MONTEGO BAY · JANUARY · 18.48° N
January in Montego Bay runs 80.8°F by day and 71.1°F before dawn, with the sea off the bay averaging 82.0°F. Water that warm against air that cool means the swim is comfortable at eight in the morning and a towel matters by six in the evening. Daylight runs 11 hours and 11 minutes on January 15, sunrise at 06:45 and sunset at 17:56, so an afternoon plan that starts at four has two hours in it.
Flights from the US, the choice of base and the ride out of Sangster each have their own page here: routes and fares, where to sleep, the transfer. Recovery from Hurricane Melissa is tracked on its own page. The question in front of a January traveler is whether to move the trip four weeks either way, and the three-month table below answers it in tenths of a degree.

MONTEGO BAY AT A GLANCE · JANUARY
January gives 80.8°F days, 71.1°F nights and an 82.0°F sea, with measurable rain on about four days and the sun down at 17:56: a swimming month with a short afternoon.
HIGH 80.8°F · LOW 71.1°F · SEA 82.0°F · 4.2 RAIN DAYS · OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON
Go for: an 82.0°F sea, rafting the Martha Brae at US$99 between 09:00 and 16:00 daily, and a month NOAA places outside the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season.
Think twice before: building the day around the late afternoon: sunset on January 15 falls at 17:56, Rose Hall’s day tour ends at 16:00 and Doctor’s Cave keeps customer service to 17:30.

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis for the grid cell at 18.4762N, 77.8939W, averaged over 1991 to 2020. That is a model output, not a thermometer standing at Sangster International, and a station record would not match it exactly. What the model gives for January is an average high of 80.8°F, an average low of 71.1°F and 1.79 inches of rain across the month.
Rain lands on about 4.2 days in an average January, counting only days of 0.10 inch or more, roughly one day in seven. The same average holds no day at all above an inch. In practice that reads as a half-hour shower waited out under a roof, with the rest of the afternoon returning intact.
The spread between 80.8°F and 71.1°F is 9.7 degrees, and the low arrives around the 06:45 sunrise rather than in the middle of the night you spend out. Pack one long-sleeved layer for boat rides and open-air dinners and nothing heavier. A coat is dead weight in this bag (see the packing list).
Sunrise at 06:45 and sunset at 17:56 give 11 hours 11 minutes of daylight on January 15, calculated by sunrise-sunset.org and converted to Jamaica time. Most of the ticketed day ends with the light: Rose Hall’s day tour stops at 16:00, rafting on the Martha Brae closes at 16:00, and Doctor’s Cave keeps customer service to 17:30.
Can you swim in Montego Bay in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Montego Bay averages 82.0°F in January in Open-Meteo’s marine series, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024. That runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean would read, because it samples the water at its warmest hour of the day. Against a 71.1°F dawn air temperature, the water is the warmer of the two at sunrise.
At 82°F nobody needs a wetsuit and nobody stands on the steps working up to it. Children stay in until someone makes them come out, and an hour of snorkeling stays comfortable. Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard charges US$8 from age 12 and US$4 below it, with customer service seven days a week, 08:30 to 17:30.
We could not verify a January wind or swell series for the bay, so we publish no figure for either and make no claim about which stretch of shore sits calmer. The storm calendar we can date: NOAA’s National Hurricane Center runs the Atlantic season from June 1 to November 30, peaking September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. January falls outside all of it, and the season page carries the detail.
How busy is Montego Bay in January? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Montego Bay, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. The calendar facts stand without them: January sits in the northern winter, after the holiday weeks, and clear of the hurricane season. Use the queue at the raft office and the towels on the sand as your gauge of a given week, not a percentage we cannot source.
Two verified rules shape a January booking. Rafting the Martha Brae takes guests in order of arrival and sells no place in line to anyone who reserves ahead, and it opens at 09:00 and closes at 16:00 every day, public holidays included. Rose Hall’s Haunted Night Tour runs Wednesday to Saturday only. On a trip landing Saturday evening and flying home Wednesday morning, only the Saturday falls inside that window. Set the flight dates around those two shapes and the rest of the week stays flexible.
Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per occupied room per night and scaled to the size of the property, not to the head count: US$1 at a place of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 from 51 to 100, US$4 at 101 rooms and above. Complimentary rooms attract it too. At the border there is one more line: the government announced a US$20 fee on arriving air passengers with effect from August 1, 2012, and we could not reconfirm the current amount on a government page, so the date stays attached to it. More in the trip-cost guide.
Rose Hall Great House sells the one after-dark ticket we could verify near Montego Bay: US$35 for the Haunted Night Tour, Wednesday to Saturday, 18:30 to 20:30, about 45 minutes to an hour. With the sun gone at 17:56, that is the money that buys back an hour January otherwise takes off the day. The other spending decision waits at the curb: JUTA and JCAL are the two companies authorised at Sangster, sharing one Authorised Airport Taxi desk outside the Customs exit. MBJ Airports publishes no fare table, so the rate is quoted at that desk (transfer options here).
Things to do in Montego Bay in January

An average January records 1.79 inches of rain across 4.2 days of 0.10 inch or more, and no day at all above an inch. River trips, boat trips and long drives hold up under those odds. The month also sits clear of the Atlantic hurricane season, dated June 1 to November 30 by NOAA with its peak on September 10, so a January week needs none of the refundable hedging a September one does.
Doctor’s Cave Beach charges US$8 for visitors aged 12 and over and US$4 for children under 12, customer service 08:30 to 17:30. Rose Hall Great House runs its Day and Garden Tour at US$30 per adult, Monday to Saturday, 09:15 to 16:00, 45 minutes to an hour. Rafting the Martha Brae asks US$99 from visitors and J$13,000 from Jamaicans with valid local ID for roughly an hour and a quarter over three miles of river, daily 09:00 to 16:00, all major cards taken.
The river sets its own length: the operator puts the ride at about an hour and a quarter depending on the state of the water, and that does not move with the season. January moves the air around it. The sea holds 82.0°F while the dawn reading sits at 71.1°F, so the water feels warm at seven in the morning and merely pleasant at two in the afternoon. Rose Hall’s house tour keeps the same 45 minutes indoors whatever the sky does, and that makes it the slot to hold in reserve for a wet afternoon.
Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle, publishes no admission price we could read at source. Three travel sites quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket, so we print none of them: bring cash and ask at the gate. We also found no dated January event for the city and no free-admission day at any of these sites, so we name none. Sunrise at 06:45 is the one free thing we can date, two hours of light before Doctor’s Cave starts its 08:30 service.
Montego Bay in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one opens with the sun at 06:45. Doctor’s Cave begins customer service at 08:30, so arrive then, pay the US$8 (US$4 under 12) and take the 82.0°F water while the air is still near its overnight 71.1°F. Out by noon, lunch, then Rose Hall Great House inside the 09:15 to 16:00 window for the US$30 Day and Garden Tour, 45 minutes to an hour on the floor. You are back on the coast before the 17:56 sunset. Wednesday through Saturday, the US$35 night tour reopens the evening at 18:30.
Day two belongs to the Martha Brae. Be there for the 09:00 opening, since guests go out in order of arrival and reserving buys no place in line, and allow an hour and a quarter for the three miles. Afternoon: Anchovy and the streamertails at Rocklands, cash in hand. If one of the month’s 4.2 wet days lands on you, the raft still runs subject to the water, Rose Hall’s tour is indoors, and the distance between the two is short enough to rearrange at breakfast (driving notes).
Montego Bay in January vs December and February
| Measure | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 81.2°F | 80.8°F | 81.7°F |
| Average low | 72.5°F | 71.1°F | 70.8°F |
| Rainfall | 2.12 in | 1.79 in | 1.65 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.9 | 4.2 | 3.8 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 82.8°F | 82.0°F | 81.1°F |
February is the warmer and drier neighbor: 81.7°F by day against January’s 80.8°F, 1.65 inches of rain against 1.79, and 3.8 wet days against 4.2. December is wetter on both counts, 2.12 inches over 4.9 days, and it holds the warmest sea of the three at 82.8°F. Nights run the other direction: December’s 72.5°F low sits 1.4 degrees above January’s, February’s 70.8°F sits 0.3 below it. All three figures come from the same ERA5 series and the same 1991-2020 period.
Move the trip back four weeks and you gain 0.8°F on the sea, take on a third of an inch more rain and land in the holiday calendar. Move it forward four weeks and February hands you 0.9°F more daytime air while taking 0.9°F off the water, down to 81.1°F. No shift changes the basics: all three months swim, all three stay under 2.2 inches of rain, and all three fall outside the hurricane season.
Is January a good time to visit Montego Bay?
For swimmers the answer is yes without qualification: an 82.0°F sea, 1.79 inches of rain over the month, and a storm calendar that puts January outside its season entirely. For anyone whose vacation happens after dark, it is a harder sell, with the sun gone at 17:56 and the beach club’s service desk shut at 17:30. Families with an early riser in the party get the better end of the bargain.
If the short afternoon is the deal-breaker, take February: 1.65 inches over 3.8 days, daytime air a touch warmer at 81.7°F, and a sea still at 81.1°F. If the water is the whole reason for the trip, go the other way to December and its 82.8°F sea, and accept 2.12 inches of rain and the holiday weeks that come with those nights.
Of the three months, January is the one that pairs a sea above 82°F with under two inches of rain.
The last word
Book the mornings and leave the afternoons loose: at 11 hours 11 minutes, every price on this coast we could verify, US$8 at Doctor’s Cave, US$30 at Rose Hall, US$99 on the Martha Brae, sits before 16:00. One thing for the street. Jamaica’s Transport Authority identifies a licensed taxi by five marks, not one: a red PPV plate, a roof globe reading Taxi, route details on a route taxi’s front doors, a checked color code 10 cm high in 2.5 cm squares, and a driver wearing the Authority’s badge. The regulator prints no letter prefix on that plate, so do not let the plate alone decide (more here).
