NEGRIL · AUGUST · 18.27° N
Negril in August runs hot by day, warm all night, and warmest of all in the water: average high 86.6°F, average low 78.9°F, 3.37 inches of rain spread over roughly ten wet days, and a sea averaging 88.7°F. The light holds until 6:41 pm mid-month, long enough for a second swim after five.
What the month costs you sits on the calendar rather than in the sky. NOAA runs the Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to November 30 and puts most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so the back half of the month falls inside the busy stretch. That argues for a movable fare and a refundable room, not for staying home. Our hurricane-season guide handles the storm side in detail.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · NEGRIL IN AUGUST
August gives you the warmest water of the summer and rain that comes in short bursts, in exchange for booking inside the hurricane season’s most active weeks.
HOT AND HUMID · SEA AT 88.7°F · INSIDE THE STORM WINDOW
Go for: water at 88.7°F, July-level heat, sunset at 6:41 pm and a long swimming day at both ends.
Think twice before: paying non-refundable rates, since NOAA concentrates most Atlantic activity from mid-August to mid-October.

One caveat before every figure here. We found no airport weather station for Negril, so the normals come from a model reanalysis of the grid cell at 18.27° N, 78.35° W rather than from a thermometer in town. Station records and reanalysis do not always agree, and the gap usually shows up on the overnight low. Read 78.9°F as a close approximation.

The normals above are Open-Meteo’s ERA5 figures for 1991 to 2020: 86.6°F by day, 78.9°F at night, 3.37 inches of rain across the month. ERA5 is a reanalysis from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, computed on a grid cell rather than logged at a gauge, and we name it in the body because a station normal and a model normal are not the same animal.
Ten point two days in an average August record at least 0.10 inch, so measurable rain turns up about one day in three. Spread the 3.37-inch total across those days and the average wet day carries roughly a third of an inch: a shower with a start and a finish, not a lost afternoon. Genuine soakers are rare here, 0.1 day per August at an inch or more, which works out to about one August in ten.
Day to night the thermometer moves 7.7°F, from 86.6 down to 78.9, and that narrow band is the whole range your bag has to cover. Nothing in it needs to be warm. What it needs is a second shirt for the humidity, a sun layer for long water time, and shoes that survive a downpour without complaint. Our packing list covers the rest, including the reef-safe rules.
On August 15 the sun rises at 5:54 am and sets at 6:41 pm local time, Jamaica sitting on UTC-5 year round with no clock change, for 12 hours 47 minutes of daylight. Full dark follows within the hour. An 8 am swim and a 5:30 pm swim both land in decent light, and the sunset hour on the cliffs is the one fixed appointment of a Negril day.
Can you swim in Negril in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Negril averages 88.7°F in August in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015 to 2024. One qualifier belongs with that number: it averages the daily maximum, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Call the water upper-80s and you are right either way.
At 88.7°F there is no entry shock and no minute spent standing at waist depth talking yourself into it. The water is close to skin temperature, which means it will not cool you after an 86.6°F afternoon: shade and a breeze do that job. It also means a two-hour float costs you nothing but sun, so a rash guard does more for you than a towel.
Wind and swell we cannot give you. Our sources carry no monthly wind or wave normals for this stretch of coast, so we publish no figures for either. The storm calendar is dated, though: NOAA’s season runs June 1 to November 30, peaks on September 10, and concentrates most activity from mid-August onward, the one water-related reason to read a forecast here instead of an average.
How busy is Negril in August? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
August is Caribbean high summer, and that is as far as our evidence on demand goes. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Negril, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. The calendar is firmer: the month sits wholly inside NOAA’s hurricane season, and its second half falls inside the mid-August to mid-October window the agency flags as the most active part of that season.
Booking follows from the storm window rather than from any lead-time number, and we could not verify how far ahead Negril rooms fill in August, so we name no count of weeks. The move that costs nothing is choosing terms you can change: a refundable room rate, a fare with a published change policy, insurance bought before any storm is named. Our flights page covers the US routes into Montego Bay.
We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation tax rate or how it is banded by room price, so we give no percentage and no per-night dollar figure. Ask the property what goes on the folio at checkout and read the total instead of the nightly headline. Our trip-cost page sets out the rest of the spending, from transfers to restaurant tiers.
One budget line changes this month more than any other: air conditioning, plus the shade around it. With the nightly low at 78.9°F, a fan-only room stays at beach temperature until sunrise, and 12 hours 47 minutes of daylight leave a long middle of the day to spend somewhere cool. Pay for the cross-breeze, the covered terrace or the working unit, then economize on the ride from the airport with a shared transfer.
Things to do in Negril in August: Seven Mile Beach, the West End cliffs and Booby Cay

The month buys water time. At 88.7°F the sea sits a degree above July’s 87.5°F and within 0.2°F of September’s 88.9°F, and the day still runs 12 hours 47 minutes, so a snorkeling morning and a second swim after five fit inside one day without either feeling rushed. Rain arrives in bursts rather than in fronts, so the plan below keeps a roof within reach at midday and nothing else.
The named stops are short in Negril: Seven Mile Beach for the long shallow swim and the sunset walk, the West End cliffs for deeper water and ladders down into it, the Negril Lighthouse at the far end of the West End, Booby Cay offshore for a boat morning, and Rick’s Café for the cliff-jumping crowd at sundown. We could not verify current admission prices, opening hours or boat fares for any of them, so we quote none. Our things-to-do guide keeps the wider list.
Those places barely notice the month, and the sea hardly does either: it moves 1.4°F across July, August and September. The air and the sky do the seasonal work. At 86.6°F by day with measurable rain one day in three, a noon swim brings no relief and a shower can close a boat morning, while the cliffs at 6 pm stay warm enough that nobody reaches for a layer.
Free in August is what is free all year: the beach walk, the 6:41 pm sunset from sand or cliff top, the swim itself. We found no dated August festival, no free-admission day and no seasonal event for Negril, so we list none rather than guess at one. If an event matters to your dates, ask your property, and check the country calendar for the wider year.
Negril in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs ahead of the heat. Out at 6:30 am, with the sun up since 5:54, for an hour on Seven Mile Beach before the sand turns hostile. Breakfast at eight, water from nine to eleven while the air is still short of its 86.6°F high. Noon to three under cover, indoors or on a shaded terrace. Back in the sea at four, on the West End by six, sunset at 6:41 pm, dinner after dark.
Day two swaps the beach for a boat morning out toward Booby Cay, then repeats the same afternoon retreat, this time on the cliffs instead of the sand. If the sky turns, hold the arithmetic in mind: an average wet day here carries about a third of an inch, so waiting under a roof usually beats rebooking the day. Save any drive for clear light, and read our driving notes before you take one on in rain.
Negril in August vs July and September
| July | August | September | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 86.7°F | 86.6°F | 85.8°F |
| Average low | 78.7°F | 78.9°F | 78.7°F |
| Precipitation | 2.60 in | 3.37 in | 4.43 in |
| Wet days (0.10 in or more) | 7.8 | 10.2 | 11.8 |
| Sea surface (daily max) | 87.5°F | 88.7°F | 88.9°F |
The three months sit closer together than their reputations suggest. July and August share the same daytime figure to a tenth, 86.7°F and 86.6°F, and September gives back all of 0.8°F at 85.8°F. Rain does the separating: 2.60 inches, then 3.37, then 4.43, with wet days climbing 7.8, 10.2, 11.8. The water warms right through the run, 87.5°F to 88.7°F to 88.9°F.
Move four weeks earlier and you buy 2.4 fewer wet days and three-quarters of an inch less rain, at the cost of 1.2°F of sea warmth. Move four weeks later and you gain 0.2°F in the water, take on 1.6 more wet days, and land your trip beside September 10, the date NOAA puts at the season’s peak. July is the driest of the three, August the middle, September the one carrying both the most rain and that peak. Our July page runs the same columns.
Is August a good time to visit Negril?
Yes, with one condition attached. If you want warm water, long light and a trip you can move, the month delivers: 88.7°F sea, 12 hours 47 minutes of daylight on the 15th, showers averaging about a third of an inch when they come. No, if your dates are locked and the money is non-refundable, or if you need a run of reliably dry days for a wedding or a dive course, because 10.2 wet days is one day in three.
For that second reader, July beats September. The daytime heat is identical to a tenth of a degree, the rain drops to 2.60 inches against August’s 3.37, wet days fall to 7.8 from 10.2, and the water is only 1.2°F cooler. It also sits ahead of the mid-August to mid-October stretch NOAA flags. If neither summer month suits, the twelve-month verdict ranks the rest.
August’s own trade is July’s heat with almost September’s water: 86.6°F air, 88.7°F sea, and the storm calendar not yet at its peak date.
The last word
Book the movable room and the movable fare, put the two hottest hours of each afternoon under a roof, and Negril in August behaves. One figure we have kept back for the decision: the overnight low hardly budges across the run, 78.7°F in July, 78.9°F in August, 78.7°F in September, so the air conditioning costs you the same argument in all three. Which leaves the choice where the rain column puts it, at 2.60, 3.37 and 4.43 inches.
