MONTEGO BAY · MAY · 18.5° N
You have already picked Montego Bay, so the only question left is the date. May hands over 85.1°F afternoons, a sea at 86.1°F and a calendar still clear of the Atlantic hurricane season, which NOAA dates from June 1. It also hands over 8.48 inches of rain, more than April and more than June.
Two numbers set the month against its neighbors: 18.4 days with measurable rain, against 9.9 in April, and a sea two degrees warmer than April’s 84.1°F. How the storm season fits into the rest of the year sits in our hurricane season guide, and the twelve-month view is in best time to visit Jamaica.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · MONTEGO BAY · MAY
May gives you the warmest water of the spring and a month outside the hurricane season, and charges for it in rain: 18.4 days with a measurable fall.
OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON · WETTEST OF THE THREE SPRING MONTHS · SEA AT 86.1°F
Go for: long swims in an 86.1°F sea, a month that sits outside the storm calendar, and river days that a shower does not cancel.
Think twice before: planning a week that needs dry ground: 18.4 days of the average May record at least 0.10 inch.

Montego Bay weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days
| May normal | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 85.1°F |
| Average low | 74.3°F |
| Precipitation | 8.48 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 18.4 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 1.3 |
| Sea surface | 86.1°F |
| Daylight on May 15 | 13h 03m |
Every figure here comes from ERA5 reanalysis served by Open-Meteo, 1991 to 2020 normals computed for the grid cell at 18.4762° N, 77.8939° W. That is a model estimate for a square of ocean and coast, not a thermometer reading at Sangster International, and the distinction matters: reanalysis and official station normals routinely disagree by a degree or more on the overnight minimum. On that basis May averages a high of 85.1°F, a low of 74.3°F and 8.48 inches of rain.
Spread those 8.48 inches across 18.4 days that record at least 0.10 inch and the average wet day carries under half an inch, roughly 0.46. Only 1.3 days in the month reach a full inch. In practice that is measurable rain close to three days in five, most of it in quantities you walk through, and about one real soaking to plan around.
The gap between day and night is 10.8°F, which is small enough that nothing in the bag needs to be warm. A long-sleeve layer for an air-conditioned dining room and a dry bag for the 18.4 wet days do more work than a sweater. Our packing list covers the rest, including footwear that survives a river.
Light runs 13 hours and 3 minutes on May 15, with sunrise at 5:36 am and sunset at 6:39 pm Jamaica time. Jamaica keeps one clock all year and does not shift for daylight saving, so those times hold across the month within a few minutes. Dinner at seven means eating after dark.
Can you swim in Montego Bay in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Montego Bay averages 86.1°F in May, taken from the Open-Meteo Marine record as the mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024. Read that as the warm end of the day rather than a flat 24-hour average: a reading taken before breakfast sits a shade below the headline number. Other tables that average the full day will quote you slightly less for the same month, and both are right about different hours.
At that temperature nobody stands on the sand negotiating with the first step. An 86.1°F sea means a snorkel session ends when you decide it does rather than when you start shivering, and it means small children stay in past the point where a parent gets bored. Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard charges US$8 for visitors aged 12 and over and US$4 under 12, with customer service running 08:30 to 17:30 every day of the week.
We could not verify a wind or swell series for May off this coast, so we publish no figure for either and make no claim about how flat the water lies. What we can date is the storm calendar: NOAA runs the Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to November 30, peaking on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. May falls outside it entirely.
How busy is Montego Bay in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Where May sits in the year’s cycle is easier to date than to price. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Montego Bay, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. The calendar fact stands on its own: May is the last full month before the hurricane season opens on June 1, which is the point at which the refundable-booking conversation usually starts.
Reserving weeks ahead buys less than the booking sites imply at the two places we could verify. Rafting the Martha Brae processes guests in order of arrival and says so plainly: there is no queue jump by reservation, the gate runs 09:00 to 16:00 every day including public holidays, and all major credit and debit cards are taken. Rose Hall Great House carries the real calendar constraint, since its Day and Garden Tour runs Monday to Saturday only, 09:15 to 16:00, and its night tour Wednesday to Saturday, 18:30 to 20:30.
Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per occupied room per night and scaled to the size of the property rather than to the traveler: US$1 at a hotel of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 from 51 to 100 rooms, US$4 at 101 rooms and above, per Tax Administration Jamaica. Complimentary rooms attract it too. A separate fee on arriving air passengers whose trip starts abroad was announced at US$20 with effect from 1 August 2012, and we could not confirm that amount on a current government page, so it comes with its date attached.
Rose Hall charges US$30 per adult for the Day and Garden Tour, 45 minutes to an hour of it under a roof, and that is the purchase a wet morning repays in a month with 18.4 wet days. The haunted night tour costs US$35 and fills the 18:30 to 20:30 slot, which begins after the 6:39 pm sunset. Martha Brae at US$99 per visitor is the other outing a shower cannot spoil, on the sound principle that you are already on a river.
Things to do in Montego Bay in May

May is the one spring month that puts summer water under a calendar with no storm season in it. The sea is already at 86.1°F, two degrees above April, and June 1 is still ahead. Anything that depends on being in the water rather than looking at it gets its best combination of warmth and low storm risk right here.
Three places carry published figures worth booking a day around. Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard: US$8 for ages 12 and over, US$4 under 12, service 08:30 to 17:30 daily. Rafting the Martha Brae: US$99 for visitors and J$13,000 for Jamaicans holding valid local ID, three miles of river in about an hour and a quarter, open 09:00 to 16:00 every day including public holidays. Rose Hall Great House: US$30 by day, US$35 by night, each tour 45 minutes to an hour.
The river runs its same three miles in every month of the year, and the operator notes the ride length moves with the state of the water rather than the season. What May changes is the air above it, 85.1°F against April’s 84.5, and the sea you finish in, 86.1°F against 84.1. Two degrees of water sound like nothing on paper and decide whether a 7 am swim happens at all.
We could not verify a single dated May event in Montego Bay, and we found no free-admission day at any of the sites above, so we name none. Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle, publishes no price we could read at source, and three travel sites quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket, so carry cash and ask at the gate. What costs nothing in May is the last hour of light, which holds until 6:39 pm on the 15th.
Montego Bay in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one takes the early light. The sun clears the horizon at 5:36 am, so breakfast and any walking happen before eight. Doctor’s Cave opens its service at 08:30, US$8 and US$4, and the first swim belongs in that window rather than at noon under an 85.1°F sky. Take the middle of the day indoors, then Rose Hall at 14:00 for the Day and Garden Tour, 45 minutes to an hour at US$30. Be back on the water’s edge by 6:30 pm for a 6:39 sunset.
Day two starts at the Martha Brae gate near 09:00, since guests are taken in order of arrival and the three-mile ride runs about an hour and a quarter, putting you back in town for lunch. If the sky turns, the average wet May day carries under half an inch, so the raft keeps running and the swap is to Rose Hall’s 18:30 night tour at US$35, Wednesday through Saturday. More options sit in things to do in Jamaica.
Montego Bay in May vs April and June
| April | May | June | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.5°F | 85.1°F | 86.6°F |
| Average low | 72.5°F | 74.3°F | 76.1°F |
| Precipitation | 3.53 in | 8.48 in | 5.82 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 9.9 | 18.4 | 15.5 |
| Sea surface | 84.1°F | 86.1°F | 86.5°F |
| Hurricane season | Outside | Outside | Opens June 1 |
Temperature barely argues across the three: 2.1°F separates April’s high from June’s, and the overnight low climbs a steady degree and a half per month. Rain does the arguing. April records 3.53 inches over 9.9 wet days, May 8.48 inches over 18.4, June 5.82 over 15.5. The sea climbs fastest between April and May, 84.1°F to 86.1, then adds only 0.4 more by June.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain 8.5 dry days and lose two degrees of water, which is the whole trade for anyone who swims at dawn. Shift four weeks later and you gain half a degree of sea and 2.9 fewer wet days, and you lose the clear calendar, because June 1 puts your dates inside the season NOAA runs to November 30. April buys dryness, June buys nothing that May does not already have.
Is May a good time to visit Montego Bay?
For swimmers, snorkelers and anyone whose plan is mostly horizontal in 86.1°F water, yes without hesitation, and the storm calendar stays out of the conversation until June 1. For a walking, touring, photograph-the-Great-House trip, the answer softens: 18.4 days with measurable rain is the highest count of the three spring months, and a day built around dry ground has better odds four weeks earlier.
April is the month to prefer if that describes you. It runs 3.53 inches over 9.9 wet days against May’s 8.48 over 18.4, with a high of 84.5°F, so the heat is unchanged and the sky cooperates far more often. The cost is a sea at 84.1°F and, for families, a school calendar that sits differently. April has its own page.
No other month pairs an 86°F sea with a hurricane season that has not started, and that combination is May’s alone.
The last word
Book May for the water and build the days around the rain rather than against it: an 86.1°F sea, 18.4 days that will wet something, and 13 hours of light to spend it in. One piece of arithmetic for the arrivals hall, before any of that starts. Sangster authorizes exactly two taxi companies, JUTA and JCAL, sharing a single Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside the Customs exit, and the airport publishes no fare table at all. Ask the rate at that desk, and read our airport transfers guide before you land.
