HOMOSASSA SPRINGS · FLORIDA · MAY
The spring does not care what month it is. The USGS gauge at Homosassa Springs read 74.3°F (23.5°C) on September 11, 2026, and it reads close to that on any date you pick. What May changes is the air above it: NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals put the average afternoon at 88.1°F, nearly 14 degrees warmer than the water, when January’s air sits well below it.
May also sits just ahead of the line Florida crosses in June. Rain normals run 3.35 inches in May against 7.91 in June, and measurable rain falls on 4.4 days instead of 10.9. Daylight on the 15th stretches 13 hours 39 minutes. The one thing May will not hand you is a swim: the state’s facilities inventory lists no designated swimming area at the park, and no canoe, kayak or tube launch either.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · MAY
May opens a 13.8-degree gap between a 74.3°F spring and an 88.1°F afternoon, with 4.4 wet days instead of June’s 10.9: come for the boardwalk and the wildlife, not for a swim.
HIGH 88.1°F · LOW 62.6°F · 3.35 IN OF RAIN · NO SWIMMING AREA
Go for: 3,000 feet of boardwalk wildlife viewing, 13 hours 39 minutes of daylight on the 15th, and a month that still runs less than half of June’s rainfall.
Think twice before: planning to get in the water at this park. The state inventory lists no designated swimming area and no canoe, kayak or tube launch.

Everything below is dated to the month. In-water manatee trips are a Crystal River business rather than a park one, and our manatee guide carries the season and the rules. Homosassa Springs weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | May normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 88.1°F |
| Average low | 62.6°F |
| Precipitation | 3.35 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.4 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 1.0 |
| Daylight, May 15 | 13h 39m |
Every figure here comes from NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals, and the thermometer behind them is station USW00012818 at Brooksville Hernando County Airport, roughly 27 miles from the spring. That matters twice over. It is a real station record rather than a modeled grid cell, and it measures air, not spring water. May’s normals: 88.1°F by day, 62.6°F at night, 3.35 inches of rain across the month.
Measurable rain, meaning at least a tenth of an inch, shows up on 4.4 days in an average May. Call it one day in seven. Of those, one day in a typical May collects an inch or more, so the month’s 3.35 inches tends to arrive in a couple of serious sessions rather than as gray drizzle spread over four weeks. Plan something outdoors every day and expect to be interrupted once.
Between the 62.6°F normal low and the 88.1°F normal high sits 25.5 degrees of daily swing. A long-sleeve layer at seven in the morning becomes dead weight by eleven, so bring one that folds into a daypack. Sun cover beats a jacket in this month: by mid-afternoon you will be picking your route along the boardwalk by where the shade falls.
On May 15 the sun clears the horizon at 6:37 a.m. and sets at 8:16 p.m. local time, for 13 hours 39 minutes of daylight. That last figure is the practical one. An 8 p.m. sunset means you can skip the hottest stretch of the day entirely and still have two unhurried hours of light waiting on the other side of it.
How warm is Homosassa Springs in May?
The month’s two ends are 88.1°F and 62.6°F, a 25.5-degree gap between the warmest hour and the coldest. The water splits the difference and then ignores the calendar: 74.3°F at the USGS gauge. That water number is a single instantaneous reading taken on September 11, 2026, not an average of daily maxima like the sea tables you may be used to, and it stands in for May because a spring barely moves across the year while the air above it moves 25 degrees in a day.
In practice, a mid-May morning on the boardwalk feels like a mild spring day with dew on the rails, and the same spot after two o’clock feels like high summer. Light cotton and a hat early, then shade and water once the air is past 85°F. If you mean to be at the gate when it opens, carry the layer you will resent carrying by lunch.
Frost is not a May question at this latitude, and we will not pretend to a count. NOAA’s monthly normals give us the 62.6°F mean low, not a tally of cold nights, and we found no freeze series for this station. April’s mean low of 55.7°F is the cooler of the two figures we can defend, and even that reads as a sweater rather than a coat.
How busy is Homosassa Springs in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
No occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series turned up in our sources for this corner of the Nature Coast, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can count is capacity. The state inventory lists 197 parking spaces at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. That number, not a price, is what settles a busy Saturday: when the lot fills, the gate closes.
So the reservation that matters in May is your alarm clock. We could not verify any advance parking system for those 197 spaces, and arrival time is the lever you control. Beds are a separate and statewide problem: our where-to-stay guide and the trip-cost breakdown carry what we can defend on lodging, and neither invents a May rate for this town.
We could not verify the lodging-tax rate that applies here, so we give no percentage. Ask the property for the all-in nightly total rather than the headline rate. Do the same with admission: floridastateparks.org answers automated reads with a 403, so we could read neither an entrance fee nor an opening hour, and fees vary by park and by season.
One line item changes May more than any other, and it is where you sleep the night before. A bed within a short drive turns a 6:37 a.m. sunrise into an easy arrival and buys back the two coolest hours of an 88.1°F day. The same money spent an hour up the road gets you to the gate around eleven, when the lot is at its fullest and the air is still climbing.
Things to do in Homosassa Springs in May

Rain is what separates May from June here: 3.35 inches against 7.91, and 4.4 wet days against 10.9. A full 13-hour-39-minute day built around the outdoors is a reasonable plan in May and a coin toss four weeks later. Against April, May trades 5.3 degrees of extra afternoon heat (88.1°F against 82.8°F) for water that finally reads as relief rather than a shock.
The park is Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, and the state counts what it holds: 3,000 feet of boardwalk, two observation platforms, 197 parking spaces. The gauge at the vent measured 74 cubic feet per second leaving the spring. That flow is why the water stays clear, since it gets replaced faster than it can cloud. Florida’s environmental department writes that of all the state’s springs offering a close look at native wildlife, few are more famous than this one.
Nothing on that list changes with the season except the air around it. The spring holds near 74.3°F in May exactly as it does in January. What moves is the 13.8 degrees now separating it from an 88.1°F afternoon. On an open platform at two o’clock, that gap is the whole argument for doing the boardwalk before ten.
As for what costs nothing in May, we can only report what we could not read. The state park site returns a 403 to automated requests and the wildlife agency’s manatee page renders client-side, so we quote no admission price, no opening hour, no manatee count and no fee-free day. A figure found on another park’s page does not transfer to this one. Call before you build a morning around a number.
Homosassa Springs in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs against the heat. Sunrise on May 15 is 6:37 a.m., so aim to be at the gate whenever it opens, walk the 3,000 feet of boardwalk first and take both observation platforms before ten. Eat somewhere shaded between noon and three, when the 88.1°F normal high does its work. Return for the last two hours of light: sunset at 8:16 p.m. leaves a long soft stretch after the worst of the afternoon.
Day two repeats the early start and spends its afternoon on the water side of the county, where in-water manatee trips belong to Crystal River rather than to the park (our manatee guide has the season and the rules). If the sky turns, remember the shape of May rain: 4.4 days at a tenth of an inch or more, one of them at an inch or more. One wet day in seven means the odds still favor the boardwalk on any given morning.
Homosassa Springs in May vs April and June
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain | Days with 0.10 in or more | Spring water |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| April | 82.8°F | 55.7°F | 2.18 in | 3.4 | near 74°F |
| May | 88.1°F | 62.6°F | 3.35 in | 4.4 | near 74°F |
| June | 90.2°F | 69.9°F | 7.91 in | 10.9 | near 74°F |
April to June is a 7.4-degree climb in afternoon normals (82.8°F, 88.1°F, 90.2°F) and a 14.2-degree climb at night (55.7°F, 62.6°F, 69.9°F). Rain does something far less gradual: 2.18 inches, then 3.35, then 7.91, with wet days going 3.4, 4.4, 10.9. The spring holds near 74°F through all three months, on the same gauge.
Shift four weeks back to April and you gain cooler afternoons and drier ground, at the price of a 55.7°F dawn and water that still feels cold against 82.8°F air. Shift four weeks forward to June and the afternoon gains only about two degrees while the rain more than doubles and wet days leap from 4.4 to 10.9. Our April page makes the earlier case in full.
Is May a good time to visit Homosassa Springs?
Yes for anyone who came to watch animals from a boardwalk and wants long light to do it in. May gives 13 hours 39 minutes of daylight on the 15th, 4.4 wet days for the entire month, and a 74.3°F spring under an 88.1°F sky. No for anyone whose plan involves getting into that water at this park, because the state inventory lists no designated swimming area and no launch, and no month improves that answer.
If the heat is your objection, April is the month to prefer: 82.8°F afternoons, 2.18 inches of rain, 3.4 wet days, against 55.7°F mornings. If the water is the point of the trip, the choice is about where you go in the county rather than when, and the manatee guide takes that question. Families weighing the drive will find the rest in Florida with kids.
What May alone offers is a 13.8-degree gap between air and water with fewer than five wet days behind it, something neither April (a gap of 8.5 degrees) nor June (10.9 wet days) can match.
The last word
Florida law has a category for this place. The statute defining Outstanding Florida Springs covers every historic first-magnitude spring, as the Florida Geological Survey determines them, plus six more named by hand in the text. That status says nothing about visiting hours, and we could not read those anyway. So decide the one thing May asks you to decide, and that is what time you get out of bed: the lot holds 197 cars, the sun is up at 6:37, and 3,000 feet of boardwalk go best before the air reaches 88°F.
