGURES
The spring runs at about 74°F whatever the calendar says. The air does not, and that gap is the whole question of an April visit: afternoons average 82.8°F, mornings start at 55.7°F, and the boardwalk in between is a genuinely pleasant place to lose three hours.
April also closes out the dry half of the Florida year, with 2.18 inches of rain across 3.4 days wet enough to measure. That is less rain than March and a full inch less than May. Where to sleep, how the Nature Coast fits a longer trip and what the wider state calendar looks like belong to our Florida timing guide.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · HOMOSASSA SPRINGS · APRIL
April gives you 82.8°F afternoons over a 74.3°F spring, the lowest rain total of the spring trio and a park with 197 parking spaces, so the only real planning is an early arrival.
AVG HIGH 82.8°F · AVG LOW 55.7°F · 2.18 IN OF RAIN · 12H 55M OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: 3,000 feet of boardwalk under 82.8°F afternoons, two observation platforms, and water that reads 74.3°F in April exactly as it does in July.
Think twice before: packing a swimsuit for the park itself: the state facilities inventory lists no designated swimming area and no canoe, kayak or tube launch here.

Everything dated below comes from two instruments: a NOAA weather station inland at Brooksville, and a USGS gauge sitting in the spring run itself. They tell different stories by design, because one measures Florida weather and the other measures a Florida spring. Both are named where their numbers are used.
Homosassa Springs weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | April, 1991–2020 normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 82.8°F |
| Average low | 55.7°F |
| Precipitation | 2.18 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.4 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.7 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 0.1 |
| Daylight on April 15 | 12 hours 55 minutes |
The air normals come from NOAA NCEI’s 1991–2020 monthly set, measured at Brooksville Hernando County Airport, station USW00012818, about 27 miles inland from the spring. That matters twice over: it is a real thermometer rather than a grid-cell reanalysis, and it sits away from the water. Every figure here describes the air, never the run.
An average April collects 2.18 inches of rain across 3.4 days that record at least a tenth of an inch, so something measurable falls about one day in nine. The heavier version, an inch or more in the gauge, lands on 0.7 days: call it seven Aprils out of ten with one drenched afternoon. The remaining 26 or 27 days keep a boardwalk plan intact.
Between 55.7°F and 82.8°F there are 27.1 degrees, and you feel all of them before nine in the morning. Pack a fleece or a light jacket for the first hour, short sleeves for everything after ten, and nothing heavier at any point. A packable shell still earns its space in the daypack for those 0.7 heavy days.
On April 15 the sun comes up at 7:02 a.m. and sets at 7:57 p.m. local time, for 12 hours 55 minutes of daylight. That is enough evening to finish a late lunch, drive somewhere else and still have two usable hours of light. Wildlife viewing, though, rewards the other end of that clock.
How warm is Homosassa Springs in April?
April averages a high of 82.8°F and a low of 55.7°F, a 27.1°F daily swing. The spring sits outside that range altogether. The USGS gauge in the run, station 02310678, read 74.3°F on September 11, 2026, and that is a single instantaneous reading rather than an average of daily maxima. It reads close to that number every day of the year, in April as in December.
Dress for the two ends and ignore the middle. A long-sleeve layer at 7 a.m. comes off by ten and stays in the bag until dinner. Shade along the run does the rest, and 82.8°F is the coolest late-spring afternoon average you will get here, a full 5.3 degrees under May’s 88.1°F.
Freezing nights are essentially finished by now. NOAA counts 0.1 nights at or below 32°F in an average April, roughly one April in ten with a single cold night, and none of it touches the water at 74.3°F.
How busy is Homosassa Springs in April? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Citrus County, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can count is the lot. Florida’s Recreational Facilities Inventory lists 197 parking spaces at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, and the state’s own framing is blunt: that number, not an opening hour, decides a busy Saturday, because the gate closes when the spaces run out.
Lead time is therefore a parking question more than a hotel question, and we give no number of weeks to book, because no rate series was available to us. The practical move on an April weekend is arriving well before midday, with Crystal River as the fallback if the gate is already shut. Beds across the region sit in our where-to-stay guide.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Citrus County, so we give no percentage. The park’s fee schedule stayed out of reach too, since floridastateparks.org returns a 403 to automated reads, which is why we name no entrance fee. Build the budget the way our Florida cost guide does, then confirm the gate price on the day.
One line item genuinely changes an April visit, and it is not at the park. The state inventory records no designated swimming area and no canoe, kayak or tube launch at Homosassa Springs, so getting into the water with a manatee means a guided boat trip out of Crystal River, gear included. Our manatee-swim guide covers how those mornings run.
Things to do in Homosassa Springs in April

April sits between a March that still wants a jacket at noon and a May that runs 88.1°F. The spring holds 74.3°F through both. April afternoons average 8.5 degrees above the water, where March manages just 3.3 and May a heavy 13.8. That middle setting is what an unhurried three-hour walk needs: warm enough to stand still at a platform, cool enough to keep moving between them.
Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is the address, and the state counts what it holds: 3,000 feet of boardwalk, two observation platforms, 197 parking spaces. Florida’s own springs page puts the reputation plainly, writing that of all the state’s springs offering a chance to observe native wildlife up close, few are more famous. Opening hours and the entrance fee we could not read, so confirm both before you drive.
The water has no season. The air has a loud one, and April’s version is the thing to plan around: 55.7°F over a 74.3°F run at dawn, a gap of 18.6 degrees, then 82.8°F by mid-afternoon. Dawn is the cool end for you and an ordinary Tuesday for everything living in the run, so the platforms reward the early alarm rather than the long lunch.
As for anything free this month, we could not verify a fee schedule, a free day or an opening hour, so we name none. One fact costs nothing to carry in: Florida Statutes 373.802(5) protects every historic first-magnitude spring as an Outstanding Florida Spring, along with six more named by hand in the statute.
Homosassa Springs in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts cold and cheap. Be at the gate early with a fleece over short sleeves at 55.7°F, and walk the 3,000 feet of boardwalk slowly, giving both observation platforms a full stop rather than a photo. By eleven the layer is off and the thermometer is heading for 82.8°F. Take lunch in Homosassa, spend the hot hours in shade along the run, and remember that the light holds to 7:57 p.m. if a second loop tempts you.
Give day two to the water you cannot enter at the park: a Crystal River boat morning, then the drive back down for the late light. If one of April’s 3.4 wet days lands on you, keep the boardwalk and add the shell, because the month’s 2.18 inches fall across a handful of days rather than steadily. Drive times and routes sit in our getting-around guide.
Homosassa Springs in April vs March and May
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 77.6°F | 82.8°F | 88.1°F |
| Average low | 50.8°F | 55.7°F | 62.6°F |
| Precipitation | 2.66 in | 2.18 in | 3.35 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.7 | 3.4 | 4.4 |
| Spring water at the gauge | No seasonal swing | 74.3°F, read Sep 11, 2026 | No seasonal swing |
| Afternoon air above the spring | 3.3°F | 8.5°F | 13.8°F |
March runs 77.6°F by day and 50.8°F at night, April 82.8 and 55.7, May 88.1 and 62.6. Rain does not follow that line: 2.66 inches over 3.7 wet days in March, 2.18 over 3.4 in April, then 3.35 over 4.4 in May. The spring stays near 74.3°F through all three, so the calendar only ever moves the air above it.
Shift four weeks earlier and you give back 5.2 degrees of afternoon and 4.9 degrees of night for half an inch more rain. Shift four weeks later and 88.1°F afternoons arrive with an extra wet day, 1.17 more inches, and a 62.6°F dawn that spares you the fleece and costs you the cool early hours. April holds the lowest rain total and the fewest wet days of the three.
Is April a good time to visit Homosassa Springs?
Yes for anyone who wants long hours on a boardwalk without May’s heat: 82.8°F afternoons, 3.4 wet days, nearly thirteen hours of light. No for anyone arriving with a swimsuit and an expectation of getting in at the park, since the state lists neither a swimming area nor a launch here. Families balancing walking with a boat morning get the best of it, and our kids guide covers the pacing.
If 82.8°F sounds warmer than you want on foot, March is the month to prefer: 77.6°F by day, 50.8°F at night, and only half an inch more rain across 3.7 wet days. Our March page has the detail. If you are chasing the emptiest possible morning, we have no crowd series to point you at a month, so we will not pretend otherwise.
No other month puts an 8.5-degree gap between the afternoon air and a 74.3°F spring, with the lowest wet-day count of the three and 12 hours 55 minutes of light on the 15th.
The last word
Set the alarm, take the first hour, and let the 197-space lot be someone else’s afternoon problem. The number worth carrying home is the one under the boardwalk: 74 cubic feet per second leaving the vent at the September 2026 reading, enough turnover to keep the water clear no matter what the air is doing that month. Book the Crystal River morning if you want to be in it, and check the park’s fee and hours on the day, because we could not.
