Funchal in June: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Prices

Mid-June gives Funchal 14 hours and 20 minutes of daylight, average highs of 74.7°F, and 0.31 inches of rain for the entire month. The sun goes down at 9:18 p.m. local time on June 15, which is late enough that a table on the seafront at eight o’clock is still a daylight dinner, and the sea off the harbor has climbed to 71.6°F.

What the month withholds is the warm water. July reads 75.0°F at the surface against June’s 71.6°F, and a swimmer who counts a vacation in hours in the sea will feel those 3.4 degrees. What it hands over instead is space: the port counted 10,816 cruise passengers in June and 113,839 in February. Winter is Funchal’s crowd season, not summer, and that single reversal explains most of what June feels like on the ground.

June buys long evenings, a dry city and an empty cruise port, and it costs you a sea that is still 3.4°F short of July.

Go for: the longest days of the year, dry ground for the Monte wicker sledges, and a port that logged 10,816 cruise passengers in June against 113,839 in February.

Think twice before: building the week around swimming: 71.6°F is a mean of daily maxima, and July runs 3.4°F warmer.

Every figure here is measured in Funchal itself. IPMA’s station 522 sits at 58.0 meters above the harbor, about 190 feet, and its 1991-2020 normals describe the city rather than the island. Madeira’s high ground is colder and far wetter, and the far end of a coast keeps weather of its own, so nobody should pack for a mountain levada on a reading taken at sea level. Our packing guide handles the layers, and the Madeira guide covers the island beyond the city limits.

IPMA, Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute, puts the June average high at 74.7°F, the average low at 64.8°F and the month’s precipitation at 0.31 inches. Those come from the 1991-2020 normals at station 522, a real thermometer standing in the city, not a reanalysis grid cell. In Madeira the difference is not academic: a single grid square here would blend a harbor at sea level with mountains that collect several times the rain, and the average of the two describes nowhere.

One day in an average June records 0.04 inch (1 mm) or more, and 0.2 day records 0.39 inch (10 mm) or more, so a proper soaking turns up roughly one June in five. Mind the thresholds before comparing that with a table from home: these are IPMA’s cut-offs, not the 0.10 inch American summaries count, and the two sets of numbers do not swap. Practically, a June visitor schedules outdoors every single day and keeps one indoor hour in the back pocket.

Just under ten degrees separate the daytime 74.7°F from the nighttime 64.8°F. That is a gentle spread by continental standards, and still enough to notice on a terrace after nine, when the light is holding but the air has dropped. A shirt-weight layer covers the evening and nothing heavier is needed in the city. Shoes deserve more thought than outerwear: the old town is cobbled and tilts uphill almost everywhere away from the promenade.

On June 15 the sun rises at 6:58 a.m. and sets at 9:18 p.m. local time, converted from 05:58 and 20:18 UTC, which comes to 14 hours and 20 minutes of daylight. The city’s fixed hours quit long before the light does: the Mercado dos Lavradores locks up at 19:00 Monday to Friday, two hours and change before sunset, and the last cable car leaves at 17:45. Plan the ticketed half of the day early and let the free half run late.

Can you swim in Funchal in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off Funchal averages 71.6°F in June, taken from the Open-Meteo Marine series over 2015-2024. Read the fine print on that figure: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest moment of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. Tables that publish a daily mean will show you a slightly cooler Funchal, and neither number is wrong. They answer different questions.

In the water, 71.6°F is a swim rather than a soak. The first half-minute is bracing, the next hour is comfortable for most adults, and small children tend to call time earlier than their parents do. That reading is 1.7°F up on May’s 69.9°F and 3.4°F below July’s 75.0°F. Since the figure tracks daily peaks, late afternoon is the kindest hour of the day to get in, not first thing after breakfast.

We found no wind or wave series for Funchal, so we give no swell heights and no figures on the afternoon breeze, and anyone booking a boat should ask the operator directly. What the rain record does support is a dry month at sea level: 0.31 inches across June against 1.07 in May. Days written off by weather should be rare, whatever the sea is doing.

How busy is Funchal in June? Cruise arrivals, prices and the tourist tax

Funchal’s busy season is winter, and the gap is enormous. APRAM, the regional ports authority, counted 113,210 cruise passengers in January, 113,839 in February, 108,699 in March and 88,918 in April, then 19,434 in May, 10,816 in June and 4,071 in July. Ship calls track the same curve: 44 in February, 3 in July. Those counts are read from APRAM’s published charts, which plot 2025 and 2026 together. We give the higher, more recent series, and the winter-to-summer shape is identical in both years.

We could not verify hotel occupancy or monthly room rates for Funchal, so we name no cheapest month and set no lead time for lodging. The ticketed half of the trip can be timed precisely, though. Cable car e-tickets stay valid 60 days after purchase, so that one travels in your inbox. Blandy’s Wine Lodge asks visitors to book ahead and cancels free up to 24 hours before. The Monte sledges cannot be reserved at all: same-day sales, on site only, and the office can shut early when the queue grows or the weather turns.

The city charges a Taxa Municipal Turistica of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights. That is EUR 14 per guest at most, EUR 28 for a couple staying a week. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and the clock starts again after an interrupted stay. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are people with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of Madeira who can show a local tax address.

One upgrade is worth paying for in June, and it is the way down from Monte. A cable car return costs EUR 22 and a single EUR 16. Take the single up, then add a wicker sledge down at EUR 30 for one rider, EUR 40 for two or EUR 60 for three, and you have deliberately spent more than the round trip. June is the month to do it: no three-person sledge runs in rain or on wet ground, and the June normal carries a single rain day.

Things to do in Funchal in June: Monte, the wicker sledges and Blandy’s Wine Lodge

June is the month those sledges are most likely to be running at all. The carreiros work Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, and take Sundays off all year. Weather closes them faster than the timetable does: wet ground cancels the three-person ride outright, and the ticket office can shut early when conditions turn. With 1.0 rain day on the June normal against 3.3 in May, the odds sit with you. Long light helps the rest of the day, since 14 hours and 20 minutes leaves room for Monte in the morning and the waterfront after eight.

The cable car runs from the seafront to Monte, 08:45 to 17:45, every day of the year except Christmas, at EUR 22 return and EUR 16 one way, with under-7s free and ages 7 to 14 at half price. At the top station on Caminho das Babosas, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden covers 70,000 square meters of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum, EUR 18 for adults. In town, Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga runs a 45-minute Premium Tour at EUR 23 ending on three Madeira wines.

What June alters at these addresses is the clock rather than the planting. The garden keeps two timetables, 09:00 to 19:00 from April to September and 09:00 to 18:00 from October to March, so the same EUR 18 holds the gate open an hour later in June than it does in November. The sculpture museum inside closes at 17:00 in every season, last entry included. And the final cable car down leaves at 17:45, so anyone who stays for that extra summer hour returns to town by road.

On the free side, June behaves like December as far as we could verify. Children up to 6 ride the cable car at no charge, children up to 14 enter Monte Palace free with an adult, and school groups pay nothing. We found no June-only free admission at any of these sites. The Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira, on Caminho do Meio at Bom Sucesso, holds more than 2,000 exotic species; we could not verify its ticket price, so we quote none. The Mercado dos Lavradores opens 07:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and 07:00 to 14:00 on Saturday, closed Sundays and public holidays.

Funchal in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one belongs to Monte. Catch the 08:45 first cable car and buy the EUR 16 single, which puts you at Caminho das Babosas as the garden unlocks at 09:00, with 70,000 square meters largely to yourself and the sculpture museum done hours before its 17:00 close. Sledge down between 11:00 and noon, EUR 30 riding solo. Lunch in the old town, then the 15:00 English tour at Blandy’s on Avenida Arriaga, 45 minutes and three wines, out by four. Swim around five, when the water has had the day to reach its daily maximum, and eat outdoors at eight in full light.

Day two opens at the Mercado dos Lavradores from 07:00, and on a Saturday you go early, because the doors close at 14:00 and the afternoon plan becomes a locked gate. Sunday rewrites everything: the market is shut, the sledges do not run, and the Mercado da Penteada takes the morning from 07:00 to 13:00. If the month’s one rain day lands on you, the sledges fall first. Shift Blandy’s into the wet slot, 10:30 or 14:00 in English, indoors, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead if the forecast changes your mind.

Funchal in June vs May and July

Average low 61.2°F 64.8°F 67.5°F
Precipitation 1.07 in 0.31 in 0.07 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 3.3 1.0 0.3
Sea surface, daily maxima 69.9°F 71.6°F 75.0°F
Cruise passengers at the port 19,434 10,816 4,071

Across the three months the air climbs in even steps and the rain drains away: highs of 71.6°F in May, 74.7°F in June, 77.7°F in July, with monthly precipitation running 1.07 inches, then 0.31, then 0.07. Rain days at IPMA’s 0.04-inch threshold go 3.3, 1.0 and 0.3. The sea, on the marine series of 2015-2024 daily maxima, reads 69.9°F, 71.6°F and 75.0°F. Air and water are all from different instruments, and the table keeps them separate for that reason.

Move back four weeks and you give up 3.1°F of air and 1.7°F of water, and you take on more than three times the rain days, with 19,434 cruise passengers at the quay instead of 10,816 (our May page has the detail). Move forward four weeks and you gain 3.0°F of air, 3.4°F of sea, a month that records 0.07 inches of rain, and a port down to 3 ship calls. Nothing in the light is worth counting either way: June and July both run past nine in the evening.

Is June a good time to visit Funchal?

Yes for anyone whose trip runs on land. Days at 74.7°F, one rain day on the average month, dry ground under the sledges, and 14 hours 20 minutes of daylight add up to a city you can use from breakfast to nine at night. No for the traveler whose vacation is measured in hours in the sea: 71.6°F is a swim rather than a soak, and July is 3.4 degrees kinder about it.

If the water is the point, wait for July. It brings 75.0°F at the surface, 0.07 inches of rain, and a port that counted 3 cruise calls for the month, which is about as quiet as Funchal’s quayside gets. You lose no daylight worth noticing. We could not verify monthly lodging prices, so we make no claim about which of the two bills less, and our year-round Portugal verdict sets both against the mainland.

June’s own argument is the light: the longest days of the year, 14 hours 20 minutes on the 15th, paired with a month that records a single wet day. July warms the water. It does not lengthen the evening.

The last word

Decide on the water and the rest falls into place: if swimming is the trip, book July; if the trip is being outside from seven in the morning until nine at night, June already delivers it. One last piece of the puzzle for the long evenings, since the old-town market shuts at 19:00 on weekdays. The Mercado da Penteada stays open to 20:00 Monday through Thursday and to 21:00 on Friday, which in June means a Friday shop for fruit and black scabbardfish done entirely in daylight.
