Negril, with conviction. Once the transfer amortizes over six-plus nights, Negril’s advantages compound daily: Seven Mile’s walk-forever sand, the cliff-diving West End as the built-in second act, sunsets the whole town attends like a nightly premiere, and a small-hotel culture that keeps the beach human-scaled. This is the Jamaica of the postcards, and it led the island’s post-Melissa comeback with most of its rooms back by early 2026.
MoBay’s counter-argument at a week is legitimate but niche: golfers, brand-resort loyalists, and travelers who prize infrastructure over atmosphere. Everyone else drives west, as our 7-day route does before pairing it with the waterfall coast.
Montego Bay or Negril for families, couples and friend groups?
Families: a genuine draw. MoBay’s big resorts run the kids’ clubs, calm managed beaches and all-inclusive logistics families order by the pallet, while Negril’s shallow, calm Seven Mile is the better actual beach for small swimmers. Resort-first families lean MoBay; beach-first families lean Negril and pick a family-friendly property on the sand.

How to have both Montego Bay and Negril
From five nights up, the split works beautifully in one direction: land, spend the first night or two in MoBay (zero-transfer arrival, resort decompression), then move west for the Negril majority, returning direct to the airport on departure day with the 90-minute leg as a known quantity. The reverse order works, but the arithmetic of flights and sunsets favors ending in the west.
