Óbidos in October: Weather, Rain Days, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

Óbidos is a walled village you can cross on foot before your coffee goes cold, and October hands it the light it deserves: 11 hours 13 minutes of daylight on the 15th, the sun up at 7:46 a.m. and gone behind the ramparts by 6:59 p.m. The air is mild rather than warm, with a normal high of 67.3°F. The whitewash goes gold around five, the lanes hold their heat late, and nothing about the month asks you to hurry.

What October takes back is the dry weather. September averages 0.99 inches of rain at the coastal station nearby. October averages 3.33 inches, spread over 9.2 days with measurable rain. That is the whole trade in one line: afternoons 2.3 degrees cooler than September, and more than triple the water.

October gives Óbidos mild 67°F afternoons and light until nearly seven, and charges for them with 9.2 rain days, so take a bed inside the walls and keep a long lunch in reserve.

Think twice before: planning a swim at Foz do Arelho. We verified no sea-surface temperature for this coast, and 9.2 days of the month record rain.

October’s own arithmetic starts below: the normals, the rain days, the light, and the three months around it set against each other. Anything the calendar does not touch, the village’s history, the drive up from Lisbon, where the beds are, lives in our Óbidos guide and in getting around Portugal.

Óbidos weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days

October at Óbidos IPMA normal, 1991–2020
Average high 67.3°F (19.6°C)
Average low 59.5°F (15.3°C)
Day-to-night spread 7.8°F
Precipitation 3.33 in (84.6 mm)
Days with 0.04 in or more 9.2
Days with 0.39 in or more 2.8

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese weather service, and from its 1991–2020 normals at station 531, Cabo Carvoeiro at Peniche: a real thermometer 32 meters above sea level, not a model grid cell. October there averages a high of 67.3°F, a low of 59.5°F and 3.33 inches of rain. Cabo Carvoeiro stands on an exposed headland while Óbidos sits slightly inland behind its walls, so read these as the coast’s numbers, close to the village but not its own record. Higher ground inland is colder and considerably wetter.

Measurable rain falls on 9.2 days in an average October, roughly three days in ten. A proper soaking, 0.39 inch or more, arrives on 2.8 days, about one day in eleven. Two cautions travel with those counts. IPMA measures at 0.04 inch rather than the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use, so the two sets of numbers are not interchangeable, and a rain day rarely means a wet morning plus a wet afternoon. Walk the walls early and keep a long lunch in reserve.

The day-to-night spread is 7.8°F. Mornings near 59.5°F and afternoons near 67.3°F live in the same wardrobe, so one layer over a shirt covers the day, plus a shell for the wet half of it. Footwear matters more than warmth. Óbidos is paved in calçada, polished limestone that turns slick within minutes of a shower and stays that way in the shade. Bring shoes with real grip, and let our Portugal packing list handle the rest.

On October 15 the sun rises at 7:46 a.m. and sets at 6:59 p.m. local time (06:46 and 17:59 UTC), giving 11 hours 13 minutes of daylight. The useful end is the evening one: the low western sun reaches the whitewash after six and the ramparts stay walkable until it goes. Dinner at eight happens in the dark, so choose somewhere inside the gates rather than a drive.

How warm is Óbidos in October?

67.3°F by mid-afternoon, 59.5°F before dawn, a spread of 7.8 degrees: October here sits in a narrow band. The Atlantic does that smoothing all autumn, and the same station records a 7.5-degree gap in September and 7.6 in November. The month cools from one end to the other, but no single day swings much.

In practice you take coffee on Rua Direita in a sweater and walk the ramparts after two in shirtsleeves, with the wind off the headland casting the deciding vote. The lanes inside the walls run several degrees cooler than the open wall top because the stone stays in shade. Anyone who chills easily wants that layer back on by seven, once the sun has dropped.

Freezing is not the October question at this altitude: the normal low is 59.5°F, and we found no count of nights at or below 32°F in the IPMA normals we read, so we publish none. We also found no sea-surface series we trust for this stretch of coast, so no water temperature comes from us. If you meet one elsewhere, check what it averages, because many tables publish a mean of daily maxima, which reads a little warmer than a true 24-hour average.

How busy is Óbidos in October? Crowds, booking and prices

By the calendar, October is shoulder season: the European school holidays are behind it and the Christmas market season has not begun. That is where our confidence stops. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Óbidos, so we crown no month the cheapest and none the busiest. What is dated and certain is the light, gone at 6:59 p.m. in mid-month, and the 9.2 days that push everyone indoors at some point.

Óbidos is a small walled village, and the beds inside the gates amount to a short list of guesthouses plus the pousada in the castle. Scarcity, rather than season, is the reason to reserve early. We give no lead time in weeks because we verified no occupancy data to build one on. When the inside-the-walls rooms are gone, Caldas da Rainha and Peniche are the standard fallbacks, and our where-to-stay guide covers the wider region.

We could not verify a municipal tourist-tax rate for Óbidos, so we give no per-night amount and no exemption rules. A municipal tax is common across Portugal and is usually settled at the property rather than through the booking site, so ask when you reserve and check the folio at the end.

The one line where paying more genuinely changes the month is the bed. With rain on 9.2 days, sleeping inside the walls turns a shower into a five-minute retreat instead of a drive, and it buys you the lanes before 8 a.m. and again after the light goes. Meals, ginjinha and the road up from Lisbon cost what they cost in any month. National ranges sit in our trip-cost guide.

Things to do in Óbidos in October

What October offers and November does not is warmth with light still attached to it. The normal high is 67.3°F, 4.7 degrees above November’s 62.6, and on the 15th the sun is on the ramparts until 6:59 p.m. Summer runs the same walk in heat and glare. October runs it at an angle that flatters the whitewash and lets you climb the steps without pausing halfway.

The circuit of the walls is the headline walk, with no railing along much of its length and steep steps near the Porta da Vila. Rua Direita runs the length of the village between that gate and the castle, now a pousada. Igreja de Santa Maria holds the blue-and-white tiled interior most visitors come for, and the aqueduct strides out from the gate across open ground. West of town, Lagoa de Óbidos opens to the sea at Foz do Arelho.

October changes the air around those places rather than the places themselves. The lagoon does not care what month it is, but a 67.3°F normal high makes Foz do Arelho a walking beach and a seafood lunch rather than a swim. On the wall circuit the variable is grip: 2.8 days of the month deliver 0.39 inch or more, and the limestone holds that water for hours where the sun never reaches. If the ocean is the point of the trip, Nazaré is up the coast and has its own guide.

On free entry we have to leave you empty-handed: we could not verify which sites in Óbidos charge admission in October, nor any free-entry scheme, so we name none. We also found no published event dates for the village in October, so we list none. Confirm with the municipality before you build a weekend around one.

Óbidos in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Be at the Porta da Vila around 8, a quarter-hour after the 7:46 a.m. sunrise, and take the wall circuit first while the stone is still in shade and the sun is low enough to see the whole village in relief. Rua Direita and Igreja de Santa Maria fill the late morning. Lunch runs long, because 67.3°F afternoons reward sitting down. Then give the hour before the 6:59 p.m. sunset back to the ramparts, facing west.

Day two goes outside the gates: the aqueduct on foot, then west to Lagoa de Óbidos and the sand at Foz do Arelho, with a car doing the work (renting one is the usual answer in this corner of Portugal). If the sky turns, and on 9.2 days a month it does, flip the order. Spend a slow morning in Caldas da Rainha among the market stalls and the ceramics, then take the wall circuit in the afternoon gap. Only 2.8 days a month deliver 0.39 inch or more, so most wet days leave openings.

Óbidos in October vs September and November

IPMA normal, 1991–2020 September October November
Average high 69.6°F (20.9°C) 67.3°F (19.6°C) 62.6°F (17.0°C)
Average low 62.1°F (16.7°C) 59.5°F (15.3°C) 55.0°F (12.8°C)
Precipitation 0.99 in 3.33 in 3.86 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 4.1 9.2 10.5
Sea temperature not verified not verified not verified

Across the three months the temperature slides evenly and the rain does not. September to October costs 2.3°F off the afternoon high and adds 2.34 inches of rain, with wet days jumping from 4.1 to 9.2. October to November costs another 4.7°F and adds 0.53 inch, taking wet days to 10.5. In other words, October keeps close to September’s thermometer while it already carries November’s rain pattern. No water temperature appears for any of the three, because we verified none.

Shift four weeks earlier and you buy dry weather: 0.99 inches over 4.1 days, with afternoons 2.3 degrees warmer, and our September page lays that month out in full. Shift four weeks later and November asks for 4.7 degrees and 1.3 extra wet days in exchange for nothing we can measure, since we verified no price or occupancy data that would make it the bargain month.

Is October a good time to visit Óbidos?

Yes, if your Óbidos is a walking one. A 67.3°F afternoon, a 7.8-degree day-to-night spread and light until 6:59 p.m. carry the walls, the lanes and a lunch that goes on too long, and the shower that interrupts them is shorter than the day. No, if water is the reason you picked this coast. We publish no sea temperature, and the air alone says Foz do Arelho in October is a beach for shoes.

Travelers who want dry above all should go four weeks earlier: 0.99 inches and 4.1 wet days in September against October’s 3.33 and 9.2, at a cost of 2.3 degrees. Travelers who want the village cooler, greener and emptier of summer should take November’s 10.5 wet days as the price. Portugal’s full twelve-month picture sits in our best-time guide.

October is the last month of the year whose normal high clears 65°F at this station, and it still puts sun on the ramparts at a quarter to seven in the evening.

The last word

Book the room inside the walls first and let everything else follow, because with 9.2 wet days the difference between a good October and a soggy one is how far you stand from your own door at four in the afternoon. Before anyone cancels on the forecast, run the division: 3.33 inches over 9.2 days averages roughly a third of an inch per wet day, an umbrella morning rather than a written-off week. Then walk the circuit twice, once at eight and once at six. It is a different village in each light.
