NEGRIL · OCTOBER · 18.27° N
October in Negril is warm water under a busy sky. The month averages a high of 84.2°F and a low of 77.8°F, the sea off the coast runs 88.4°F, and 4.39 inches of rain fall across roughly a dozen days. October also sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season that NOAA runs from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October.
Four weeks later the picture moves further than the thermometer suggests: November holds 83.3°F afternoons but cuts the rain to 2.02 inches over 4.4 days. Deciding whether that trade is worth shifting your dates is the job of the normals below, the sea figures, and the three-month table further down.

If the open question is which town rather than which month, Montego Bay versus Negril and Negril versus Ocho Rios settle it, and the twelve-month verdict for Jamaica ranks the calendar country-wide. October in Negril starts with the normals below.
Negril weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | October in Negril |
|---|---|
| Average high | 84.2°F |
| Average low | 77.8°F |
| Rainfall | 4.39 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.9 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.5 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 88.4°F |
| Daylight, October 15 | 11h 46m |
| Sunrise / sunset, October 15 | 6:06 am / 5:51 pm |
Every figure here comes from the Open-Meteo / ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 normals computed for the grid cell at 18.2683° N, 78.3475° W. That is a model output for a square of coast and water, not a thermometer standing at an airport, and the two can disagree, most often on the overnight low. With that stated: October in Negril averages 84.2°F by day, 77.8°F before dawn, and 4.39 inches of rain over the month.
Just under twelve days in an average October, 11.9 of them, record at least 0.10 inch of precipitation. That is measurable rain about two days in five. Only 0.5 day brings an inch or more, so a genuine soaking lands in roughly one October out of two. We found no hourly breakdown for Negril, so we cannot tell you whether that rain prefers the afternoon: plan each day with a covered fallback and treat a dry week as luck rather than schedule.
The gap between 84.2°F and 77.8°F is 6.4 degrees, a smaller day-night swing than most American visitors pack for. Nothing in that spread calls for a sweater. It calls for a rain shell light enough to carry all day, sandals that survive a downpour, and a dry bag for a phone. The rest of the list sits in what to pack for Jamaica.
Daylight on October 15 runs about 11 hours 46 minutes. Converted to Jamaica time, the sun clears the horizon at 6:06 am and drops at 5:51 pm, which puts full dark over dinner rather than after it. A boat trip, a drive along the West End, a last swim: anything that needs sunlight has to start by four.
Can you swim in Negril in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Negril averages 88.4°F in October, measured as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024 in the Open-Meteo Marine model. Read the label carefully: it takes the warmest reading of each day and averages those, so a straight 24-hour mean would come out a shade cooler, and the water at 7 am is not the water at 4 pm. Even discounted for that, the number stays in the high 80s.
At that temperature there is no gasp on entry and no clock on how long children stay in. The trade is that water this warm returns almost none of your heat, so a long snorkel under 84.2°F air will not cool you down. Shade between swims and water in the bag do the work sunscreen cannot. Reef shoes matter more on the West End’s limestone than on the sand.
We found no wind or wave series for Negril, so we publish no swell or surf figure for October. The calendar we can date is NOAA’s: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaks on September 10, and sees most of its activity between mid-August and mid-October, which puts the first half of the month inside the busy stretch. Check the tropics the week you fly, and read our hurricane-season guide before you pay for anything non-refundable.
How busy is Negril in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We could not verify an occupancy series or a monthly room-rate index for Negril, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. The only dated cycle we hold is NOAA’s storm season, June 1 to November 30, and October falls inside it. For what a week in Jamaica costs with figures we can source, see our trip-cost breakdown.
No booking-window study for Negril reached us either, so we give no number of weeks in advance. In a month carrying 11.9 wet days and a storm calendar overhead, the rule we do apply is simple: reserve a room you can cancel, buy the fare class that lets you move, and keep flight and hotel on the same flexible footing. Gateways and flight patterns sit in our flights guide, and the ride west from Montego Bay is covered in airport transfers.
We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation-tax rate or any departure levy, so no percentage appears anywhere here. Ask the property to quote the all-in nightly total in writing before you pay a deposit, and ask the same question of any transfer you prebook.
If you spend extra on one thing this month, spend it on covered outdoor space. A room with a deep verandah, or a property whose restaurant and bar sit under a roof, turns a twenty-minute shower into a pause rather than a lost afternoon. Which stretch of town suits which traveler is laid out in our where-to-stay guide.
Things to do in Negril in October: Seven Mile Beach and the West End cliffs

Of the three months we hold sea data for, September reads 88.9°F, October 88.4°F and November 86.3°F. October keeps September’s water almost intact while the air drops 1.6 degrees, from 85.8°F to 84.2°F. Near-peak water under a slightly cooler afternoon is what the month has over its neighbors, and it applies to snorkeling, boat days and long swims alike.
Seven Mile Beach runs north from the roundabout and is the town’s swimming side. The West End cliffs, strung along West End Road, are the jumping and sunset side. Inland, the Royal Palm Reserve sits in the Great Morass, and the Negril Lighthouse stands at the far end of the West End road. We did not verify current hours or entry fees for the reserve or the lighthouse, so we quote none: call the morning you plan to go.
Between September and October the sea moves half a degree while the sky does the changing. With 4.39 inches falling across 11.9 days, a trail through the Great Morass can be soft underfoot in a way it is not in November, when the monthly total drops to 2.02 inches. Take repellent, take shoes you can rinse, and keep the cliffs for late afternoon once the rock has cooled.
We found no October-only free event for Negril, so we name none. What costs nothing on any day of the month is a walk on Seven Mile Beach and the 5:51 pm sunset from a public stretch of the West End road. Several cliff bars charge for access or set a minimum spend, and we could not verify any of those amounts.
Negril in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one follows the light. Out at 6:06 am for the quiet end of Seven Mile Beach while the air is still near 77.8°F, in the water before nine, and under a roof through the 84.2°F middle of the day. Go back in around four, then drive to the West End by five for the 5:51 pm sunset. Dark arrives before dinner whatever you plan, so book the table for seven.
Day two turns inland while it can: the Great Morass and the Royal Palm Reserve in the morning, the lighthouse on the way back, then a boat trip or a long snorkel in 88.4°F water. If the sky closes in, and on 11.9 days a month it will, flip the order. With only 0.5 day in an average October reaching an inch of rain, most wet days are showers rather than washouts, and a covered lunch plus a four o’clock swim recovers the afternoon.
Negril in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 85.8°F | 84.2°F | 83.3°F |
| Average low | 78.7°F | 77.8°F | 76.6°F |
| Rainfall | 4.43 in | 4.39 in | 2.02 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.8 | 11.9 | 4.4 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 88.9°F | 88.4°F | 86.3°F |
On temperature October sits between its neighbors, and on rain it sits with September. Afternoons run 1.6 degrees below September’s 85.8°F and 0.9 above November’s 83.3°F. Rainfall is effectively tied with September, 4.39 inches against 4.43, over 11.9 wet days against 11.8, and comes to more than double November’s 2.02 inches spread over 4.4 days. The sea gives up 0.5 degrees from September and holds 2.1 above November.
Moving four weeks later buys the biggest single change available: 7.5 fewer days with measurable rain, at a cost of 0.9 degrees of afternoon air and 2.1 degrees of sea. Moving four weeks earlier keeps the same rain, gains half a degree of water, and puts September 10, the season’s statistical peak, in the middle of the trip. The full year is ranked in the best time to visit Jamaica.
Is October a good time to visit Negril?
Yes for swimmers, divers and anyone whose dates can bend: 88.4°F water, 84.2°F afternoons, and a sea that stays warm from breakfast to dusk. No for a fully prepaid week with small children and no covered fallback, because 11.9 wet days and a date inside the storm season sit badly with a schedule that cannot move.
For those travelers, November is the month to shift to. Rain drops to 2.02 inches over 4.4 days, just over a third of October’s wet-day count, and the sea only falls to 86.3°F. November still sits inside NOAA’s official season, which closes on November 30, but it lands past the mid-October end of the busiest stretch.
Among the three months we can document, October alone pairs a sea within half a degree of September’s 88.9°F with afternoons 1.6 degrees cooler than September’s.
The last word
Book the rate you can cancel, keep one covered lunch spot in reserve, and stop refreshing a forecast a month out, because it cannot see that far. Carry one number into the trip: at 88.4°F the sea runs 4.2 degrees warmer than the average October afternoon of 84.2°F, which makes the water the warmest thing you will touch at 6:30 in the morning. Then check what has reopened since Hurricane Melissa before you confirm anything.
