Montego Bay in June: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and Costs

Montego Bay’s June is hot and wet in the same breath: average highs of 86.6°F, nights that bottom out near 76.1°F, 5.82 inches of rain spread over 15.5 wet days, and a sea surface averaging 86.5°F. Pack for heat and showers, and build an itinerary that can move an afternoon under a roof without losing the day.

One date does more to a June booking than any of those figures. NOAA opens the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1, with the peak on September 10 and most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so June sits inside the season and well ahead of its busiest weeks. That is an argument for refundable rates, not for a different month (the season, month by month).

June hands Montego Bay a sea at 86.5°F and more than thirteen hours of light, charges for it with measurable rain on half the days, and asks you to book refundable because the hurricane season opens on the 1st.

Think twice before: booking non-refundable, or filling six straight days with unroofed plans when 15.5 days of the month carry measurable rain.

June moves four things in Montego Bay: the temperature of the water, the count of wet days, the length of the day, and the terms worth booking under. Where to sleep, how to get from Sangster International to your bed and whether Negril would suit your trip better hold still all year, and they live in where to stay, airport transfers and Montego Bay vs Negril.

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, averaged over 1991 to 2020 for the grid cell at 18.4762° N, 77.8939° W. That is model output for a square of coast and water, not a thermometer reading from the airport station, and the two do not always agree. Read the 86.6°F average high, the 76.1°F average low and the 5.82 inches of June rain as the shape of the month rather than the readout on your balcony.

Of those thirty days, 15.5 record at least a tenth of an inch: every other day, near enough. Only 0.3 of a day reaches a full inch, which works out to one properly soaked June in three. So the usual June day is a day with an interruption in it, not a day written off. We found no hourly breakdown we could read at source, so nothing here claims the showers arrive on an afternoon schedule.

The gap between high and low is 10.5°F, and the low sits at 76.1°F, which is to say the evening is the afternoon with the sun switched off. Dinner outdoors needs no layer at all. What the bag needs instead is a second shirt for the humidity, sun cover for a thirteen-hour day, and something waterproof for the camera and the phone (the packing list goes further).

On June 15 the sun rises at 5:33 am and sets at 6:50 pm local time, giving 13 hours 17 minutes of daylight, per sunrise-sunset.org. Jamaica keeps UTC-5 all year with no clock change, so those times hold steady across the month. The practical edge of that: Rose Hall’s last day tour, taken at 4:00 pm, finishes roughly two hours before the light goes, which leaves an unhurried run back to the coast for sunset.

Can you swim in Montego Bay in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Montego Bay averages 86.5°F in June, and the number carries a footnote worth reading. It is the mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024 from Open-Meteo’s marine model, so it runs a shade warmer than a true 24-hour average. The water at seven in the morning is a touch cooler than 86.5°F; the water at four in the afternoon is what the figure describes.

At that temperature there is no entry shock, no acclimatizing pause, no argument about who goes in first. The trade-off is that a half-hour swim does not cool you down when the air is at 86.6°F: the sea is for floating, and it will not drop your body temperature. Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard charges US$8 for visitors aged 12 and over and US$4 for children under 12, with its customer service counter open every day from 08:30 to 17:30.

We could not read a wind or swell series for the bay at source, so this page makes no claim about glassy mornings or choppy afternoons. What is dated is the storm calendar: NOAA runs the Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to November 30, peaking September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. June is inside the window and outside its worst stretch, and the consequence lands on your booking terms rather than on your swimming.

How busy is Montego Bay in June? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

We looked for an occupancy series or a monthly room-rate series for Montego Bay and found none we could read at source, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What can be dated is the calendar: June is the first month of the Atlantic hurricane season, and it is drier than the May that precedes it by 2.66 inches. Those two facts pull in opposite directions, and they belong in the same paragraph.

We found no booking-lead-time data either, so no number of weeks appears here. The dates that actually decide a June trip are opening days. Rose Hall’s Haunted Night Tour runs Wednesday to Saturday only, 18:30 to 20:30, at US$35. The Day and Garden Tour runs Monday to Saturday, 09:15 to 16:00, at US$30 per adult. Rafting the Martha Brae opens daily, public holidays included, and takes guests in order of arrival, so booking ahead buys no place in that line. A Sunday-to-Tuesday trip misses the night tour entirely.

Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax, per Tax Administration Jamaica, is charged per occupied room per night and scaled to the size of the property: US$1 at a hotel of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 at 51 to 100, and US$4 at 101 rooms and above. Complimentary rooms attract it too. Against European city taxes charged per person, that is small money. Separately, the government announced a US$20 fee on each arriving air passenger whose trip starts abroad, effective August 1, 2012. We could not reconfirm the current amount on a government page, so take it with that date attached.

One line in a June budget genuinely buys the month rather than the destination: shade and cooling that works. With lows at 76.1°F the night does none of that work for you, and with rain on 15.5 days a covered terrace turns a washed-out hour into a slow one. Everything else on the bill behaves the same in June as in February (what a Jamaica trip costs).

Things to do in Montego Bay in June

June puts the Haunted Night Tour’s 18:30 start inside the last of the daylight: sunset falls at 6:50 pm on the 15th, so the first twenty minutes of that US$35 walk happen with the light still up and the remaining hour and a half does not. The water helps too, at 86.5°F against 86.1°F in May, though June’s tenth of a degree over July is a difference no swimmer will detect.

Four places carry published detail worth planning around. Doctor’s Cave Beach: US$8 for ages 12 and over, US$4 under 12, counter open 08:30 to 17:30 daily. Rose Hall Great House: US$30 per adult for the Day and Garden Tour, Monday to Saturday, 09:15 to 16:00, each visit running 45 minutes to an hour. Rafting the Martha Brae: US$99 for visitors, J$13,000 for Jamaicans with valid local ID, three miles of river in about an hour and a quarter, open 09:00 to 16:00 with all major cards taken.

The fourth is Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle. No primary price was readable when we checked, and three travel sites quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket, so we publish none of them: bring cash and ask at the gate. June changes none of these tickets. What it changes is the air above them, which is why the unroofed hour and a quarter on the river reads differently in June than the same raft in January, and why the great house’s roof has a use beyond history.

We found no free-admission day published for any of the four, so this month gets no free list. What June does hand over without a ticket is light: 13 hours 17 minutes on the 15th, opening at 5:33 am, which is early enough for a long walk on the sand before any counter in town is staffed.

Montego Bay in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts with the 5:33 am light and a walk before breakfast, because that hour is the coolest the day will offer against an 86.6°F average high. Be at Doctor’s Cave when the counter opens at 08:30, US$8 in hand, and treat the water as the morning’s whole program. Lunch by one, then drive out to Rose Hall for the Day and Garden Tour, Monday to Saturday, arriving well before the 16:00 cutoff. That leaves the coast for a 6:50 pm sunset.

Day two belongs to the river: Rafting the Martha Brae opens at 09:00, guests are processed as they arrive, and an unshaded hour and a quarter is easier before the heat of the afternoon. If the sky closes in, swap to Rocklands at Anchovy under the trees, or hold the day and take the Haunted Night Tour instead when it falls on a Wednesday through Saturday, 18:30 to 20:30, US$35. With a shower on roughly one day in two, having a second plan is standard June practice, not pessimism.

Montego Bay in June vs May and July

Measure May June July
Average high 85.1°F 86.6°F 87.1°F
Average low 74.3°F 76.1°F 76.6°F
Precipitation 8.48 in 5.82 in 5.17 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 18.4 15.5 14.9
Sea surface (daily maxima) 86.1°F 86.5°F 86.4°F

All three columns come from the same ERA5 grid cell and the same 1991 to 2020 period, so they compare cleanly. May is the wet one: 8.48 inches against June’s 5.82, and 18.4 wet days against 15.5, with air 1.5°F cooler by day and 1.8°F cooler at night. July is the hot, dry end of the run at 87.1°F and 5.17 inches, with 14.9 wet days. The sea barely participates in any of this, spanning 0.4°F across the three months.

Shift four weeks late and you buy 0.65 inch less rain and lose nothing in the water, at the price of half a degree more heat and a deeper position in the storm season. Shift four weeks early into May and you get cooler nights and three more wet days, plus a calendar that predates June 1 altogether. For the year as a whole, the trade-offs sit in the twelve-month verdict, and May has its own page.

Is June a good time to visit Montego Bay?

Yes, if the trip is built around water and light: 86.5°F at the surface, 13 hours 17 minutes of daylight on the 15th, and rain that interrupts half the days without canceling many of them. No, if your plans are unroofed and immovable, or if your budget only works on non-refundable rates. June 1 is day one of the hurricane season, and a fixed booking in a storm window is the one June risk worth taking seriously.

If the rain count is what bothers you, July is the honest swap rather than a month in another season: 5.17 inches and 14.9 wet days, air half a degree warmer, sea within a tenth of a degree of June’s. If you want the driest part of the Jamaican year instead of the drier of two summer months, that question belongs to the country calendar, not to this four-week comparison.

Among these three months, June is the only one that pairs the warmest sea of the set with 2.66 inches less rain than the month before it.

The last word

Book June refundable, keep one indoor hour in reserve each day, and the 86.5°F water does the rest. One practical thing for the ride in: at Sangster International only two taxi companies are authorised, JUTA and JCAL, sharing a single desk just outside the Customs exit, and the airport publishes no fare table, so the rate is quoted there and nowhere else. In town, the Transport Authority’s test for a licensed vehicle is five marks, including a red PPV plate and a checked color code 10 cm high in 2.5 cm squares. We could not confirm any letter prefix on that plate (more on that).
