Corfu in June: Weather, Swimming, Old Town Days and a Two-Day Plan

In June, the Old Town of Corfu spends its evenings outdoors. Chairs spill across the arcades beside the Spianada, the long green esplanade where cricket is still played, and the smell of grilled fish drifts down the narrow lanes.

The island is green, the sea has finally warmed, and the days stretch late. June is the month when Corfu opens its beaches, its tavernas and its fortresses to summer visitors, and it suits anyone who wants swimming and sightseeing in the same day.

What is the weather like in Corfu in June?

June in Corfu is warm, sunny and mostly dry, with only a few days of rain and a sea that has crossed over from chilly to pleasant.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
May 73.9 59.0 2.00 7.1 14 h 20 min 68.1
June 81.5 65.7 0.98 3.9 14 h 57 min 76.7
July 85.8 69.6 0.58 2.4 14 h 42 min 80.9

At Aktion, on the mainland coast south-east of Corfu, highs average in the low 80s, which is hot enough to make a hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle part of every outing. Lows stay in the mid-60s, so late dinners outdoors are comfortable in a light shirt, and a thin layer is only for the ferry deck or a breezy terrace.

Rain is a small part of the month. A handful of days bring a shower, and the whole month adds up to about an inch, so a light rain jacket in the bag is plenty. A wet day is the one to give to museums, a long lunch or a covered arcade in the Old Town.

Daylight is the real luxury of June. The sun stays up nearly fifteen hours, which leaves room for a beach stop, a fortress walk and a dinner without watching the clock. The sea sits in the mid-70s, a big step up from May.

Can you swim in Corfu in June?

Yes, the sea in June is warm enough for a proper swim, with the water in the mid-70s and well past the shock of spring.

The island has resorts and beaches on its north, east and southwest coasts, so there is a stretch of shore within reach wherever you stay. In the south, Kavos has tourist facilities. Palaiokastritsa lies along the EO24 westbound from Corfu Town, and it is a natural place to build a beach day around.

Boat trips are another way into the water. Ferries link Corfu with Gaios on Paxoi, so a swim stop on a neighboring island is within reach. The northeast coast, lined with large villas, faces the straits toward Albania.

What to do in Corfu in June

June is a month for doing a little of everything in Corfu: mornings among stone lanes and fortress walls, afternoons in the water, evenings at a table. The long daylight makes that rhythm easy to keep.

The island’s own food is part of the pleasure, with dishes like pastitsada (pasta with slow-cooked meat in a spiced tomato sauce), sofrito (veal in a garlicky white-wine sauce) and bourdeto (fish in a peppery red sauce) on local menus. Kumquat liqueur and tsitsibira, the local ginger beer, are the drinks to look for.

Summer on the island also means music and open-air events. The Athens Epidaurus Festival runs from May to October in Athens and Epidaurus, though its Epidaurus performances belong to July and August, not June. In Corfu itself, brass bands from the town’s philharmonic societies are a part of the island’s character, and you may come across one playing on a square or in a procession.

The Old Town and its fortresses

Corfu Town is built around the Spianada and a maze of tall, pastel-colored lanes where laundry hangs between shuttered windows. The arcade known as the Liston, with its cafés, faces the esplanade. Two fortresses, the Old Fortress and the New Fortress, frame the town and give it a layered, defensive look.

The Archaeological Museum of Corfu holds a relief of Dionysus Bacchus, and it is the obvious refuge if clouds roll in. Away from the main squares, the back lanes are full of small bakeries, shops selling kumquat sweets and tavernas with tables set on the stones.

With hot afternoons, June rewards slow walking and long pauses in shade. Stop at a café for a frappé, the iced coffee of the Greek summer, and let the town come to you.

Achilleion and the south

The EO25 runs southbound from the city toward Achilleion, the summer palace built by Elisabeth of Bavaria, known as Sissi, Empress of Austria. After her death Wilhelm II of Germany bought it. The palace and its terraced gardens, full of statues, give a feel for how European royalty spent summers on the island.

Further south, Kavos is the island’s resort strip with its tourist facilities, a very different mood from the villages of the interior. If you want village life, look for small tavernas where the menu is whatever the kitchen cooked that morning.

Palaiokastritsa and the west

The EO24 heads westbound from the city to Palaiokastritsa, where the coast breaks into bays and headlands backed by green hills. June is a good month to come with swimsuits in the bag, since the water has warmed and the rain has largely gone.

Corfu’s myths are tied to this coast. Jason and Medea are said to have married in Medea’s Cave, a story told by Apollonius of Rhodes in the Argonautica. Whether or not you track down the cave, the legend adds a layer to a day spent among the coves and olive groves.

Ferries also leave Corfu for Igoumenitsa and Sarandë, where the traditional ferries and the high-speed Flying Dolphins both run, and for Patras. Those routes matter if you are adding the mainland to your trip.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born on Corfu, a small piece of history that locals are happy to share. Wherever you wander, take time at a taverna table under the vines, and finish with a glass of kumquat liqueur.

A two-day itinerary for Corfu in June

Day 1 belongs to the Old Town. Start with coffee near the Spianada, then walk the lanes toward the Old Fortress and the New Fortress, saving the hot middle of the day for the Archaeological Museum, where the relief of Dionysus Bacchus waits in the cool of the galleries.

For lunch, pick a taverna in the back lanes and order a local dish such as sofrito or pastitsada. In the afternoon, stroll the Liston arcade and the esplanade, perhaps watching a cricket match if one is on. With daylight lasting nearly fifteen hours, supper can be a long, unhurried affair at a table outdoors.

Day 2 heads out of town. Take the EO25 southbound toward Achilleion and spend the first hours in its gardens and halls, then return to the coast for a swim, since the sea is in the mid-70s. If you prefer the west, the EO24 leads to Palaiokastritsa, with its bays and the legend of Medea’s Cave. Rain card: on a showery day, keep to the museum, the covered arcades and a long lunch, then walk the fortresses when the sky lifts.

Is Corfu busy in June?

Yes, June falls inside the peak tourist season in Greece, which runs from May through September, when about three quarters of all tourists arrive.

On Corfu, that shows up in the resort coasts. Package holiday resorts exist on the north, east and southwest coasts, and the northeast has been developed largely by a few British holiday companies, with large villas. Kavos, in the south, provides tourist facilities, so the beach strips there are among the places that feel the season most.

The ferry links to Igoumenitsa, Sarandë, Paxoi and Patras add a steady flow of travelers passing through the port. Away from the resorts, the inland villages and the narrow lanes of the Old Town keep a slower pace. Moving between those two worlds is easy enough with the two national roads that radiate from the city. Compared with the very height of summer, June has the longest daylight and a sea that is already warm, so the pace feels lively without the full weight of the high season.

What to pack for Corfu in June

June in Corfu calls for summer clothes built around sun, sea and stone streets.

  • Sunscreen and a hat, because highs reach the low 80s and the days are long.
  • Swimsuit and a beach towel, since the sea is warm enough for real swims.
  • Sandals or sturdy shoes for the Old Town lanes and the fortresses.
  • A light rain jacket for the few days of showers.
  • A refillable water bottle for hot afternoons of sightseeing.
  • A thin layer for evenings on the water.

Good to know before you go

June sits in the peak tourist season, so the resort coasts and the Old Town are busy with visitors. The Epidaurus part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival is held only on Fridays and Saturdays in July and August, so it is not on the calendar for a June trip.

The two national roads out of Corfu Town, the EO24 westbound to Palaiokastritsa and the EO25 southbound toward Achilleion, are the main routes to the west and south. Ferries to Igoumenitsa, Sarandë, Paxoi and Patras leave from the island, which matters if you add the mainland or a neighboring island.

Corfu in June vs May and July

Going four weeks earlier, in May, means a cooler sea in the high 60s and noticeably more rain, with about seven wet days. The days are shorter, and swimming is more of a quick dip than a long float. Beaches are still within reach, but sightseeing takes the lead, and the island is green from the spring rains.

Going four weeks later, in July, brings the warmest sea of the three, in the low 80s, and the least rain. Highs climb into the mid-80s, so midday is hot, and the beach becomes the center of the day. The peak season is in full swing, and the resort coasts are at their liveliest.

If you want swimming without the heaviest heat, June fits well. Choose May for sightseeing and cooler walking, and July if the sea is the point of the trip.

Is June a good time to visit Corfu?

Yes, June is a very good time for travelers who want warm water, long days and an island that is fully open for the season.

Swimmers, beach lovers and people who like to spend evenings at outdoor tables will enjoy it most. Those who prefer cool air for climbing fortress walls, or who want to avoid the peak tourist season altogether, may be happier in another month.

On arrival, a first stroll through the Old Town and along the Spianada is a good way to settle in, ideally ending with a table and a plate of pastitsada. After that, the coasts open up, from Palaiokastritsa to the south. What is special about June here is the mix: a sea that has just warmed, nearly fifteen hours of daylight, and an island where a cricket match, a brass band and a plate of bourdeto can all fill the same evening.
