Lagos in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Museum Hours

May hands Lagos an average high of 70.7°F, fourteen hours and thirteen minutes of daylight on the 15th, and a sea that averages 62.2°F. Two of those three numbers are generous. The third is what decides whether you come now or wait for June, when the water reads 65.3°F and the afternoons reach 75.0°F.

Rain is the clearest gain of the month: April averages 1.37 inches over 5.7 wet days, May 0.87 inches over 3.9. Everything about the town that does not move with the calendar, the marina, the old walls, the beach logistics, lives in our Lagos guide, and the country-wide calendar sits in the best-time verdict. The dated questions are what we take on here.

May gives Lagos 70.7°F afternoons, 3.9 wet days and fourteen hours of daylight, and asks you to accept a 62.2°F sea in exchange.

Go for: clifftop walking at noon, the Rota da Escravatura at 10:00 on Praça do Infante, and dinner outdoors under a 20:38 sunset.

Think twice before: booking a swimming vacation. The sea averages 62.2°F, and that average is taken from daily maxima, so a morning swim reads lower.

One caution before the numbers below. The nearest published station to Lagos sits at Sagres, on the windiest headland of the Algarve, 22.9 m above the sea. Its figures describe this coast and not the ground inland, which is colder and considerably wetter. Where a number comes from somewhere else, from a marine model or from the museum’s own page, we say so in the line that carries it.

Portugal’s national weather service, the IPMA, publishes the 1991-2020 normals we use, measured at station 533 in Sagres, 22.9 m up. That is a real thermometer with an altitude, not a model grid cell averaged over a square of coast, and the distinction matters when two websites hand you two different Mays. Its May reads 70.7°F by day, 57.0°F at night, 0.87 inches of rain across the month. Do not pack for a hill walk on a coastal reading.

An average May records rain on 3.9 days at the 1 mm threshold, which is 0.04 inch, and reaches 10 mm or more on half a day. Those are the IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch bar most American tables use, so the two counts do not swap. Translated into a trip: measurable rain about one day in eight, and something that genuinely soaks you roughly every second May. A wet morning costs you a beach, not a week.

Between the high and the low sits a spread of 13.7 degrees, and it lands squarely at the two ends of the day. A nine o’clock clifftop and a nine o’clock terrace both want a layer the afternoon does not. One sweater, one wind shell, swimwear that dries by morning, and the rest of the list is in the packing guide.

On May 15 the sun rises at 06:25 and sets at 20:38 local time, which is 05:25 and 19:38 UTC converted for Portuguese summer time, and gives 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight. Dinner at 19:30 still happens in full light. A drive back from the western beaches does not need headlights until close to nine, which is the practical reason this month suits people who want both a museum morning and a long evening.

Can you swim in Lagos in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Lagos averages 62.2°F in May, from the Open-Meteo marine series over 2015-2024. One nuance travels with that figure: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Whatever meets you at nine in the morning is likely a little under 62.

By American standards, 62.2°F is cold-water swimming, nearer the Northern California line than anything in Florida. Adults get in, gasp, swim for ten minutes and come out pleased with themselves. Children last longer than their parents expect and complain earlier than their parents hope. A shortie wetsuit turns a dip into an actual session, which is why May is a wetsuit month here and June, at 65.3°F, is still close to one.

We found no swell or wind statistics for Lagos, so we give none. The one wind fact we hold is where our thermometer lives: Sagres, the windiest point of the Algarve, which is a caution about reading its air figures as the town’s rather than a surf forecast. That headland has its own weather and its own day out, covered in our Sagres guide.

How busy is Lagos in May? Crowds, prices and booking

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Lagos, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can date is the calendar. May is the last full month before the Algarve’s summer, and June’s normals, 75.0°F with 0.15 inches of rain, are exactly what that summer sells. For what a week in Portugal costs at three tiers, the cost guide does the arithmetic.

We could not verify a booking lead time either, so we print no number of weeks. The shape of the trip is steadier than its prices: three or four nights in Lagos inside a wider Algarve week, Faro as the airport, and a car as the thing that turns a town into a coastline. Flights from the US, the rental rules and where to stay each carry their own detail.

On the municipal tourist tax, our position is the same: we could not verify a rate for Lagos, so no percentage and no per-night figure appears above. If one applies to your stay, your booking confirmation or the front desk will name it, and it is the kind of charge that lands at check-in rather than inside the advertised rate.

The one spend that changes this particular month is the car. Fourteen hours and thirteen minutes of daylight only pay you back if you can reach both ends of a day within them, and one of the Museu de Lagos’s seven sites, the Roman bath house at Praia da Luz, sits west of town rather than inside it. Tolls and insurance are the two traps, and our car guide handles both.

Things to do in Lagos in May: the Rota da Escravatura, Praia da Luz and the cliffs

At 70.7°F, the middle of the day belongs outdoors. Noon on a clifftop path is comfortable rather than an ordeal, and June already adds 4.3 degrees to that figure. The second thing May gives you is the 20:38 sunset: anything pushed to the evening still happens in daylight, which is not a claim April can make with its earlier sun and its 5.7 wet days.

The Rota da Escravatura, also called the Mercado de Escravos, stands on Praça do Infante and tells Lagos’s part in the fifteenth-century slave trade. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, last admission half an hour before closing. It is one of seven sites under the Museu de Lagos, alongside the main museum, the Dr. José Formosinho collection, the Centro de Documentação, the Armazém do Espingardeiro, the Forte Ponta da Bandeira and the Roman bath house at Praia da Luz. We could not read a stable price list for any of them, so we quote no admission fee.

The stones do not move with the season, the air does, and that gap is the whole argument for a spring visit: you step into the museum by choice, not to escape the heat. Two dates override the rest. The Forte Ponta da Bandeira, built between 1680 and 1690 to cover the quay and the eastern flank of the wall, is temporarily closed, stated on the museum’s own page as of 16 July 2026. And the Rota da Escravatura closes on 1 May, so the first of the month needs a different morning.

We hold no admission price for any of the seven sites, and no figure of any kind for Ponta da Piedade or the town beaches, so we name nothing free and quote nothing. What May adds to the unticketed half of a day is time. Light on the cliff paths lasts until 20:38, long after the museum has locked its door at six.

Lagos in May: a two-day itinerary

With sunrise at 06:25 there is no case for an alarm. Walk the cliffs from around 09:00, while the air is still climbing toward 70.7°F, then be on Praça do Infante at 10:00 as the Rota da Escravatura opens, and give it an hour. It shuts at 13:00 and reopens at 14:00, so a slow start costs you the morning entirely. Eat at 13:30. Swim in the afternoon, briefly, because the water reads 62.2°F. Book dinner outdoors for 20:00 and watch the sun go at 20:38.

Day two heads west to Praia da Luz for the Roman bath house, the site that justifies the rental car, and comes back for a second clifftop hour in the evening light. If the weather turns, and 3.9 days in May do, the Rota da Escravatura takes the 10:00 slot and the other indoor sites take what is left. We hold published hours only for the Rota, so call the museum before counting on the rest, and do not build a wet day around the fort while it stays closed.

Lagos in May vs April and June

Measure April May June
Average high 66.4°F 70.7°F 75.0°F
Average low 53.6°F 57.0°F 61.2°F
Precipitation 1.37 in 0.87 in 0.15 in
Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more 5.7 3.9 0.7
Sea surface, mean of daily maxima 61.8°F 62.2°F 65.3°F

Across the three months the afternoon climbs 8.6 degrees, from 66.4°F in April to 75.0°F in June, while the rain collapses: 1.37 inches, then 0.87, then 0.15. Wet days follow it down, 5.7 to 3.9 to 0.7. The sea is the laggard, 61.8°F to 62.2°F to 65.3°F, and those three readings come from the marine series over 2015-2024, not from the IPMA station that supplies every air figure above.

Moving four weeks earlier costs you 4.3 degrees off the afternoon and hands you nearly two extra wet days, with whatever April does to prices left unmeasured by us; April in Lagos argues its own case. Moving four weeks later buys 3.1 degrees of sea, 75.0°F days and a month with almost no rain in it, and puts you in the Algarve as its summer opens.

Is May a good time to visit Lagos?

Yes for walkers, drivers and museum mornings: 70.7°F afternoons and 3.9 wet days make a coast you can use from ten until eight. No for a family whose entire vacation is the water. A sea averaging 62.2°F, and averaging it from daily maxima at that, is a wetsuit sea, and no quantity of sunshine edits that reading.

If the water is the point, take June instead: 65.3°F offshore, 75.0°F in the afternoon, 0.15 inches of rain for the whole month, which is the driest of the three by a distance. What June costs you is that it is a summer month on this coast and May is not, and we hold no occupancy figures to tell you what that difference is worth in money.

May’s own claim is narrow and real: 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight on the 15th with the thermometer still under 71°F, so noon is usable outdoors and the sun is still up at half past eight.

The last word

Book the car, budget for the wetsuit, and set the only fixed appointment of the trip at 10:00 on Praça do Infante. Carry one thing in with you: in 2009, a dig at Vale da Gafaria, outside the walls and ahead of an underground car park, opened a modern-era refuse tip holding more than 150 human skeletons, confirmed as African people brought to Lagos as merchandise and discarded there with the town’s waste. May gives you fourteen hours of daylight. One of them belongs there.
