Corfu in July: Weather, Sea Temperature, Old Town and Local Food

In July, the arcades of the Liston in Corfu Town fill with the clink of glasses of tsitsibeera, the island’s ginger beer, while the clink of glasses of tsitsibeera, while cricket bats echo across the Spianada, the big green square beside the Old Town. Plates of pastitsada and sofrito land on tavernas tables, and the Ionian Sea is warm enough to be the point of the day. This is Corfu in high summer: long light, easy lingering over dinner and a sea made for swimming.

What is the weather like in Corfu in July?

July in Corfu is hot, bright and mostly dry, with the sea at its warmest of the early summer. At Aktion, on the mainland coast south-east of Corfu, highs average 85.8°F, and the rain that does fall comes on very few days.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
June 81.5 65.7 0.98 3.9 14 h 57 min 76.7
July 85.8 69.6 0.58 2.4 14 h 42 min 80.9
August 87.6 71.1 0.81 3.1 13 h 43 min 81.7

Nights stay warm, with lows in the upper 60s, so dinner is eaten outdoors in a short-sleeved shirt and the windows of your room are likely to stay open. Sun protection matters more than rain gear in July: a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen belong in your bag every day, and a light rain jacket is only a precaution for the rare wet day.

The light is long. Daylight stretches well into the evening, which gives you room for a late walk along the waterfront of Corfu Town or a slow dinner before dark falls. The days are already a little shorter than in mid-June, a change you notice mostly in how early the dusk arrives by the end of the month.

Can you swim in Corfu in July?

Yes, the sea is warm enough for a long, unhurried swim, with water temperatures in the low 80s that make getting in a pleasure rather than a shock. It is a few degrees warmer than in June and a shade cooler than in August.

Swimming here is mostly a matter of choosing your stretch of coast and pairing it with the rest of your day, a morning dip before the old streets, or a plunge after a hike.

If you want your water with slides, Aqualand in Central Corfu is one of the biggest water parks in the world, with 51 slides, pools and other games.

What to do in Corfu in July

July in Corfu is for slow mornings in the old streets, long lunches and evenings spent outside. Summer is also the season when the covered lanes of the Old Town keep you dry, from the squares of town to the villages in the hills.

The table is half the reason to come. Corfu’s cooking carries a Venetian accent, and three dishes are worth seeking out. Pastitsada is a slow-cooked stew of beef, rooster or rabbit in a rich, spiced tomato sauce, served over bucatini.

Sofrito is thinly sliced beef in a garlicky white wine and vinegar sauce, served with mashed potatoes or rice. Bourdeto is a fiery fish stew of scorpionfish or other white fish in tomato, red pepper and garlic.

To drink, order tsitsibeera, the local ginger beer, which you can have at the Liston or at better restaurants and coffee houses.

Corfu Old Town and the Liston

The center of life in Corfu Town is the Liston, a row of arcaded cafés facing the Spianada. You sit under the arches with a coffee or a glass of tsitsibeera and watch the town go by, and the square beside you is where cricket, left behind by the British, is still played. Behind the arcades the Old Town unfolds in a maze of narrow lanes and small squares.

Blue buses serve Corfu Town and its surroundings, leaving from the terminal in San Rocco Square. Tickets are single-journey and must be validated on board, and they can be bought from machines. Green buses cover the rest of the island, which helps when you want to leave town for a beach or a village.

The Old Fortress and the Achilleion

The Old Fortress is a Venetian fortress standing in the city of Corfu itself, a mass of stone beside the Old Town that gives you a different view of the town and the sea around it. It sits within the same walk as the Spianada, which makes it a natural companion to a stroll along the waterfront.

The Achilleion, a palace outside town, looks out over a panoramic view: the city of Corfu to the north, the southern part of the island, and the Ionian Sea framing it all to the east.

Aqualand, the Corfu Trail and the north

Away from town, Aqualand in Central Corfu gives a full day of water to anyone traveling with children or anyone who simply wants slides in the July heat. It is one of the biggest water parks in the world, with 51 slides, pools and other games.

For walkers, the Corfu Trail is a long-distance footpath that runs the full length of the island. The route is well signed and a book accompanies it, so you can walk a stretch of it rather than the whole thing, then finish at a village taverna. In the north, Arillas has the Corfu Microbrewery, a good stop for a cold beer after a day on the trail.

A two-day itinerary for Corfu in July

Day 1 belongs to Corfu Town. Start with coffee at the Liston and a walk through the Old Town lanes, then cross toward the Old Fortress. Take lunch in a taverna in the old streets, and order pastitsada or sofrito, both slow-cooked dishes suited to a long, unhurried table.

In the afternoon, stay in the shade of the Old Town’s narrow lanes or sit under the arcades of the Liston with a tsitsibeera. As evening comes and the day cools, stroll the Spianada, where you may catch cricket on the grass, and finish with bourdeto at a table outdoors. If the weather turns, which July seldom does, the cafés under the arcades and the covered lanes of the Old Town keep you dry.

Day 2 takes you out of town. Ride toward the Achilleion for its panorama of the city, the south of the island and the Ionian Sea, then spend the middle of the day in the water, either at a beach of your choice or at Aqualand in Central Corfu if you have children with you.

Spend the late afternoon on a stretch of the Corfu Trail, a signed footpath that crosses the island, or head north to Arillas for a beer at the Corfu Microbrewery. Dinner is at a village taverna, with whatever fish stew or stew of the day the kitchen has made.

Is Corfu busy in July?

Yes, July sits inside the peak tourist season in Greece, which runs from May through September and brings roughly three quarters of all visitors to the country. Corfu feels that rhythm, with the Old Town streets and the Liston lively from morning into the night.

Corfu is reached by direct ferry from Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi in Italy, from Himara and Saranda in Albania, and from Igoumenitsa and Patras on the Greek mainland, which gives the island a steady stream of arrivals by sea. At the airport, be ready for very long lines in the departures area in summer, because the terminal dates from the 1970s.

The result is an island that is in full swing: tavernas busy at dinner, buses and roads in use, and the sea full of swimmers. It is a lively, sociable month rather than a still one, and the long daylight spreads the activity across the day, so you can still find room for a swim or a stroll.

What to pack for Corfu in July

Pack for heat, sun and water, with a few things for walking and evenings out.

  • A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, because the sun is strong through the long daylight.
  • Sunscreen, for beach days and for the open terraces of the Achilleion.
  • Swimsuit and a quick-dry towel, since the sea is warm and swimming is the point of the month.
  • Sturdy sandals or shoes for the cobbles of the Old Town and the paths of the Corfu Trail.
  • A light layer for evenings, as nights stay warm but not hot.
  • A light rain jacket in case one of the rare wet days arrives.

Good to know before you go

July heat is the main thing to plan around, with highs in the mid-80s and strong sun, so build in time in the water and in shaded arcades. Blue bus tickets in Corfu Town are single-journey and must be validated on board, and tickets from the driver cost €0.50 more than from the machines. For emergencies in Greece, the police number is 100 and the EU-wide number is 112.

Corfu in July vs June and August

Move the trip four weeks earlier and the sea is a few degrees cooler, the days are a little longer, and a few more days bring rain. June is still inside the peak season, so the island is busy, but the warmth of the water is the trade, and swimmers who like a bracing start may prefer it.

Move it four weeks later and August is the hottest of the three, with the warmest sea and daylight that is already noticeably shorter. The season still runs through September, so Corfu stays lively, and the heat is the main difference.

July sits between the two: a warm sea, few rainy days and long evenings. Choose June if you want a little more daylight and cooler water, and August if you want the warmest sea and hottest days. Choose July if you want a balance of both.

Is July a good time to visit Corfu?

Yes, if you want sea, sun and long evenings, July is a good time to visit Corfu. It suits swimmers, families who will spend a day at Aqualand, walkers on the Corfu Trail and anyone happy to eat late at a table outdoors.

It is less suited to travelers who dislike heat or a lively island, since highs sit in the mid-80s and July falls in the peak season. Those people may prefer a different month.

On arrival, go first to the Liston in Corfu Town, order a tsitsibeera and take in the Old Town. What is special about July here is the warm Ionian Sea, the Liston filled with people and a plate of pastitsada eaten outside after a day of swimming.
