ÓBIDOS · PORTUGAL · JULY
Óbidos is a whitewashed town inside a complete medieval wall, blue and yellow paint around every door, one long cobbled spine running through the middle of it. July hands the place the thing the rest of the Portuguese calendar rations: light. On the fifteenth the sun sets at 9:05 p.m., and the rain total for the entire month reads 0.20 inches.
What the date takes back is warmth, oddly enough. The official normals for this stretch of coast put the July average high at 68.9°F, several degrees below what most American visitors pack for in an Iberian summer. Everything not fixed by the month, where to sleep and how to arrive, sits in our Óbidos guide and in getting around Portugal.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ÓBIDOS IN JULY
July is the driest of the three summer months in the normals we read, 0.20 inches against June’s 0.48, with daylight running to 9:05 p.m. and daytime air that stops at 68.9°F.
IPMA 1991–2020 · CABO CARVOEIRO STATION · 0.9 WET DAYS · 14 H 43 MIN OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: 14 hours 43 minutes of daylight on July 15, a whole month of rain totaling 0.20 inches, and dinners that finish while it is still light.
Think twice before: planning the trip around swimming. We could not verify a sea-temperature normal for this coast, and the coastal air averages 68.9°F by day.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and specifically from station 531 at Cabo Carvoeiro on the Peniche headland, 105 feet (32 m) above the Atlantic. That is a real thermometer on open coast, not a model grid cell. Óbidos sits a short way inland behind its walls, and ground higher and further inland runs colder and far wetter than this reading.

IPMA’s 1991–2020 series gives July an average high of 68.9°F, an average low of 62.4°F and 0.20 inches of precipitation for the month. Read the caveat alongside the number. Cabo Carvoeiro measures the open coast at Peniche, Óbidos stands behind its walls a little inland, and the hills to the east are a colder, wetter proposition than anything in that series. Pack for a coastal reading, and do not carry it up a mountain trail.
Rain, translated: 0.9 days in an average July record at least 0.04 inch (1 mm). That is one wet day in thirty-one. The threshold belongs to IPMA, not to the 0.10-inch line American tables draw, so the count does not swap cleanly into a US forecast page. Planning a July afternoon in Óbidos around rain means planning around something that most years never shows up.
Day and night sit 6.5 degrees apart, from 68.9°F down to 62.4°F, so evenings cool without falling off a cliff. The suitcase consequence is small and non-negotiable: a light sweater for dinner, and a windbreaker if your day ends facing the Atlantic at Peniche or Foz do Arelho, where the breeze does more to the feel of the air than the thermometer does. Our packing guide handles the rest.
On July 15 the sun rises at 6:22 a.m. and sets at 9:05 p.m. local time, 14 hours 43 minutes of daylight. Dinner at eight begins in full sun. There is still usable light after nine for a slow loop of the lanes, and that single fact reshapes a summer itinerary more than any temperature figure.
How warm is Óbidos in July?
Set the two numbers side by side and the month looks Atlantic rather than Iberian: 68.9°F by day, 62.4°F at night, 6.5 degrees between them. June’s gap runs 6.4 degrees and August’s 7.2, so the swing barely shifts across the summer. A monthly normal also smooths away the hot days, and the series carries no extremes, so treat 68.9°F as the middle of July rather than its ceiling.
In practice, mornings start at or near that 62.4°F low and want long sleeves. By mid-afternoon you are walking the town in the high sixties, which is shirt weather with no need to hide from the sun. Swimwear still earns its place in the bag for the beach at Foz do Arelho, with the caveat below: we have no water temperature to promise you.
Frost is not a July question here. The average low sits more than 30 degrees above freezing, and the IPMA normals we read carry no frost count for the month. As for the ocean, we could not verify a sea-surface normal for this coast, so we give no water figure at all. Where another table offers one, check what it measures: published sea temperatures are usually averages of daily maxima and run warmer than a 24-hour mean.
How busy is Óbidos in July? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Óbidos, so we crown no month expensive and quote no rate. The calendar still says something plain: July is high summer, European school holidays are running, and a walled town an easy drive north of Lisbon absorbs day-trip traffic on top of its overnight guests. Country-wide budgets live in our Portugal trip-cost guide.
How many weeks ahead to book is a question we cannot answer in weeks, because we have no availability data to count. The lever we can name is the overnight stay. Sunset at 9:05 p.m. means the town has five or six hours of light after the lunch crowd thins, and those hours belong to people with a bed inside or beside the walls. Fix your flight dates first, then the room.
We could not verify whether Óbidos levies a lodging tax, or at what amount, so no percentage and no per-night figure appears here. Ask the property for a total that includes any local tax when you book, rather than reading the advertised nightly rate as the final number.
One upgrade changes July itself rather than just the invoice, and it is a rental car. With wheels, the town stops being a two-hour stop on a coach route and becomes a base for the lagoon, the beaches west of it and Nazaré up the coast, all of them at their most usable in the month with 0.9 wet days.
Things to do in Óbidos in July

Two figures make July different from February in this town: 14 hours 43 minutes of daylight and 0.20 inches of rain across the whole month. Together they put the outdoors on the table from breakfast to well past dinner. A single night in July buys you two evening walks and a morning; the same night in winter buys you one short afternoon.
Inside the walls, the spine is Rua Direita, running from the Porta da Vila to the castle end, with the Igreja de Santa Maria on the main square and the old keep now working as a pousada. Below the town, the aqueduct runs along the road out. West of Óbidos the Lagoa de Óbidos opens to the sea at Foz do Arelho, and the surf and fishing town of Peniche sits out on the headland where the weather station stands.
July changes the air around those places, not the places themselves. June carries 0.48 inches and 2.2 wet days, July 0.20 inches and 0.9, so a lagoon afternoon becomes a plan instead of a gamble. Warmth barely participates: 67.6°F in June, 68.9 in July, 70.2 in August. The rain column does all the work of making the month.
Free in July: the walking, which is most of what people come for. The lanes, the main square and the view down to the aqueduct cost nothing, and light until 9:05 p.m. hands you the hours to use them twice a day. We could not verify any free-admission day or summer reduction at the town’s sites, and we found no verified July event dates for Óbidos, so we list none.
Óbidos in July: a two-day itinerary
Day one belongs to the light. Sunrise is 6:22 a.m., so an eight o’clock start puts you on Rua Direita with low sun on the whitewash and the coach parking still half empty. Take the middle of the day slowly, since 68.9°F forces nobody indoors but a long lunch is still the right shape for it. Drive west mid-afternoon to the Lagoa de Óbidos, come back for an eight o’clock dinner in daylight, and keep the wall-side loop for the hour before 9:05 p.m.
Day two runs outward: Nazaré up the coast, or Peniche and the headland at Cabo Carvoeiro where the thermometer behind these normals stands. If the sky turns, and 0.9 wet days a month says it probably will not, the fallback is short: the churches, the cafés along Rua Direita, and an earlier run back toward Lisbon. Our getting-around guide has the transport options for anyone who skipped the car.
Óbidos in July vs June and August
| IPMA 1991–2020, Cabo Carvoeiro | June | July | August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 67.6°F | 68.9°F | 70.2°F |
| Average low | 61.2°F | 62.4°F | 63.0°F |
| Monthly precipitation | 0.48 in | 0.20 in | 0.42 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 2.2 | 0.9 | 1.8 |
Across the three months the daytime air moves 2.6 degrees in total, from 67.6°F to 70.2°F, with lows tracking 61.2, 62.4 and 63.0. Rain does the separating. July’s 0.20 inches is well under half of June’s 0.48 and less than half of August’s 0.42, and the wet-day count falls from 2.2 to 0.9 before climbing back to 1.8. On sea temperature we have no verified figure for any of the three, so we give none.
Shift four weeks back and June costs you 1.3°F of daytime warmth and more than doubles the rain, 0.48 inches spread over 2.2 days instead of 0.9. Shift four weeks forward and August gives you the warmest air of the three at 70.2°F, with 0.42 inches and nights at 63.0°F. Neither move is dramatic, and neither is free.
Is July a good time to visit Óbidos?
Yes for travelers who came for long evenings and dry stone: walkers, photographers, anyone adding a night or two north of Lisbon to a bigger Portugal trip. Less so for anyone who booked Iberia expecting heat. An average high of 68.9°F is an American spring afternoon, the Atlantic wind at the Peniche end is real, and a July weekend here is not a beach vacation in the Algarve sense.
If the trip is really about water, August is the warmer bet on air alone, 70.2°F by day and 63.0°F at night for 0.42 inches of rain, and we still have no sea normal to reassure anybody with. If crowds are the worry, we have no occupancy data for any month and will not pretend otherwise. The practical fix is structural rather than seasonal: sleep in town and use the hours after five.
What July holds that its neighbors do not is that rain column: 0.20 inches across thirty-one days, the driest of the three in the IPMA series, under almost fifteen hours of daylight.
The last word
Book the night, not the day trip. The version of Óbidos worth the drive starts when the light goes long and runs to 9:05 p.m., and it is not available to anyone heading back to Lisbon after lunch. One figure worth reading twice before you pack: 0.1 day in an average July records 0.39 inch (10 mm) or more, a genuine soaking roughly one July in ten. Bring the sweater for the 62.4°F dawn and leave the umbrella at home.
