Plan for the shoulder months. The sea is swimmable, the sun is reliable, and the crowds stay manageable. July and August work too if you want the loudest, hottest version of Crete and don't mind paying for it.

When is the best time to visit Heraklion?
The shoulder months are the sweet spot. In late spring and early fall the sun is strong enough for beach days, and the heat stays gentle enough for a comfortable walk around the ruins of Knossos. In early summer and early fall the restaurants and tours are all open for business. Of these, June and September are the best beach months. September has the warmer sea, because the water has been soaking up sun all summer.
Early October is a good second choice. The first weeks of the month can still be hot and sunny. By late October you can get cool, cloudy days, and a beach visit is no longer a safe bet. Early May works for sightseeing more than swimming: cool, overcast days are still common, and the sea may not be warm enough for a proper swim.

Winter is mild by northern standards but gray and wet, with the shortest days of the year. January is the coolest and rainiest month, and December is close behind. Stretches of clear, sunny days still break through. The sea is too cool for most people to enjoy a swim. Pack a sweater and a rain jacket.
Spring warms steadily. March is mild and mostly sunny with less rain, and April is warmer with the odd shower. Early May can still turn cool and overcast, but by the end of the month the days are consistently sunny and warm. Heraklion marks the anniversary of the Battle of Crete from 20 to 28 May.
June is the unofficial start of beach season. Rain is nearly gone, the days are long, and the sea is warm enough for swimming. In the village of Archanes, the custom of Klidonas takes place on 24 June.
July and August are dry, very sunny and the hottest months of the year. The sea reaches its warmest in August and early September, and sea breezes help keep the coast comfortable. Wine festivals are held in Dafnes in July and in Archanes in August. Forest fires are common across Greece in the dry summer months and occasionally close roads. In August, strong meltemi winds can cancel ferries and catamarans, so leave slack in any island-hopping plans.
Fall starts like summer and cools gradually. September is hot and sunny, a little cooler than August, and the summer winds have died down. October stays warm and mostly sunny, with more rain as the month goes on. November turns cooler and wetter.
When is Heraklion busiest, and when is it quiet?
July and August are the peak. The main beaches fill up, the north-coast resort towns pack out, and big sites like Knossos get crowded. Malia's party scene is in full swing, and the whole island feels loud and energetic.
The shoulder months bring plenty of visitors but rarely a crush. Some doors will be closed at the start and end of the season, especially in the smaller resort areas, and the beach spots are quiet then.
Winter is the quietest stretch by far. Beach towns shut down almost completely, most hotels and restaurants in the tourist towns close, and the coastal resorts can feel nearly empty.
When is it cheapest to go?
Hotel prices peak in July and August and fall in the shoulder months, though there is also less going on. If you want pleasant weather without paying peak hotel prices, the edges of the shoulder season, early summer and the start of fall, tend to work well. Meals, drinks and getting around cost about the same all year, so a cheaper season mainly helps with your hotel bill.
Winter brings the off-season deals, with much lower prices on accommodation and flights. You trade beach days for a lot of quiet and a lot of culture.
Is Heraklion worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you don't need a beach. Heraklion is a real city with a large local population, so it stays lively all winter while the resorts sleep. Museums and historical sights stay open, though some attractions run shorter hours. You can explore the Archaeological Museum, the old town and the archaeological sites in peace, and the island's landscape turns green. The weather is changeable, with rain and gray skies mixed with sunny stretches.
Winter also suits hikers who like the mountains and don't mind cool air. The Dikti Mountains offer hiking and some light winter sports. Ferries and flights run on very limited schedules, though at least one a day still goes to Athens. Ferries to the nearby islands run reliably from April to October, so in the rest of the low season you route through Athens.
Which month is right for you?
- Beach swimmers: June or September, with the wider window running from late May through early October.
- Party-goers: July and August.
- Sightseers will find the cooler, comfortable stretch from late March through May, plus October and the first days of November, well suited to touring. Ruins and wineries need warm, pleasant weather, not blazing heat, and spring and fall are the best seasons for vineyards and olive presses.
- Couples: the shoulder months, for long sunny days and a calm pace.
- Families: the north-coast resorts of Ammoudara, Agia Pelagia and Stalis have sandy beaches with shallow water, best enjoyed from June through September.
- Budget travelers: the shoulder months, or winter if you can skip the beach.
- People who hate crowds: April or early November, or winter if you are happy in the city.
Book July and August rooms at least three months ahead, and six months ahead for luxury hotels. September hotels can also fill up months in advance. Outside summer, check bus timetables for your dates, since buses run more often in summer. If you travel at the edges of the shoulder season, confirm that your beach town's hotels and restaurants are open before you book.
