The Koules Fortress sits at the mouth of the Venetian harbor in Heraklion, and the roads leading away from it run to a Minoan palace, a Venetian citadel, a monastery on a plateau and a lagoon with a small island in it. Crete is the largest Greek island, so a day out can mean the ruins at the edge of the city or a different town on the coast. This is a guide to the outings that start from Heraklion and the places that reward the trip.

What are the best day trips from Heraklion?
The strongest day trips from Heraklion are the Minoan palace of Knossos, the old town of Rethymno, the Arkadi Monastery, the lakeside town of Agios Nikolaos, the lagoon at Elounda with Spinalonga island, and the coastal strip around Malia and Hersonissos. Together they cover ancient ruins, Venetian streets, a monastery and the sea.
Heraklion is the capital of Crete and sits on the north coast, so every one of these outings starts from the sea side of the island. Each is developed in its own part below, and the list gives the reason to go in one line.
- Knossos, the Minoan palace just outside the city, where the story of the island’s oldest civilization begins.
- Rethymno, for a medieval old town built largely by the Venetians, with a citadel above it and a long town beach.
- Arkadi Monastery, an Orthodox monastery on a plateau southeast of Rethymno, with a Renaissance-style church.
- Agios Nikolaos, for the round lagoon of Lake Voulismeni at the center of a lively town in Mirabello Bay.
- Elounda and Spinalonga, a small harbor in a lagoon facing an island that is barely a speck on the map.
- Malia and Hersonissos, for the Minoan ruins at Malia and the beaches and nightlife of the resort towns along the coast.
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum fits naturally with the first of these. It holds the Snake Goddess, the Bull-Leaping Fresco, the Phaistos Disk and Minoan seals and jewelry, the objects that make the ruins at Knossos and Malia easier to picture.
The best day trips from Heraklion
Knossos
Knossos lies just a few kilometers from the center of Heraklion, which makes it the closest of all the outings and the one that needs the least planning around distance. It is the Minoan palace of legend, tied in the old stories to the Labyrinth and the Minotaur. What you see on site is a sprawl of courts, stairways, storerooms and reconstructed painted columns, with copies of frescoes on the walls.
The ruins make far more sense if you have seen the originals first. The frescoes, the seals and the Snake Goddess figurines are in the Archaeological Museum in town, so pairing the two on the same day lets you move from the objects to the place where they were made. Bring sun protection, since the site is largely open to the sky. Knossos suits anyone curious about the Minoans, and it works well as a first outing before heading farther afield along the coast.
Rethymno
Rethymno lies between Chania and Heraklion on the north coast, so the drive follows the sea. Its old town, the palia poli, was almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice and is one of the best-preserved old towns in Crete. Venetian fortifications, Orthodox and Catholic churches, minarets and old hammams (Ottoman bathhouses) stand side by side in the same lanes.
Above the town stands the Fortezza, a Venetian-era citadel that is open to the public and counts among the best-preserved castles on the island. Down at the water, a vast beach lined with hotels, restaurants and cafés runs along the edge of the new town, and it is where lunch of grilled fish or a plate of local cheese pies usually ends up.
A day here is mostly wandering: the harbor, the lanes of the old town, the citadel and the seafront. In the high season, direct ferries run from Rethymno to Santorini, operated by Sea Jets on high-speed catamarans, so the port sees travelers heading on to other islands as well.
Arkadi Monastery
The Arkadi Monastery stands on a plateau 14 miles southeast of Rethymno, so it is usually joined to a day in that town. Its katholikon, the main church, dates from the sixteenth century and was completed in a Renaissance Revival style that mixes Roman and Baroque elements, a façade quite unlike the plain village churches elsewhere on the island.
Beyond the architecture, Arkadi holds a place in Cretan memory as a symbol of resistance during the revolt against Ottoman rule, and the courtyard and surrounding cells carry that weight. Visitors walk the courtyard, look into the church and see the monastery grounds from the plateau.
Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos sits east of Heraklion in Mirabello Bay, on the other side of the island from Rethymno. It is a lively town all year round, and it was built around Lake Voulismeni, a small circular lagoon that is the landmark of the place. A park with a trail runs around the lake, with traditional fishing boats, ducks, pigeons, an amphitheater and many cafés.
The town sits partly on the ruins of the ancient city of Lato pros Kamara, though what you notice on the ground is the waterfront, the harbor and the lanes climbing away from the lake. A coffee beside the water and a slow loop around the lagoon make up much of the visit. Agios Nikolaos is also the base for the next trip: a local air-conditioned bus connects it with Elounda, so the two towns pair naturally in one day.
Elounda and Spinalonga
Elounda is a small harbor town in the municipality of Agios Nikolaos, set in a lagoon between Spinalonga island and Mirabello Bay. Its history begins with the ancient city of Olous, an important commercial and religious center. The town today is a waterfront of cafés and fishing boats facing the island.
Spinalonga lies in the Gulf of Elounda, next to the town of Plaka, and is tiny, with an area of just 0.033 square miles. Its Venetian-era walls and the empty streets inside them fill most of it, and later chapters of its story include its years as a leper colony, which gives the stone houses a haunting quality. You walk among the ruins, look back at the mainland and take in the bay.
The drive from Heraklion is long enough that Elounda is a day in itself.
Malia and Hersonissos
Malia is a coastal town in the northeast corner of the Heraklion region, about 21 miles east of the city. Just beyond the town lie the Minoan ruins of the Palace of Malia, a quieter counterpart to Knossos, with courts and storerooms laid out on open ground near the sea.
Hersonissos, also spelled Chersonissos, is a tourist destination known for its nightlife, its beaches and its historical sites. On its beaches there is usually no room for a towel by around 11:00, so arriving early matters. No ferries arrive at the port. Shops along the strip sell gold and silver jewelry, and also counterfeit goods such as fake watches at much lower prices than the real thing.
Together the two make a day that combines ruins in the morning with a beach and a stroll along the front, a very different feel from the old towns farther along the coast.
Day trips from Heraklion compared
| Trip | What you see | Where it lies |
|---|---|---|
| Knossos | Minoan palace, reconstructed columns, frescoes | Just a few kilometers from the center of Heraklion |
| Rethymno | Venetian old town, Fortezza, long beach | On the north coast, between Chania and Heraklion |
| Arkadi Monastery | Renaissance Revival church, monastery courtyard | On a plateau 14 miles southeast of Rethymno |
| Agios Nikolaos | Lake Voulismeni, harbor, cafés | East of Heraklion, in Mirabello Bay |
| Elounda and Spinalonga | Lagoon harbor, island fortress | Near Agios Nikolaos, in the Gulf of Elounda |
| Malia and Hersonissos | Palace of Malia, beaches, nightlife | About 21 miles east of Heraklion (Malia), also east on the north coast (Hersonissos) |
The choice comes down to what you want the day to feel like. For ruins, Knossos is the nearest and Malia the one by the sea. For old streets and a citadel, Rethymno is the clear pick, and the Arkadi Monastery can be added to it.
If you have only one day free, Knossos with the Archaeological Museum gives the deepest sense of Crete’s ancient story, while Rethymno gives the best look at the island’s Venetian past. Anyone whose days are meant for the beach will find that Hersonissos and the coast around Malia fit that mood best.
Because the trips head in different directions, combining Rethymno with Agios Nikolaos in one day makes little sense. Pick a direction and give it the day.
Tour or on your own?
The answer depends on how many stops the day contains and how far apart they are. A trip with one place, such as Knossos, asks very little of the traveler, while a day that links Rethymno, its citadel and a monastery on a plateau asks for more movement, and Elounda with a boat to Spinalonga adds another leg on the water.
A guided outing makes sense where the history is layered and a guide can put names to what you see, as at the palace and the monastery. It also removes the question of how to link the stops, which matters on the longer days. Going independently gives control over the pace, so you can linger in the lanes of Rethymno or at the lakeside in Agios Nikolaos without a schedule.
Public transport is part of the picture too. Heraklion has urban buses on 39 different routes, and a local air-conditioned bus links Elounda with Agios Nikolaos, which helps once you are on the east side of the island. Heraklion Airport lies about 3 miles east of the center and operates around the clock, a detail that matters if a day trip begins or ends around a flight.
Before settling on a plan, ask what the day includes. Is the boat to Spinalonga part of it, or does it need arranging separately? Does the outing include time inside the Fortezza or only a pass through the old town? Is a site’s entry part of the deal? These questions apply whichever way you travel, and they are the ones that separate a tidy day from a rushed one.
Good to know before you go
Crete is a large island, so the east and west sides are different journeys, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is a good companion to any of the ancient sites. The museum is open daily through the end of October, with shorter hours from November.
In Hersonissos, the shops on the strip sell counterfeit goods alongside real jewelry, and children sell roses along the street at night, so look closely at what you buy. Elsewhere, the old towns and the harbors reward a slow pace.
