Montego Bay in September: Weather, Sea Temperature, Prices and Hurricane Risk

The sea off Montego Bay averages 88.7°F in September, warmer than in either August or October, and the air above it sits at 86.4°F by day and 76.3°F overnight. The catch is in the same column of numbers: 8.07 inches of rain, spread across 21 days that record at least a tenth of an inch. September 10 is also the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

You have already picked the bay, so the only thing left to settle is the date. September decides whether you book refundable, how much of each day belongs to the water, and whether the flight is better moved four weeks either way. The wider storm picture lives in our hurricane season guide, and the twelve-month view in when to visit Jamaica.

September hands Montego Bay the warmest water of the late-summer trio at 88.7°F and the heaviest rain of it at 8.07 inches, so book refundable and give every day an indoor half.

Go for: swimming at 88.7°F, a 12 hour 16 minute day on September 15, and Rose Hall’s US$35 night tour starting at 18:30, after the 6:14 pm sunset.

Think twice before: paying non-refundable. The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, and 21 days in an average September record measurable rain.

One caveat before the numbers start working: every figure here for temperature and rain comes from a model reanalysis of the grid cell over Montego Bay, not from the thermometer at Sangster International. It is the best continuous record we could read, and it is not a station log.

The normals come from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis for the cell at 18.4762° N, 77.8939° W, over 1991 to 2020: 86.4°F by day, 76.3°F at night, 8.07 inches of rain. Reanalysis and airport stations disagree most on the overnight low, so read 76.3°F as the shape of a September night rather than as a reading anyone took. The daytime figure is the sturdier of the two.

Twenty-one days at a tenth of an inch or more works out to rain on roughly seven days in ten. A tenth of an inch is a shower you wait out under an awning. The same record gives only 0.7 day per September at an inch or more, so the all-day soaking is the exception, not the pattern. Book the things with fixed openings for the early slots and let the rain find you later.

Day to night, the spread is 10.1°F. Nothing in that gap calls for a sweater, and the packing problem in September is water, not cold: clothes that dry between wearings, a dry bag for the raft trip, shoes you do not mind soaking. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest of the kit.

On September 15 the sun rises at 5:58 am and sets at 6:14 pm Jamaica time, 12 hours 16 minutes apart. An activity that wraps at 6:00 pm finishes in daylight. One that runs to 7:00 pm finishes under lights, which matters when the return drive is unfamiliar and the roads are new to you.

Can you swim in Montego Bay in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Yes, and warmly. The sea surface averages 88.7°F in September, taken from the Open-Meteo marine model as the mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024. That makes it a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would be. Tables that publish the 24-hour mean will show a lower number for the same water, and neither figure is wrong.

In practice, at that temperature there is no gasp on entry and no acclimation lap. Children stay in until someone drags them out, and the water does little to cool you against 86.4°F air, so the drinking bottle matters more than the towel. At Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, admission is US$8 for anyone 12 and over and US$4 for younger children, with customer service running Monday to Sunday, 08:30 to 17:30.

We found no wind or swell series for September off Montego Bay, so we publish no figure for either. What is dated is the storm calendar: the Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10. Watch the basin rather than the local forecast in the week before departure, and read our hurricane season page before the final payment goes through.

How busy is Montego Bay in September? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

September falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, with its statistical peak on the 10th. That is the one seasonal marker we can put a date on. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Montego Bay, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. Our trip cost guide works in components, which is the only way we can price a Jamaican week without inventing a curve.

Refundability earns more than lead time in this particular month. We could not verify a booking lead-time figure for the bay, so we give no number of weeks. What holds regardless: take the cancellable rate over the prepaid one, keep a flight change in hand, and check advisories in the days before you fly. If your search turns up recovery questions, our post-Melissa page tracks what reopened and when.

Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per night on each occupied room and scaled to the property, not to the traveler: US$1 at a property of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 from 51 to 100, US$4 at 101 rooms and above. Complimentary rooms attract it too. Separately, the government announced a US$20 fee on each arriving air passenger whose trip begins abroad, effective August 1, 2012. We could not reconfirm that amount on a current government page, so take it with its 2012 date attached.

With rain on 21 days, the upgrade that changes September is the one that removes a wet arrival. Two companies are authorised at Sangster International, JUTA and JCAL, and they share a single Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside the Customs exit. The airport publishes no fare table, and the numbers circulating on booking sites are not the operator’s, so ask for the quote at the desk. Compare it against the transfer options before you commit.

Things to do in Montego Bay in September

Against its two neighbors, September owns the warmest water: 88.7°F, against 88.0 in August and 88.2 in October. It also delivers usable dark by dinner time. Rose Hall’s Haunted Night Tour runs Wednesday to Saturday from 18:30 to 20:30 at US$35, and with the sun down at 6:14 pm on September 15, that 18:30 start is genuinely after nightfall rather than at dusk.

The named, priced fixtures: Doctor’s Cave Beach at US$8 and US$4, service desk 08:30 to 17:30, seven days. Rose Hall Great House for the Day and Garden Tour at US$30 per adult, Monday to Saturday from 09:15 to 16:00, 45 minutes to an hour on site. And Rafting the Martha Brae, US$99 for visitors or J$13,000 with a valid Jamaican ID, three miles of river in about an hour and a quarter, open daily including public holidays from 09:00 to 16:00.

The sea at Doctor’s Cave barely registers the calendar: 88.0, 88.7 and 88.2°F across the three months. The air and the rain are what move. September’s 8.07 inches runs 1.53 inches above August’s, and the raft operator says outright that the ride’s length depends on the state of the water. Since guests are processed in order of arrival and no booking buys a queue position, the 09:00 opening is the only lever you hold.

We could not verify a free-admission day or a dated September event in Montego Bay, so we name none. One price we also refuse to print: Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle, publishes nothing we could read at source, and three resale sites quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket. Carry cash and ask at the gate.

Montego Bay in September: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the beach clock. Doctor’s Cave opens its desk at 08:30, US$8 for anyone 12 and over, and the water is already at 88.7°F. Take the middle of the day inland: the Day and Garden Tour at Rose Hall costs US$30, runs Monday to Saturday from 09:15 to 16:00, and puts 45 minutes to an hour under a roof while the sky decides what it wants. Sunset lands at 6:14 pm, which sets the dinner hour without any negotiation.

Day two belongs to the river. Rafting the Martha Brae opens at 09:00, every day including public holidays, at US$99 per visitor, with cards accepted and arrival order deciding the rest. Be there at nine. If the weather turns, and one day in ten comes with real rain, move the outdoor block to the evening: the US$35 night tour at Rose Hall, 18:30 to 20:30, Wednesday to Saturday, or the Luminous Lagoon after dark.

Montego Bay in September vs August and October

Measure August September October

Average low 76.8°F 76.3°F 75.4°F
Precipitation 6.54 in 8.07 in 7.28 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 18.7 21.0 18.4
Sea, mean of daily maxima 88.0°F 88.7°F 88.2°F

September runs 0.7°F cooler by day than August and 1.7°F warmer than October. It is the wettest of the three on both counts: 1.53 inches more rain than August, 0.79 more than October, and 21.0 wet days against 18.7 and 18.4. It also holds the warmest water of the trio at 88.7°F, half a degree above October and 0.7 above August. All five rows come from the same reanalysis and the same marine model, so the comparisons are like for like.

Shift four weeks forward and you trade 1.7°F of daytime heat and 0.5°F of water for 2.6 fewer wet days and three quarters of an inch less rain, with the season still open until November 30. Shift back to August and you gain 2.3 drier days but travel closer to the peak date of September 10. Our August page and October page run the same numbers from their own side.

Is September a good time to visit Montego Bay?

Yes for swimmers and for anyone who can move a booking. Water at 88.7°F, a 12-hour day, and paid attractions that open at 08:30 and 09:00 add up to a good week. No if the vacation is one fixed, prepaid week built around an outdoor centerpiece with no fallback, or if someone in the group needs dry mornings on a named date.

When the answer is no, October is the nearest fix: 84.7°F days, 18.4 wet days against 21.0, 7.28 inches against 8.07, and the sea still sitting at 88.2°F. It stays inside the hurricane season until November 30, so the refundable-rate rule travels with you. For the dry-season months, take the twelve-month verdict and plan the flight around it.

Among the three, only September puts 88.7°F water under a 12 hour 16 minute day and leaves the 18:30 night tour starting well after a 6:14 pm sunset.

The last word

Settle the cancellation policy before you settle on the resort, and September stops being a gamble and starts being the warmest swimming week of the late summer. One last practical note for the ground: if you take a car on the street instead of the Authorised Airport Taxi desk, the Transport Authority lists five marks, not one. A red PPV plate, a roof globe reading Taxi, route details on the front doors, a checked color code 10 cm high in 2.5 cm squares, and a driver wearing a Transport Authority badge with the Driver Identification Card in the vehicle.
