TAMPA · FLORIDA · THINGS TO DO
Tampa hands you a walkable core and a free line out of it. The Riverwalk runs 2.6 miles along the Hillsborough River, past the Tampa Museum of Art and the Tampa Bay History Center, and the TECO Line Streetcar carries you 2.7 miles from downtown into Ybor City for nothing at all. Out of town, the state counts what its parks hold, space by space and launch by launch: 350 parking spaces at Hillsborough River State Park, 50 at Alafia River, 2,021 at Honeymoon Island on the Gulf.
One gap to plan around. On September 11, 2026 the park and operator pages we needed either refused a machine read or returned an error, so no entrance fee and no opening hour is quoted below, and none is invented to fill the hole. Open the park’s own page in a browser, or call it, before a drive depends on the gate being open.

TAMPA AT A GLANCE · THINGS TO DO
Tampa’s strongest days are the car-free ones: 2.6 miles of Riverwalk, a free streetcar to Ybor City, three river parks within reach, and one Gulf beach day at Honeymoon Island for the morning you take the car.
RIVERWALK 2.6 MILES · STREETCAR FREE, EVERY 15 MIN · BUS CAPPED AT $4.00 A DAY
Go for: a downtown day without a parking garage, canoe launches counted three to a park at Hillsborough River, and 8.4 miles of trail at Little Manatee River.
Think twice before: driving to Alafia River State Park on a Saturday morning: the state counts 50 parking spaces there, against 350 at Hillsborough River.

January in Tampa averages a high of 71.3°F and 2.65 inches of rain. July averages a high of 91.0°F and 7.75 inches. Both sets come from NOAA station USW00012842, the gauge at Tampa International Airport, which sits inland on the bay side rather than out on sand, and every figure here carries that limit. For the month you have actually booked, go to January, July or the twelve-month view.
Walking the Tampa Riverwalk: 2.6 miles and what it links

The City of Tampa puts the Riverwalk at 2.6 miles of continuous path along the Hillsborough River. Along it sit the Tampa Convention Center, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Glazer Children’s Museum, the Tampa Bay History Center, Amalie Arena and Water Works Park. Seven anchors on one line means you can take two of them and skip the rest without ever doubling back on yourself.
Doing the center on foot removes the part of a Tampa day spent moving a car between stops that sit within 2.6 miles of one another. Families can put the Glazer Children’s Museum and the History Center in the same afternoon and walk the gap between them, which is a short one on a path this short. The Riverwalk also reaches the downtown end of the streetcar line, so the afternoon can continue into Ybor City with the car left where it slept.
Ybor City and the free streetcar from downtown
The TECO Line Streetcar costs nothing to board. HART, which operates it, and the City of Tampa both publish the fare as free, and the cars run every 15 minutes along a line of 2.7 miles.
Those 2.7 miles connect downtown Tampa to the Channel District and then to Ybor City, the old cigar quarter. Board at the downtown end, near where the Riverwalk runs, and the historic district arrives at the other end with no parking search attached to it.
A zero fare changes what a bad decision costs. Ride out to Ybor for an hour and come back, then go again after dinner: three boardings, still nothing spent. Add a HART bus day capped at $4.00 and a full day moving between downtown, the Channel District and Ybor City comes in under the price of parking a car once.
In the state’s 2024 facilities inventory, the entry for Ybor City Museum State Park carries a single figure: 311 feet of boardwalk. That is the scale of the stop, an hour inside one block rather than an afternoon with a picnic. Its admission and its hours were among the figures we could not read, so ask at the door and keep the rest of the afternoon loose.
Hillsborough, Alafia and Little Manatee parks near Tampa: parking, canoe launches and trail miles
Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection counted 350 parking spaces at Hillsborough River State Park in its 2024 inventory, plus 3 canoe, kayak and tube launches and 5 miles of hiking trail. Three launches on one river is the count that matters on a weekend morning: one group putting a boat in does not hold up the next two.
Alafia River State Park is counted at 50 parking spaces, 1 launch and 1.2 miles of hiking trail. Fifty spaces settle a Saturday before you have left the house, and Hillsborough River, with seven times the parking, absorbs what Alafia cannot. Keep Alafia for a weekday, or arrive there with the first cars.
Little Manatee River State Park lands between the two on parking, at 109 spaces, and ahead of both on foot: 8.4 miles of hiking trail against Alafia’s 1.2, seven times the distance, with 1 launch on the river. Take that mileage as the reason to drive past the other two when the point of the day is walking.
Honeymoon Island: the Gulf beach day trip from Tampa
On the Gulf northwest of the city, Honeymoon Island State Park is counted by the state at 2,021 parking spaces, 1 designated swimming area and 1,671 feet of boardwalk in the same 2024 inventory. That is nearly six times what Hillsborough River holds, and forty times Alafia River.
Set the counts side by side and the expected crowd shows up in the arithmetic: 350 spaces at Hillsborough River, 2,021 at Honeymoon Island, almost six times as many, feeding one designated swimming area and 1,671 feet of boardwalk. A lot built for two thousand cars fills from the top of the day, so an early arrival buys a space near the water rather than at the far end of it.
This is the day the car comes out of the garage. No transit fare or route to the island was readable in our sources, and the park charges an entrance fee whose amount we could not read either, so budget for it rather than assume. Pack shade and water for a beach with one designated swimming area, and read the Florida driving notes if this is your first rental in the state.
There are weeks when the drive does not repay itself. In January the sea off Tampa averages 63.0°F, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024 from the Open-Meteo marine series, and daylight on January 15 runs about 10 hours 36 minutes. That is a walk on 1,671 feet of boardwalk with a jacket on. July flips the problem: the water reaches 89.9°F, while the airport gauge records 7.75 inches of rain across 11.2 days with at least a tenth of an inch.
When the day is too short for the Gulf, the river does the job closer in. Hillsborough River State Park has 3 launches and 5 miles of trail, and Water Works Park sits on the Riverwalk itself. Farther north, the state counts 255 parking spaces and one designated swimming area at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, 197 spaces at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs and 77 at Crystal River Preserve. The spring water holds its temperature all year. The air above it does not.
Getting around Tampa without a car: the $4.00 daily cap
A HART bus ride costs $2.00 with a Flamingo Fares card, the app or a contactless bank card. The day is capped at $4.00: board twice and every ride after that costs nothing until the service day ends.
There is no day pass to buy in advance. The cap is earned on the second boarding, not sold at a counter, so a visitor hunting for a ticket before the first trip is hunting for a product that does not exist. Tap the same card or app every time and the system does the counting for you. Plan the day as if the third and fourth trips were already paid for, because they are.
HART runs the buses and the streetcar across Hillsborough County, which puts downtown, the Channel District and Ybor City on one operator. Beyond those two fares our reading came up empty: on September 11, 2026 gohart.org returned a 404, psta.net did not respond, and the airport site returned a 403. Fares for the Pinellas County side of the bay and for any airport transfer are absent here because we could not see them, so ask each operator directly before you count on a connection.
Cruises from Port Tampa Bay: which cruise lines sail from Tampa
Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five cruise lines. A homeport is a different trip from a port of call: ships based here begin and end their itineraries in Tampa, so you fly in, sleep in the city and sail out, instead of stepping ashore for a single afternoon with the ship idling. Your Tampa hours are therefore yours to schedule at either end of the sailing, and the Riverwalk fills one of them comfortably.
TPA boarded 12,075,591 passengers in calendar year 2024, enough for the FAA to class it a large hub. Put those arrivals and a five-line homeport in the same city and hotel nights get contested, above all on sailing days. Count the tax when you compare rates: Hillsborough County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on every night, collected alongside the 6% state sales tax, so 12% lands on the rate you were quoted, before any resort fee. That fee is set by the property and is not a tax. Our Florida lodging guide covers the rest.
