Port Antonio in April: Weather, Sea Temperature and Rain Days

April gives Port Antonio its lightest rain of the spring stretch: 2.58 inches in an average April, down from 3.81 in March and well under the 5.99 that May brings. The harbor town on Jamaica’s north-east shoulder stays green all year, and in April you get that green with more dry mornings than either neighbor month offers.

The sea is already warm at 82.9°F, the sun is up before six, and evenings hold their light until past six. One caveat travels with every number: Port Antonio sits in the rainiest corner of the island, so a drier month here still carries 7.6 wet days. Pack for a shower, plan the mountain day for a morning, and April treats you well.

April is the driest of Port Antonio’s three spring months, with warm swimmable water and long days, so it suits a beach-and-heritage trip that keeps a rain plan in its pocket.

Go for: warm-water swims, dry mornings for the Blue and John Crow Mountains, and a heritage walk across the Titchfield Peninsula before the heat builds.

Think twice before: planning a trip with no indoor fallback. Roughly one April day in four still records measurable rain in this wet corner of Jamaica.

Port Antonio weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days

Our normals come from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis for 1991-2020, computed for a grid cell at 18.18° N, 76.45° W over Port Antonio. A reanalysis is a model estimate for a patch of ground, and no airport thermometer stands behind it. By that source, April averages a high of 82.1°F, a low of 73.5°F and 2.58 inches of precipitation. The cell sits over the wet north-eastern end of Jamaica, the island’s rainiest corner, so read these as Port Antonio’s figures and keep them away from the drier north-west coast.

An average April counts 7.6 days with at least a tenth of an inch of rain, so a wet day turns up roughly once every four. Heavy rain is rare: days reaching an inch or more average 0.1 in April, about one such downpour every ten Aprils. Most wet days therefore bring a shower you can wait out under a veranda, and a full day lost indoors is the exception.

Highs and lows sit 8.6°F apart, and even the night floor of 73.5°F stays warm enough for short sleeves at dinner. Pack light cotton and linen, one thin long-sleeved layer against mosquitoes at dusk, and a compact rain shell for those 7.6 wet days. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest.

On April 15 the sun rises at 5:47 a.m. and sets at 6:23 p.m. local time, according to sunrise-sunset.org, for about 12 hours 36 minutes of daylight. Full dark follows soon after sunset in the tropics, so plan any drive back from the hills to reach town before about 6:30 p.m.

Can you swim in Port Antonio in April? Sea temperature

Yes. Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Port Antonio at 82.9°F in April, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Tables built on round-the-clock means may quote a slightly lower April number, and both can be correct for what they measure.

In practice the water sits close to the 82.1°F afternoon air, so walking in brings no shock and an hour of snorkeling needs no wetsuit. Early swimmers meet the sea before it reaches its daily peak, a little below the 82.9°F figure, and children tend to stay in longer by mid-afternoon.

We found no wind or swell series for Port Antonio in April, so we cannot say how often the surf runs rough. Ask a lifeguard or your host about conditions on the day, swim where others swim, and read our Jamaica safety guide before heading to an unguarded cove.

How busy is Port Antonio in April? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel-rate or occupancy series for Port Antonio, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. For the island-wide season pattern and what a week costs in each tier, our Jamaica trip cost guide and best time to visit carry the detail.

Port Antonio has a small stock of guesthouses and villas compared with Montego Bay or Ocho Rios, so the room you want can go early. We have no booking-lead data to give a number of weeks. Book once your April dates are fixed, choose a refundable rate, and line up your airport transfer at the same time.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Port Antonio, so we give no percentage. Ask the property whether its quoted nightly rate already includes government tax and service charges before you pay a deposit.

If one line of the budget deserves more money in April, make it a car or a hired driver for a dry morning inland. With 7.6 wet days in the month, the freedom to move the Blue and John Crow Mountains trip to whichever morning dawns clear decides whether you see them at all. Our driving in Jamaica guide covers the roads.

Things to do in Port Antonio in April

April gives outdoor plans their best odds of the spring: 7.6 wet days against 8.6 in March and 13.3 in May. That margin matters most for anything inland, where a morning can close in quickly, and for long harborside walks that lose their appeal in a downpour.

Start on the Titchfield Peninsula, the first place in the area settled by the English and the oldest part of Port Antonio. Fort George stands there, near DeMontevin Lodge, an eclectic Victorian building. In town, the Court House went up in 1895, and Christ Church, the Portland Parish Church, stands on land indentured on 3 September 1836. East of the harbor, Folly Point Lighthouse dates from 1888, its masonry tower built to be fireproof.

Inland rise the Blue and John Crow Mountains, Jamaica’s first UNESCO World Heritage site since 2015: 26,251.6 hectares (about 101 square miles) running from 850 to 2,256 meters, roughly 2,790 to 7,400 feet. Our 82.1°F high describes the coastal cell only, and we hold no figure for the heights. The town’s stone buildings look the same in any month. What April changes is the sky over them, with fewer wet days to break up a walk or a mountain drive. More in our Blue Mountains guide.

Viewing the peninsula’s houses, the Court House and the lighthouse from the street costs nothing. We could not verify opening hours or admission fees for any Port Antonio heritage site, nor a raft rate on the Rio Grande, so confirm both locally before you set out.

Port Antonio in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Be on the Titchfield Peninsula by 6:30 a.m., under an hour after the 5:47 sunrise, to walk past Fort George and DeMontevin Lodge while the air sits near its 73.5°F low. Coffee in town, then the 1895 Court House and Christ Church by 9 a.m. Swim from late morning into early afternoon, when the sea nears its 82.9°F daily peak. Head out to Folly Point Lighthouse around 5 p.m. and stay for the 6:23 p.m. sunset.

Day two. Leave by 7 a.m. for the Blue and John Crow Mountains and Moore Town, whose Maroon heritage UNESCO inscribed in 2008, and aim to be back on the coast before 6:30 p.m. If the morning opens wet, swap the days: do the town walk under an umbrella, keep the sea for the afternoon, and push the mountains to your next clear morning. Longer routes that fold in Port Antonio are in our 7-day Jamaica itinerary.

Port Antonio in April vs March and May

Measure March April May
Average high 80.4°F 82.1°F 83.1°F
Average low 72.2°F 73.5°F 75.3°F
Precipitation 3.81 in 2.58 in 5.99 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 8.6 7.6 13.3
Sea surface (daily maxima, 2015-2024) 81.8°F 82.9°F 84.4°F

From the same ERA5 cell and period, April runs 1.7°F warmer than March by day and 1.3°F warmer at night, with 1.23 inches less rain and one fewer wet day. May adds another degree to the high and 1.8°F to the low, but its 5.99 inches are more than double April’s total, spread over 13.3 wet days. At sea, the Marine API climbs from 81.8°F in March through 82.9°F in April to 84.4°F in May.

Move four weeks earlier and you trade 1.1°F of sea warmth for slightly cooler walking weather, with a little more rain. Move four weeks later and the water gains 1.5°F, but you accept almost six extra wet days. For a trip built around one clear mountain morning, April holds the better odds of the three. Month details: Port Antonio in March and Port Antonio in May.

Is April a good time to visit Port Antonio?

Yes, for swimmers, walkers and anyone planning an inland day, since April pairs 82.9°F water with the fewest wet days of the spring. It suits less well a traveler who wants guaranteed dry weather: this corner of Jamaica still logs rain on roughly one day in four, and a week with no shower is unlikely.

If rain is the deal-breaker, March is the nearer alternative, cooler by 1.7°F and only one wet day heavier. If warm water tops the list, May’s 84.4°F sea is the warmest of the three, at the cost of 5.99 inches of rain. Before any spring booking, read our update on Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa and check what has reopened.

Of March, April and May, April alone combines sea surface above 82°F with fewer than eight wet days.

The last word

The decision that matters in April is keeping one morning free to move. Leave the mountain day unassigned, watch the sky at 5:47 a.m., and go the first morning it dawns clear. Save part of it for Charles Town near Buff Bay, a Maroon settlement that emerged around 1754, or for Moore Town, still governed by a Colonel whose honorary title his ancestors won. Then come back down to an 82.9°F sea and a 6:23 p.m. sunset.
